2025 Alsfeld Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in September)

Growing up reading the Brothers Grimm fairy tales, I never imagined that one day I would embark on a special road trip along the "Fairy Tale Route." Starting from Frankfurt, I traveled through medieval towns, villages that inspired fairy tales, and artistic hubs, exploring the sources of inspiration for the Brothers Grimm. 📍Itinerary: Frankfurt → Hanau → Alsfeld → Kassel → Trendelburg → Erfurt → Meissen → Dresden🚗 Renting a car with SIXT, a reliable German brand, I was able to get a very new car, and booking through Trip.com made pickup quick and easy. You can check out my previous note for more details. ① Frankfurt Frankfurt is Germany’s transportation and financial center, where steel meets classic charm. It’s less than half an hour from Hanau, the starting point of the Fairy Tale Route, making it a crossroads between adulthood and childhood. It’s time to start a fairy tale journey. ② Hanau Hanau is the birthplace of the Brothers Grimm and is known as the starting point of the "Fairy Tale Route." In the city center at the Brothers Grimm statue square, they seem to welcome every fairy tale traveler. ③ Alsfeld Located on the Fairy Tale Route in Hesse, Alsfeld is not only a charming medieval town but also the inspiration for the story of "Little Red Riding Hood." ④ Kassel Kassel is the city where the Brothers Grimm worked for many years compiling their fairy tales. It has a rich cultural heritage and has been the cultural and academic center of Hesse since the 18th century. It is also home to the World Heritage Site Wilhelmshöhe Park. ⑤ Trendelburg This small town is closely linked to the castle tower and the "Rapunzel" legend, making it an immersive destination on the fairy tale route. This time, I stayed in Trendelburg Castle, turning a beautiful dream into reality. ⑥ Erfurt I happened to catch the summer music festival here and saw the city’s vibrant energy. The city center preserves many Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque buildings. ⑦ Meissen Known as the "Porcelain Capital of Germany," Meissen is famous for Meissen porcelain. Beyond its porcelain fame, Meissen is a city about perseverance. Here, art is part of everyday life. Whether it’s the colors of the town or the atmosphere on the streets, there is a refined yet simple quality. ⑧ Dresden Dresden was once the capital of the Kingdom of Saxony. Despite suffering devastating damage during World War II, it remains an elegant city. Along this fairy tale journey, I always found a stop that resonated with me. See you in the video! The owner was a very kind and cheerful woman. I came alone, but she greeted me with a smile. There were cute dolls and props of characters from fairy tales, and most of them looked wonderful and handmade. The photos are only a small part of it, so please stop by and see it all with your own eyes. The admission fee is 3€ for adults and 2€ for children (as of September 2023). The facility has three floors, and on some days they even have reading sessions for children. The toilets are well-maintained and clean. It's a great place for families with children and couples, and even adults can enjoy it alone.
