Chasing Waterfalls: My Solo Adventure to Devil's Bridge Falls
#mytraveldiary
I traded everyday noise for the thunder of waterfalls on a solo trip to Devil's Bridge Falls. This legendary spot in Mid-Wales isn't just a sight; it's a full sensory experience of nature's raw power, perfect for any independent traveler.
What is this place all about? Devil's Bridge is a world-famous series of three bridges stacked atop each other, spanning the deeply wooded gorge of the River Mynach. But the real magic lies in the waterfall trail, where you descend into a mossy, mystical realm to witness water cascading through a dramatic chasm. It's a place of myth, nature, and breathtaking engineering.
Why Here? For the ultimate empowering solo hike. The challenging descent and climb back up is a personal accomplishment. The sheer power of the falls is mesmerizing and best experienced at your own pace, allowing for total immersion in the environment.
My Solo Itinerary:
· Day 1: Drove or took the spectacular Vale of Rheidol Railway from Aberystwyth. Tackled the "Nature Trail" first, descending the steep steps and pathways past the Punch Bowl and into the gorge. Stood on the bridges to see all three layers of history. The roar of the water is unforgettable.
· Day 2: Explored the surrounding area, perhaps visiting the nearby Hafod Estate for more serene walks. Reflected on the experience with a well-earned drink at the Devil's Bridge Hotel before the journey home.
Top Tips for Solo Travelers:
· Wear Sturdy, Grippy Shoes: The steps and paths are extremely steep and can be slippery, especially after rain.
· Take Your Time: Go at your own pace, especially on the ascent. There are benches to stop and catch your breath.
· Pack a Waterproof Jacket: The waterfall spray will leave you misted!
· Check the Train Schedule: If taking the steam railway, book your tickets in advance, especially on weekends.
This trip was a powerful reminder of nature's force and my own capability to explore it alone. The sound of the water was the only companion I needed.

Cliffs, Culture & Complete Freedom: My Solo Escape to Aberystwyth
#mytraveldiary
I just spent a weekend discovering the perfect blend of seaside charm and vibrant energy in Aberystwyth. This historic university town on the Mid-Wales coast is an ideal solo destination, offering stunning scenery, rich culture, and the freedom to explore at your own pace.
What is this place all about? Aberystwyth is a bustling yet friendly coastal town where the Rheidol and Ystwyth rivers meet Cardigan Bay. It’s famed for its Victorian promenade, the ruins of Aberystwyth Castle, and the scenic Cliff Railway leading to panoramic views. It’s a place of dramatic sunsets, student-life buzz, and deep Welsh history.
Why Here? For the perfect mix of activity and relaxation. It’s a safe, walkable town where you can easily fill your day with exploration or simply find a bench to watch the world go by. The welcoming atmosphere makes it easy for solo travelers to feel at home.
My Solo Itinerary:
· Day 1: Arrived and walked the promenade from the castle to the harbour, grabbing fresh chips to eat on the beach. Rode the Cliff Railway to the top for breathtaking views and a coffee at the summit café. Explored the National Library of Wales—a haven of quiet grandeur.
· Day 2: Took the Vale of Rheidol Railway for a stunning steam train journey into the Welsh countryside. Visited the AMMA (Aberystwyth Museum of Modern Art). Finished with a solo dinner at a cozy pub, enjoying the live music.
Top Tips for Solo Travelers:
· Walk Everything: The town is compact. The promenade is perfect for morning or evening strolls.
· Talk to Locals: Welsh hospitality is warm. Don’t be shy to chat in a café or pub.
· Check for Events: The Arts Centre and student unions often have concerts, films, or talks—great solo activities.
· Embrace the Weather: Bring layers and a waterproof coat—the coastal wind is bracing but beautiful!
This escape had it all: culture, coastline, and the complete freedom to do exactly what I wanted, when I wanted.

ABERYSTWYTH: West Wales Day Trip ideas
#postandearn
Aberystwyth is a lovely little seaside town in the West of Wales, with a direct train service from Birmingham. It took almost 4 hours to get here from Manchester (taking 2 different trains) but I've never seen somewhere so stunning 🥰
In the morning:
🏰 Head towards the ruins of Aberystwyth Castle, with views of the North and South beach. Experience a quiet patch of greenery away from the hectic train station 😌
🍨 Get an ice cream on the sea front, taking in the lovely surroundings. Beware of seagulls 🧐
🏛 Walk towards Aberystwyth's University building near the pier. One of the town's oldest buildings, yet so many photo opportunities 📸
In the afternoon:
🚊 Take the heritage tram up Constitution Hill, seeing Aberystwyth from above. If your intrested in the history of photography, pay to go inside the camera obscura. Or, have a quick game of bowling 🎳
📖 Walk up to the Welsh National Library, one of the most stunning buildings I've ever been close up to. Learn more about how the Welsh Language has been preserved and what they are doing currently 🏴
🥗 Have a meal at the Wetherspoons in the train station before the long journey home

A disappointing experience
The view of beach and sunset is a big plus for this little town in West Wales. However, the poor hotel experience makes the trip quite disappointing. It is not clean, and the room is much smaller than expected. There are not many good restaurants.

Aberystwyth northern lights
Standing on Aberystwyth's shore, the cold coastal wind bites through my jacket. Under a starry sky, the Northern Lights begin their dance, faint at first, then growing vibrant with greens and purples. Locals and tourists, faces aglow with wonder, capture the rare spectacle, etching this moment into memory. It was so beautiful and a once in a lifetime time opportunity.
