2024 Baotou Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in November)
In Mongolian, "baotou" means “a place with deer”, so in Chinese it is called Lucheng or ‘Deer City.’ In Baotou, you can go to the grasslands and stay in a yurt, drink a bowl of hot milk tea, eat an authentic boiled lamb, then hear a faraway Mongolian song to experience the heroic character of the Mongolian people. You can travel on to the Northern Weaponry City, climb up on a tank, play with a cannon, transform into a soldier and live out a scene fighting the battlefield. In addition, the vast and imposing ruins of the Wudang Zhao section of the Great Wall from the Zhao Kingdom of the Warring States era, older than the Badaling Great Wall by a thousand years, is also worth a visit.

Shangri-La Hotel in Baotou✨
What is your best hotel so far? In my case, I have a few in mind but Shangri-La is definitely one of them. The price might be higher compared to any other hotels but the service is a topnotch. As we all know Shangri-La has many branches in the world. And this one is located in Baotou City, Inner Mongolia. The hotel building is huge. It has a restaurant, swimming pool, kid's playing area and parking.
Our room was on the 16th floor which was awesome. The view was fantastic. We booked the King Bedroom and it is spacious. Of course, it has a bathtub. The guests can also have breakfast. We stayed there for 2 nights with no regrets. Great!

Xila Muren Grasslands 🇨🇳 Inner Mongolia
A tour group stop off.
A trip to the grasslands in Inner Mongolia in my mind was going to be a chance to see horses roaming, yurts on the lands and try some tasty new foods.
And in its own way it was that. Did we stay in yurts? Yes. Did we see horses in the Grasslands? Yes. Did we have a banquet of traditional foods? Yes
A trip that ticks boxes of what you'd hoped is a start, but this is a tourist centre and unfortunately the authenticity was missing, the rows of yurts across the area, horse riding tours and a dinner with live entertainment, all slightly different to the brochure.
But with a group of friends it was great! A chance to dress up, make a fool of yourselves in the entertainment shows and try local dishes. Walking through the grasslands was cool and we saw camels cows and horses roaming. The yurts are ok for a night and it's something to tell your friends and family about.
Getting There- For the grasslands it's likely that you'll need a tour provider, coach or rental car.
Food- The food consisted mainly of lamb dishes; including ribs, skewers, stews and kebabs. The flat breads were remiscent of middle eastern food and the flavour was generally a lightly salted and mild spices. In the grasslands they also has a number of dairy snacks that tasted something like mashup of toffee and cheddar cheese. Sweet, salty and something I'm still not sure if I like or not, but worth trying.
Thankful for the opportunity to travel and live in China for a year, getting to teach these precious little ones English and exchange culture with them too. They LOVE learning about Halloween and all of the American holidays, plus I love learning about all of theirs! :]
The five famous Tibetan Buddhist temples near Baotou, Inner Mongolia, are named "The Four Famous Temples of Tibetan Buddhism in China" with the Potala Palace in Tibet, the Ta'er Monastery in Qinghai, and the Labrang Monastery in Gansu.
Five calls for 60 yuan, Mongolian, Tibetan and other ethnic minorities can offer. There are two choices from the gate of the park to the five-day call. One is the battery car, and the other is to go by yourself. I did not hesitate to choose the latter.
Actually, the road to the five-day call is very good, flat and not far. But there was a hill next to it, and the view to the top of the mountain was very good, so I went up the mountain. The hills are undulating all the way, and people are going up and down the road. Every hilltop has Mani piles and prayer flags, and the sun is colorful.
Over the top of the mountain, I finally saw the five-day call. This temple group is not large, and it is small and restrained compared to the temples in Tibet and Qinghai. Quietly standing in an unknown valley. In the autumn, the temples in the sun exude a charming light.
Five is the largest and largest temple called Su Guzhen. It is allowed to visit in the temple, but it is not allowed to take pictures. There is a house next to the Sugu Temple, called Rongken, which is a place for tea and lunch for the monks. There are four large pots built in. It is said that the largest pot can cook 1,500 pounds of beef.
Five when there are a total of nine halls. But most of them are only open to the public when they have statutes. Each stand has not only a map but also a code. If you can't get in, you can watch the inside through the computer 3D landscape.
Suddenly ran over a kitten, not afraid of people at all, but also went to the arms of people. At first glance, the monks in the temple are very good at it.
Now I think the color of Tibetan architecture is very high. It is not the kind of red and green that is advertised, but the combination of dark brown, brick red and white. Occasionally, bright yellow, very beating. Especially on sunny days, people feel comfortable.
When I arrived at the five-day call, I felt that I would return to Tibet in a moment, and the sun was as strong and pure as Tibet.
Hulunbeier has a vast territory and various scenic spots are scattered far away. Therefore, the common ways of traveling in Hulunbuir are these
car rental
Hulunbeier terrain, navigation in the grassland and forest hinterland are blind areas, mobile phone signal is weak Or no, problems or rescues are difficult to solve, and some beautiful scenery are in the grasslands or in the no-man's land in the depths of Senli. The unfamiliar route can't be found. If you really like the friends who drive by yourself, it is recommended to find a local guide. Its so reliable in self-driving.
Travel charter
is basically organized by individuals. There is no qualification and no guarantee contract. Hulunbeier has many locals and foreigners in this industry, and its professionalism and quality are different. If you encounter the experienced caravan master, the route is familiar, the requirements of the guests can be satisfied, and the photography points are familiar, then you are earned. If you encounter a big flicker, but also a little bit of snakes, and the route, scenery, and itinerary do not understand, then your travel is basically scrapped, so be sure to understand in depth to make decisions.
Travel agency group
is the travel agency bus, the guide guides where to go, the basic scenic spot is the main road, the scenery does not stop on the road, the bus in the depths of the grassland can not enter, the schedule is tight, Dont eat a group meal. If your registration fee is lower, congratulations and you have another point of attractions shopping store.
Outdoor group
is organized by outdoor clubs. The itinerary is deeper and more leisurely. However, in recent years, many outdoor clubs in the field have a low quality of team trips to Hulunbeier because of the familiarity with Hulunbeier. Not enough, there are subcontracts to the local land to extract profits, local land to receive limited profits, the quality of play is also reduced, the problem is to kick the ball back and forth, it is recommended to choose a local outdoor company directly docked as well.
Reborn, I stayed at a hotel in Baotou.
🌁Decor: I really like this decor style, very high-end, Italian style, tatami, and a bit of Chinese style.
🏘️Room type/facilities: There are many room types. I used points to upgrade my room type. I checked the rooms first, and each room type is different, so there are many options. The room facilities are very complete and all smart. I forgot to bring a charger, but there is wireless charging, which is very good. You can order anything you need, and the robot will deliver it, including takeout, which is very convenient. The bathroom is designed with dry and wet separation, so it is very convenient to take a shower or wash your face. There are many spare items in the room, and there are public restrooms in the lobby. You can come from far away to use the restroom, and since you are here, you might as well stay for a night!
🎠Nearby attractions: Wanda is nearby, and the location is easy to find. There is a parking lot, and you can add WeChat at the entrance to receive a guide.
🍽️Restaurant: The restaurant is large, so it can accommodate many people. The decor is very luxurious. There is afternoon tea, breakfast, and a tea bar. I tried their breakfast, which is a buffet with many options. They also provide many items that are not available in general hotels, such as makeup remover and ear picks.
👩🏻🦰Service: The service is very, very good. I was given a cup of tea when I entered. On such a cold day, a cup of hot tea when you enter is a plus. It is very heartwarming. Then they cleaned my glasses. I didn't know my glasses were so dirty. Really, they said I could call them if I had any problems. There were many of us, so they gave us some toiletries. They delivered them in less than five minutes, and the efficiency was very high. I can sincerely recommend it!
💗Other tips: The hotel has many styles. If you don't like it, you can change floors. Each floor has a different style. The service attitude is very good. There are things I haven't mentioned, but it is really very good and very user-friendly!
Meiligen is definitely worth a visit!
Travel time: Depart around 10 am. This time is perfect because you don't have to get up too early and you can avoid the crowds!
Transportation: If you have a car, driving is the best option. It takes about 40 minutes to get there. If you don't have a car, don't worry. You can take a direct bus, which is convenient and fast!
Lunch recommendation: When you arrive at the scenic area, have a hearty lunch first! We highly recommend Meiligen's spring water fish and authentic farmhouse dishes, which will definitely delight your taste buds.
Ticket tips: Buy a ticket to enter the scenic area. If you don't want to walk too much, you can choose to buy a cable car + ticket combo, which is time-saving, labor-saving, and fun!
Cable car experience: You must try the cable car here. Sitting in the cable car and overlooking the entire valley is breathtaking, and you can take beautiful photos!
Hiking route: After getting off the cable car, it's time for a wonderful hike. First, go see the spectacular waterfall. The sound of the water is roaring, and the air is fresh. It's so healing! Next, you can visit San Die Liu Yun, where every corner is full of surprises! You can choose to take the cable car again on the way down, which is easy and pleasant.

Baotou | Soviet buildings and Tank Avenue in the steel city.
🏙️In Inner Mongolia, besides the natural scenery of the grasslands and the Yellow River, the city tours are also worth looking forward to. When I came to Baotou, I found that besides the industrial features, there are many cultural and historical relics worth seeing. It is a seriously underrated treasure city.
[Soviet Buildings]
Baogang is well-known, but few people know about Steel No. 32 Street. This Russian-style building hidden in the old neighborhood is a residential building left behind by the Soviet Union during its aid construction. It is quiet in the middle of the hustle and bustle, with a nostalgic cultural atmosphere. The pointed roof, thick walls, small vertical windows, and wide building spacing are typical Soviet-style buildings. If you stay for a while, you will find that most of the residents here are retired from Baogang. In the warm afternoon, some sit on benches in the sun, some greet each other warmly, some gather to chat, and some are supported by their families for a walk. The former steel dormitory is the most representative ethnic building among the "Soviet buildings" in Baotou. It condenses the memories of several generations and witnesses the history of Baotou's industrial development.
📮Location: No. 32 Street, Gangtie Street, Wulan Road, Baotou City, Inner Mongolia.
🚗Transportation: Self-driving
🅿️Parking: Free in the community.
[Tank Avenue]
The advantage of self-driving is that you can find more interesting spots. Tank Avenue is probably the only road sign in the country. The intersection is probably the special lane for testing after the tank is produced. If you are lucky, you may see a tank coming out.
📮Location: 800 meters west of 668 kilometers of National Highway 110, Qingshan District, Baotou City, Inner Mongolia (Yiji Motor Vehicle Inspection Station, under the viaduct).
🚗Transportation: Self-driving
🅿️Parking: On the roadside
🍂Nearby: There is a grassland in the city to play.
⚠️Tips:
√The residential buildings are very quiet, so tourists should be careful not to disturb the residents.
√In front of the building is the Russian Style Street, which you can visit if you have time. But it is mainly for selling things.
√The location of Tank Avenue is very remote, with no obvious road signs, and the surrounding area is relatively desolate. If you are not driving, it is not recommended to go there.
👉If you are tired of the crowds and want to see something different, come with us~ Looking forward to your attention!

In the past, businessmen went to the west, and when they arrived at this place outside the Great Wall where the wind and sand were full of the sky and the environment was harsh, they paid a lot of hardships and brought back wealth. They retraced the road where the camel team passed and relived the unyielding spirit of the Chinese people.

Green Lung of the Steel City | Here, the wind seems to have a shape.
Saihantala means "beautiful grassland" in Mongolian. Walking through it, the endless green sea and blue sky and white clouds together form a beautiful and harmonious picture.
As the green lung of the steel city, Saihantala Urban Grassland covers an area of over 10,000 mu, forming a sharp contrast with the high-rise buildings on the edge of the city. It seems to be in two completely different worlds. This encounter in the city has a sense of confusion and makes people feel open-minded.
The sky is blue and the water is clear, the trees are lush and the grass is abundant, and the reeds reflect the flowing clouds, which are interesting with the Mongolian bags. The breeze blew, blowing the corners of the pedestrians, blowing the branches of the trees, blowing all the leaves.
Like a sea wave, quiet and peaceful, the wind here also has a shape. The magnificence of nature and the vitality of life are infinitely yearning.

Although the variety is not the most, the braised beef brisket with potatoes, Leshan spicy chicken, golden soup beef, and spicy shrimp (which is very fresh and large) are all very delicious. There is also a western food table, and the drinks are plentiful.
At 6:30 on Sunday evening, I was the only one in the large executive lounge, accompanied by light music, it felt great to have the place to myself.
Breakfast is the standard five-star hotel offering.

Wudangzhao - Guangjue Temple - Badagar
"Wudang" is a transliteration from Mongolian, meaning "willow tree." "Zhao" is Tibetan, originally meaning "elder brother, World-Honored One (Shakyamuni)," and later extended to mean a temple for worshiping Buddha. The name "Wudangzhao" combines Mongolian and Tibetan, and "Temple of the Willow Trees" sounds lush, serene, and refreshing. It is said to be named for the abundant willows and pleasant environment surrounding it. Wudangzhao was first built during the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty (1662-1722) and underwent various degrees of repair and expansion during the Qianlong, Jiaqing, Daoguang, and Guangxu periods, forming the scale seen today. Its Chinese name "Guangjue Temple" was bestowed by Emperor Qianlong in the twenty-first year of his reign (1756), while its Tibetan name "Badagar" implies the meaning of a white lotus. If one were to select a representative Tibetan Buddhist temple from each western province of China, they would be the Potala Palace in Tibet, Ta'er Monastery in Qinghai, Labrang Monastery in Gansu, and Wudangzhao in Inner Mongolia mentioned today. Together, they are known as the "Four Great Temples of Tibetan Buddhism in China."
Encountering Wudangzhao (Part 1)
It was built during the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty (1662-1722) and is a national cultural relic protection unit, a Buddhist holy site for Mongolian Buddhists, and is known as the 'First Temple of the Northern Grasslands' and the 'Little Potala Palace on the Grasslands'. The Suguqin Dugu Palace is located at the forefront of the entire temple and is the place for holding collective gatherings and chanting scriptures. The pillars in the hall are all wrapped with dragon-patterned woolen carpets, the floor is fully carpeted, the walls are painted with colorful murals, and the back hall and the second and third floors enshrine Shakyamuni, Tsongkhapa, and successive generations of Buddhist masters. To the west of the Suguqin Dugu Palace, standing side by side with it, is the Queyila Hall, where Buddhist doctrines are taught. The ten-meter-high bronze statue of Shakyamuni in the hall is the largest bronze Buddha statue in the entire temple.
I miss you very much at Wudangzhao in Baotou
Wudangzhao is a Tibetan Buddhist temple located in Jihuluntu Sumu, Shiguai District, Baotou City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. It was built during the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty and is a national 4A-level scenic spot and a key national cultural relic protection unit. It is one of the four major Tibetan Buddhist temples in China, along with the Potala Palace in Tibet, the Ta'er Monastery in Qinghai, and the Labrang Monastery in Gansu.
1. **Architectural Features**: Wudangzhao is built according to the mountain terrain, without a unified central axis. All the main halls are irregularly scattered in the valley. The main buildings include the existing six large scripture halls, three living Buddha residences, and a shrine housing the relic pagoda of successive living Buddhas. Among them, the Suguqin Dugu Palace is the largest building in the entire temple, serving as a place for collective chanting, with a ten-meter-high bronze statue of Sakyamuni and other important Buddha statues inside.
2. **Historical Origins**: Wudangzhao was originally named Badagarzhao, meaning "White Lotus." The temple was founded during the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty and was rebuilt in the fourteenth year of Qianlong (1749), when it was renamed Guangjue Temple by Emperor Qianlong. The temple has undergone multiple expansions to reach its current scale. Its architectural style is based on the Tashilhunpo Monastery in Tibet, combining Tibetan flat-roofed square structures, with a reasonable layout and artistic value.
3. **Cultural Value**: Wudangzhao is not only the largest Tibetan Buddhist temple in Inner Mongolia but also a higher Buddhist education institution, with schools (Zhacang) specifically for lamas to study scriptures and research Buddhism. Various Buddhist activities, such as the "Mani Festival," are held here annually, attracting a large number of devotees to worship.
Friends in Baotou who are looking for a day trip nearby can come to Wudangzhao! Known as the Little Potala Palace, the overall Tibetan-style architecture is surrounded by mountains and trees, with fresh air. A visit feels like a purification of the soul! The ticket price is 55 yuan, and the shuttle bus is 10 yuan, but it doesn't seem necessary to take the shuttle bus. If you go with friends, you can walk about a kilometer to the temple, enjoying the scenery along the way, including deer. After visiting the temple, you can go up the mountain to the forest park, where the scenery is also very good, and there is a small Aobao. It's really nice to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Kundulun Monastery
In Baotou's Kundulun District, hidden among the industrial area and greenery on the west side of the Kun River, lies a Tibetan Buddhist monastery full of historical significance called Kundulun Monastery. It was first built in the 26th year of the Kangxi reign, over 300 years ago, and is a nationally protected cultural heritage site. Entering through an imposing gate, the courtyard is spacious and clean, with well-arranged halls, a Kalan Square, and a traditional Chinese medicine hall.
Kundulun Monastery now has 10 halls, one of which is the newly restored Sutra Pavilion, while the other 9 have been preserved since the Qing Dynasty. Among them, the murals in the Mahavira Hall have been preserved since the Qing Dynasty, with pigments made from pure natural coral and agate, making them very precious. The architecture of the Small Yellow Temple is very distinctive, combining a Han-style entrance with a Tibetan-style scripture hall. It is said that the caisson ceiling, walls, and Buddha statues inside are also very valuable. Nowadays, Kundulun Monastery has few visitors, making it quite tranquil. The nearby Kundulun Monastery Wetland Park can also be visited together.
