Karez in Turpan.

Karez in Turpan.

Karez in Turpan After visiting the Flaming Mountains, we experienced the heat of Turpan and then visited the Karez scenic area. Karez has a long history and is used in various countries in Central Asia. It has a history of more than 2,000 years in Xinjiang. The Turpan Basin is located on the southern slope of the eastern Tianshan Mountains. The annual precipitation is only 16.4 mm, but the evaporation is nearly 3,000 mm. According to this natural condition, no crops can grow. Our ancestors cleverly used Karez to bring the snow water and groundwater from the Tianshan Mountains into the farmland, creating a vibrant desert oasis. It makes sense for people to call the Karez project, the Great Wall, and the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal the three major projects of ancient China. Due to the huge Karez project in Xinjiang, there are 1,784 Karez underground canals in Xinjiang, with a total length of 5,272 kilometers. There are 1,237 in Turpan alone, and others are in Hami and other places. On September 3, 2024, it was selected into the World Irrigation Project Heritage List. Karez, both Persian and Uyghur are called Karez. It is composed of vertical wells, underground canals, water outlets, open canals, and flood dams. People can see a pile of round soil bags on the gravel surface. They are arranged in order along the slope and extend to the oasis. This is the vertical well of Karez. The distance between the vertical wells varies with the length of Karez. Generally, there is a vertical well every 20 to 70 meters. A Karez has as few as a dozen vertical wells and as many as hundreds. The vertical wells are connected by underground canals. The vertical well is from deep to shallow. When the ancients dug underground canals, how could they ensure the correct direction? The ancients invented the oil lamp orientation method. That is, when digging an underground canal, hang an oil lamp on the centerline of the vertical well. The digger turns his back to the oil lamp and always digs his own shadow. In this way, different working points can maintain consistency without deviating from the direction. This is the oil lamp orientation method. Because of Karez, there are famous Turpan grapes, watermelons, strawberries, apples, dried apricots, pomegranates, cherries and other fruits, as well as corn, wheat, rice and other grains. And its rapeseed, gourd, various beans and other economic crops. The hot air on the surface of the scorching sun, Cool breeze at the bottom of Karez, The clear stream of the underground canal slowly sent, There is joy in the grape ditch.

🌡️Scorcher Beyond Belief | Turpan

#familytrip The Flaming Mountains, located near Turpan in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China, are a striking natural wonder renowned for their intense heat and vivid red color, especially during sunset. The Flaming Mountains derive their name from the fiery appearance, particularly when sunlight bathes the landscape. The red hues of the mountains create a mesmerizing and surreal visual spectacle. The mountains are primarily composed of red sandstone and conglomerate rocks, contributing to their distinctive color. The high temperatures in the region, especially during the summer, further enhance the reddish tones of the rocks. Turpan is known for its extremely high summer temperatures, and the Flaming Mountains are no exception. The highest temperatures recorded in the Turpan Depression, where the Flaming Mountains are located, have exceeded 50°C (122°F) and ground temperature can go as high as 80°C (175°F).The intense heat in this area, combined with the reflective properties of the red rocks, creates an otherworldly and seemingly "flaming" effect. The Flaming Mountains hold cultural significance, notably mentioned in the classic Chinese literary work "Journey to the West" (Monkey King). The tale describes the challenging journey of the characters through this arid and fiery landscape. The Monkey King's encounter with the Flaming Mountains is a significant part of the narrative, showcasing his bravery, cleverness, and magical abilities as he navigates through this challenging terrain. The vivid description of the harsh conditions and the "flaming" appearance of the mountains adds a mythical and symbolic element to the journey. Tips and Tricks ⁉️ 🚗The Flaming Mountains are easily accessible from Turpan, adding to their popularity among tourists exploring the historical and natural wonders of the Silk Road region. 💧Drink MUCH water. We're not even kidding, once faced with the heat of this place you will physically feel the dehydration taking place. So stay safe and grab a truckload of H2O. 🍳If you are in luck and manage to get here during summer grab a chicken egg along. While enjoying blistering heat, you just might entertain yourself by cooking the egg on the ground. Don't worry, it's not as crazy as it sounds. What else can indicate how hot something actually is, but cooking it straight on the pavement. Impressive! #SpinTheWorld #mytravelhacks #localguides #wecreate

Xinjiang, Turpan, Sugong Tower.

Xinjiang, Turpan, Sugong Tower.

Built in the 43rd year of the Qianlong Emperor (1778), the second generation of the Turpan County King, Suleiman, was built to commemorate and commend his father, the first generation of the Turpan County King, the Qing Dynasty, the Minister of the Qing Dynasty, and the Minister of the Qing Dynasty. The tower is a cylindrical tower, standing in the right corner of the mosque. It has a unique shape and is similar to the Guangzhou Light Tower. It may have been referenced during construction. The tower body gradually collects upwards from the bottom, and the collection is very large. The more it is tightened, the more it is tightened, and the round top is collected, and there is a tower on the top.

MARS?! No, it’s Turpan, Xinjiang 🇨🇳

#traveldiaries Wow 🤩 We felt like we have stepped foot on Mars! This is not a famous tourist spot yet so there won’t be a lot of visitors blocking your photos. There were only a few cars we saw in this valley and phone signal becomes so patchy in this area of Turpan. I don’t think there’s a public bus going to this place as we didn’t see one. Most of the cars we saw were either private cars or rented taxis. Ticket price: 40 rmb each Length of visit: 2 hours SUGGESTION: book through your hotel or hostel. Normally there are shared tour or private ones. We got a car by ourself for 300 rmb visiting 4 tourist spots in Turpan and this was our last stop. It was really worth it. If you are with your friends then you can share the cost. Double check with trip app as well if they offer any tour or arranged car to this place. Enjoy! 😊

2,300 Ancient City Ruins in Turpan 🇨🇳

#traveldiaries This ancient city ruins dates back to 2,300 years. It is so fascinating to see such ruins knowing that this used to be a place where people thrived and lived. There are two ancient city ruins in Turpan but Jiaohe City Ruins is actually the best preserved ancient city ruins in the world. This city is one of the key passageways of the silk road. One more interesting fact of this ancient city is that it lies on a 30 meter high plateau and apparently used to be a capital city of ancient Jushe State. Before you are driven to the ruins, the shuttle bus will stop you at a museum which shows you how the ancient city ruins used to look like. You will have a glimpse of their household even their backyards and livelihood. Just very interesting to see. Tips: 1. apply sun cream because there’s no shade here and you will be completely burned if you don’t cover up. 2. Bring water as it is really dry here and super hot. Ticket price: around 150 if i recall correctly. This is including the museum and the shuttle bus and the entry to the ancient city ruins. Length of visit: 2 hours

Turpan Sugong Tower: A journey through time to Islamic ancient architecture.

Turpan Sugong Tower: A journey through time to Islamic ancient architecture.

On the road to explore cultural travel, we always want to find those ancient buildings that can touch the soul. The Sugong Tower in Turpan is such a place that makes people yearn for. It is not only one of the largest ancient towers in the Islamic ancient buildings in Xinjiang, but also a landmark with a profound history and culture. Sugong Tower, this name sounds full of mystery and charm. It stands in Munar Village in the eastern suburbs of Turpan, like an old man who has experienced vicissitudes of life, quietly telling the past stories. This ancient tower was built by the famous Qing Dynasty general Turpan Junwang Emin and Zhuo at the age of 83, leading the children to donate 7,000 taels of silver to express their loyalty to the Qing Dynasty. This deep affection and persistence make people respect this national hero. Walking under the Sugong Tower, you seem to be able to travel through time and space, and feel the subtlety and grandeur of Islamic architectural art. This ancient tower was built with sun-dried raw soil bricks. This construction method is very common in the dry and rainless Turpan area and has a long historical tradition. It is not only a building, but also a living history textbook, allowing people to appreciate the beauty while also appreciating the integration and collision of Chinese culture and Islamic culture. The charm of Sugong Tower lies not only in its architectural art, but also in its history and culture. Here, you can imagine the hardships and efforts of Emin and Zhuo leading the clan to build the ancient tower, and you can also feel their loyalty and respect for the Qing Dynasty. This sense of historical heaviness allows people to think more about culture, history, and human nature while appreciating the beauty. Of course, when you come to Turpan Sugong Tower, you can not only appreciate the beauty of the ancient tower, but also feel the local customs. In the nearby villages, you can taste authentic Turpan food and feel the enthusiasm and hospitality of the locals. This perfect combination of humanities and nature makes Turpan Sugong Tower a rare tourist attraction. In general, Turpan Sugong Tower is a breathtaking Islamic-style ancient tower. It is not only a building, but also a history, a culture, and a textbook of human nature. If you want to explore Islamic ancient buildings, you don't have to go to Iran or the Middle East.
