Back from Changsha, I really don't recommend going in September-October because the fun just doesn't stop!
Babies! Who understands! Just got back from Changsha, and now my mind is full of the smell of stinky tofu, the orchid latte from Chayan Yuese, and the fireworks at Orange Isle (on weekends), it was just too much fun! I originally thought Changsha would still be stuffy and hot in September-October, but after going, I found that the autumn breeze in Changsha at this time is just perfect. Every day was all about eating and strolling, and the happiness just wouldn't stop!
🍢【Must-try Food List】
Stinky Tofu: Changsha’s stinky tofu is the soul! The "black classic" stinky tofu is crispy on the outside and tender inside, juicy when bitten, smells stinky but tastes delicious, brushed with secret spicy sauce, super flavorful. Be sure to add pickled long beans and diced radish for a richer taste, even if you have to queue, it’s worth buying!
Chayan Yuese: You must drink Chayan Yuese in Changsha! The orchid latte has a super thick cream top sprinkled with pecan pieces, one sip is sweet but not greasy; the oolong tea is very fragrant, with a great balance of tea and milk flavors. I recommend ordering two cups at once because it’s really that good, and many stores have mini-program ordering, so you don’t have to wait in line too long.
Spicy Crayfish: The spicy crayfish in September-October is still very fresh! The spicy crayfish at "Wenheyou" is super spicy and flavorful, the shrimp meat is bouncy, sipping the broth makes you sweat from the heat but you want to keep eating. You can pair it with plain noodles, mixed with the broth, it’s amazing. If you can’t eat spicy, you can also order garlic flavor, which is equally delicious.
📍【Recommended Spots】
Orange Isle: You must go to Orange Isle when in Changsha! Walking along the Xiang River, you can see the young Chairman Mao sculpture, which is spectacular. In September-October, the willow leaves on Orange Isle turn yellow, but the lawns are still lush green, perfect for photos. There are fireworks on weekend nights (check official announcements for exact times), sitting by the Xiang River watching fireworks is super romantic.
Taiping Street: Taiping Street is an old street in Changsha, full of local life! You can browse handmade shops, cultural and creative stores, and eat lots of snacks like sugar oil rice cakes and shaved jelly. Taiping Street is livelier at night, with red lanterns lit up, creating a great atmosphere.
Yuelu Mountain: For those who like hiking, you can go to Yuelu Mountain! You can take the cable car up and overlook the cityscape of Changsha. In September-October, the maple leaves start turning red, very beautiful. You can take the slide down, which is exciting and fun. Remember to book cable car and slide tickets online in advance to avoid queues.
🚌【Transportation Tips】
Changsha Metro lines 1, 2, and 4 reach most attractions. It’s recommended to get a "Changsha Metro Card" for discounts on buses and metro. If you want to visit Taiping Street and Pozi Street, walking or riding shared bikes is more convenient so you can stop anytime to eat snacks. Also, Orange Isle is very large, so it’s better to take the sightseeing bus; otherwise, walking will be tiring. The sightseeing bus has a pass that lets you get on and off at various spots.
🏨【Accommodation Suggestions】
Staying near Wuyi Square or Huangxing Square is super convenient, with shopping areas and attractions right outside, so you can go back to the hotel right after evening strolls. The guesthouse I stayed at near Wuyi Square is very close to the metro station, just a 3-minute walk to Chayan Yuese, and there’s a snack street downstairs, so if you get hungry late at night, you can just go downstairs to buy food, very thoughtful.
Changsha is a city you "don’t want to leave once you come." In September-October, Changsha not only has lots of delicious food but also comfortable weather, making every day super happy. If you also like spicy food and lively atmospheres, you must come to Changsha. I believe you will fall in love with its vibrant local life!
