Entering the Land of Gods—Nepal (V): The Customs and Traditions of Bandipur
From the chaotic and bumpy Kathmandu to Pokhara, the elusive beauty of Machapuchare, and the shimmering waves of Phewa Lake, one gradually gets into the mood. When you walk into the ancient town of Bandipur, perched on a ridge, at noon, it is truly a pleasant surprise.
After lunch, crossing a square with towering trees, you arrive at the center of Bandipur town.
Before reaching the street entrance, the companions were already attracted by the yellow brick walls, black windows, and mottled blue doors, stopping to take photos. Standing at the street entrance, just a glance, one is moved by the ancient streets adorned with flowers, eagerly lingering in between.
In the sunny afternoon, one side of the small street is brightly lit by the sun, while the other side is hidden in the shade.
Some people like to bask in the sun, some prefer to sit in the shade, chatting leisurely, drinking coffee, looking at their phones, daydreaming, strolling, taking photos, playing, the whole street is filled with a lazy and comfortable atmosphere. This serene and beautiful ancient town is so unexpected, could it be the lost paradise?
It turns out that Bandipur is considered a national treasure of Nepal, a living museum of Newari culture.
Bandipur was built in the 18th century when a large number of Newari merchants flocked here, establishing shops, temples, and houses. They initially thought this would be a trade station from Tibet, China to India, making a fortune. However, the newly built Prithvi Highway passed through the foot of the mountain, so many merchants withdrew, leaving Bandipur town nestled in the mountains, maintaining its original simplicity.
With the rise of tourism, this beautiful ancient town was discovered. The old walls and carved wooden windows of Newari houses, the smooth and polished stone roads, and the still simple and unadorned folk customs make it a nostalgic pursuit for modern people.
Time is quietly changing this ancient town, with more restaurants, homestays, and cafes. We went to a cafe, said to be co-owned by a European and a local, blending modern and ancient styles, with various charms coexisting, yet the underlying tone remains the ancient Newari style.
What particularly interests people are the children's uniforms, fashionable, elegant, and dignified, much more beautiful than the uniforms of children in our cities, making it hard to believe these are children from an ancient town.
It is said that many of the town's teachers are foreign volunteers, and the impact they bring to the next generation may change the future of this ancient town in ways unknown.
The ancient town of Bandipur was an unexpected highlight of this trip to Nepal. Its ancient charm, its simplicity and clarity, its literary and bourgeois atmosphere, truly make one reluctant to leave.

The Tharu people are a minority ethnic group in Nepal and a beautiful cultural landscape of Chitwan in Nepal. The Tharu people once lived in Northern India and migrated to Chitwan during the 16th century to escape ethnic conflicts. They have tenaciously settled and survived in the struggle against the humid and muggy tropical jungle, with its mosquitoes and miasma. Because the Tharu people have successfully resisted malaria, it is believed that they possess a natural immunity. They are slim with dark brown skin, and their eyes reflect simplicity and sincerity. Even though Chitwan has long become a famous tourist attraction, the Tharu people here still live their lives in a calm and composed manner, following their original and natural state, unaffected by the influx of tourists.
Spring Check-in at Nepal's Bandipur.
On the way to Pokhara, we passed through an ancient town, a town forgotten by the world, which is Bandipur.
In the mid-18th century, this place was a mandatory route for trade between Tibet in China and India, attracting a large number of Newari merchants who established shops, temples, and inns here. At that time, the town was bustling with activity and luxury. However, by 1960, the newly constructed Prithvi Highway passed below the town, causing Bandipur to lose its status as a transportation hub, and the town returned to tranquility.
The town is small, with a main street paved with blue stone slabs called Old Bazaar, lined with distinctive medieval architecture on both sides. The buildings on both sides of the street are mostly in the traditional Newari style (with red brick walls and carved wooden windows), and these well-preserved 18th-century buildings give it a rich medieval atmosphere. Coffee shops, restaurants, and boutique hotels renovated from old 18th-century buildings give the town a unique European charm, making it worth a visit.
Nepal | The Living Museum of Newari Culture - Bandipur Ancient Town
Bandipur Ancient Town is a quiet and beautiful small town nestled in the mountains, with a rich historical and cultural heritage. It was built in the 18th century when a large number of Newari people established shops, temples, and residences here, intending it to be a trading post. Unfortunately, the newly constructed roads did not reach up the mountain, so many people moved away, leaving Bandipur Town forgotten among the mountains, maintaining its age-old simplicity as a living museum of Newari culture.
Visiting the indigenous residential areas of Nepal is essentially visiting an old street built on the mountains; they call it the local people's district, where police are responsible for checking passports, claiming over 2,500 years of history, with buildings and ancient trees as evidence.
Accommodation recommendation: Bandipur Hotel, with a warm and comfortable environment, clean and tidy rooms, complete facilities, well-equipped, good service attitude, enthusiastic, and a full experience.
Coordinates: Bandipur Ancient Town, Nepal
Transportation: Group tour, convenient and quick parking

Bandipur
Bandipur is a small town above the clouds. It's a perfect 1 day stop in between Kathmandu and Pokhara. If you're an early riser, you may be able to catch one of the most incredible sunrise.
This photo was taken right before a small Thunderstorm where the sky turned orange right before sunset.
