2025 Agam Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in March)

If you are in Yogyakarta, you cannot miss going to one of the most active volcanoes in the world - Mount Merapi. Situated about an hours north of Yogyakarta, we hired a private vehicle to take us to the village of Umbulharjo, near the foot of Mt Merapi, where we then transferred to a jeep to take us up to Bunker Kaliadem, about as close as we can get to Mt Merapi. Bunker Kaliadem is located 4.7km away from the summit of the volcano, is a fantastic place to view the vista of Merapi. The shelter itself, is also a testament to the sheer power of nature. It was officially opened in 2005 but quickly met its demise in the 2006 Merapi eruption, where it failed to protect 2 persons who sought refuge within its walls. It has since fell into disuse and our visit to the bunker allowed us to have a look into the amenities that were available within - a small washroom and a store room that used to keep supplies like food and oxygen, but has since been overtaken by bats (see third photo). Climbing on top of the bunker is where you can get unblocked view of Mt Merapi. Our anticipation was initially met with a veil of mist and clouds obscuring the majestic peak (see last photo). Patiently, we waited, and as the clouds moved along, we were rewarded with a glimpse of Merapi's towering summit, a sight both awe-inspiring and sublime. The place is excellent for relaxing while enjoy breathtaking scenery overlooking the danau maninjau. A good place for taking a photo and relaxing time with family and friends. The best time to come is in the morning. We can see the whole blue lake from here. It's quite far from town but worth to visit. This place located around 1 hours from bukit tinggi. The trips I picked were to go holiday at Bukittinggi, West Sumatra. The place was so calming and heavenly peaceful. I really enjoy myself during the holiday. So why did I choose this place? First, my mom was born here (that means I'm staying at my grandmom's house), which is technically my hometown. Second, cause I know the place was pretty chilly and calming. I really did nothing other than sleep, eat, and sleep again. Places to go: On my 2nd day, I decided to go to their town, which is Bukittinggi, the place of tourist. It is also known as the top 3 biggest city in West Sumatra and one of the smallest towns in Indonesia (if I'm not mistaken). But if you all preferred a nature worth taking pictures, you all SHOULD go to Puncak Lawang. The view there was worth it so much! They also offered some adventure games, which are paragliding (about 20 minute of flying, the guide said) and flying fox (a short trip, not even 1 minute). Foods: In terms of food, it is hard for me to find a really good place since I preferred homecook (since I have a famly here, so why bother?). But if anything I would recommend you all to try their "Jangek Siram" or "Kerupuk Kulit Sapi Siram" (it is in the 4th picture) istg you could never go wrong with that food TOP OF THE TOP! All in all, I really enjoy myself so much! The kind of trip that my body really needs. To be away from the hustle of the city and be one (kinda) with nature? Can't wait to be back!

The drive to Merabi is lovely, passing through small villages along the way. The closer you get the colder it becomes due to elevation. You have clear views of the volcano early morning before 9am as the clouds will cover it before. Arrive as early as possible! Passing farm fields it’s noteworthy to see the many big leaf plants, they are tobacco plants and one can see the local farmers drying the leaves along the route.
