Walking Tour of Spain's Central Plateau ~ Ciudad Real (Region)
The beautiful monastery is located in the city center. The visit begins by passing through an underground passage, which was used during the monastery era for food storage and later served as a refuge during the Civil War. It was subsequently converted into a cultural hall. The site features both classical and contemporary art, with permanent exhibitions showcasing works by 20th-century artists such as Dalí and Miró. Not to be missed are the old gallery and cloisters of the ancient Mercedarian Monastery, as well as the sacred works on the lower level. Additionally, the monastery is associated with numerous ghost stories and other mysterious phenomena.

Ciudad Real Cathedral
#SeptemberDestinations2025
The unique feature of Ciudad Real Cathedral is that it's not a single architectural style. Its construction took centuries, revealing a fusion of diverse artistic styles. The interior is particularly striking for its exquisite Baroque altarpiece and choir stalls.
Ciudad Real, home to the cathedral, is also an ideal starting point for exploring the charm of La Mancha. You can sample the region's renowned game, cheese, and wine, and explore the surrounding area made famous in Cervantes's novel "Don Quixote."

Cool off in Ciudad Real's swimming pools during the summer
A Wild Walk in Spain's Central Plateau ~ Ciudad Real (Region)
It's incredible that there aren't more places like this in such a dry region of Spain. It's definitely worth a visit, especially with children, to cool off in the summer heat. It's small, but I think it's enough for a wonderful day out. There's no age limit for the various slides, and wait times are minimal. There's also a large artificial beach wave pool, and by the way, you can bring food and drinks in without any problems.

Exploring the World of Gothic Fantasy Architecture
A Journey Through Spain's Central Plateau ~ Ciudad Real (Region)
This is a must-visit attraction when passing through Ciudad Real—a transitional Gothic-style building whose origins can be traced back to a Romanesque temple. It has undergone multiple restorations, with the most recent one shaping its current appearance.
The first renovation took place during the reign of Alfonso X "The Wise." The southern gate and the main altar painting are in Renaissance style. The Perdón Gate features Gothic design with Romanesque elements and is believed to have been the church's entrance during Alfonso X's era. Notable items in the sacristy include several paintings, wooden panels by Becerril, and an exquisite Baroque-style cabinet. The new tower was completed in the 19th century, consisting of four stone-built sections.

Romantic Urban Adventure Under the Royal Gate
Exploring the Central Plateau of Spain ~ Ciudad Real (Region)
This gate is the only remaining relic of the Royal Castle in Ciudad Real. It is remarkably well-preserved, with a history dating back to the 14th century. The gate features six arches (two pointed arches on the exterior and four horseshoe arches on the interior). It is flanked by two square towers on either side of the arches, and the walls still bear the emblem of Castile. If you visit Ciudad Real, this site is definitely worth a stop.

In-depth exploration of the Don Quijote Museum
Spanish Central Plateau Adventure ~ Ciudad Real
The universal Don Quixote Museum combines art and multimedia exhibitions to pay tribute to the immortal character created by Miguel de Cervantes.
The center's various exhibitions are dedicated to Cervantes's famous novel, Don Quixote. Here, you can see a montage of conversations between the novel's ten characters. There are also approximately ten paintings on Cervantes-related themes by José Jiménez Aranda, one of the finest 19th-century illustrators of Don Quixote. One room recreates the atmosphere of a Madrid printing press in the early 17th century—the time when the first printed edition of the book was produced—while another section features a short multimedia montage about the novel. The museum library also houses an extensive collection of 4,000 books related to Cervantes.

Spanish Central Plateau Adventure ~ Ciudad Real (Region)
Located in Campo Calatrava, Ciudad Real boasts a hilly terrain and boasts a modern layout while retaining all the charm of La Mancha.
The arrival of the Madrid-Seville high-speed train has made transportation even more convenient. The city offers a unique cuisine centered around game, cheese, and wine. Furthermore, the Cabañeros and Las Tablas de Daimiel Natural Parks showcase its rich ecosystem.
In the Middle Ages, four kilometers of city walls and 130 towers protected a population comprised of Christians, Moors, and Jews. After the unification of the Peninsular Kingdom under the Catholic Monarchs, Ciudad Real became the capital of La Mancha Province in the 17th century. This development benefited its economy, leading to investment in important architecture.
From Ciudad Real, there are many ways to discover the province immortalized in Cervantes's "Don Quixote de la Mancha." Almagro, located in Campo Calatrava County, is renowned for its open-air theater (a national monument) and its International Classical Theater Festival. In addition to other interesting buildings, the National Theatre Museum and the Parador de Turismo are also worth visiting.
