Next to Piazza Cittadella in città alta, there is another small cable car station (Funicolare San Vigilio) that takes you to the higher San Vigilio. Alternatively, you can follow the signs and climb the 162 steps of Scaletta Scorlazzone to reach the destination. There are few tourists here and it is very quiet ~ the scenery is beautiful! It’s a great place to take landscape photos. There is a Castello S. Vigilio here, which is open to visitors. #getgoing2025 I didn’t expect much when I booked a layover in Bergamo, but this charming northern Italian city completely exceeded my expectations. With just a few hours to explore before my next flight, I headed straight from the airport to the Città Alta, the old town perched atop a hill. A 15-minute bus ride brought me to the base of the funicular, and as the little cable car climbed up, stunning views of the city below began to unfold. The Città Alta is a medieval dream—cobblestone streets, historic architecture, and breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. My first stop was the Piazza Vecchia, the heart of the old town. Surrounded by elegant Renaissance buildings, this square felt like stepping back in time. I grabbed a quick espresso at a local café and soaked in the tranquil atmosphere, a contrast to the bustling airport I’d left behind. From there, I wandered to the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, which instantly impressed me with its intricate frescoes and richly decorated interior. Nearby, the Colleoni Chapel is a must-see, with its stunning marble facade and delicate details. Even with a tight schedule, the beauty of these historic gems left a lasting impression.
