Introduction Glacier Tours in Shigatse

Introduction
Some information may have been translated by Google Translate
Shigatse is home to many magnificent glacier landscapes, attracting many tourists who come here specifically to see the glaciers. The main local glaciers, such as the Karola Glacier, are famous for their spectacular glacier landscapes and vast ice and snow areas. In autumn, the Karola Glacier presents a crystal blue glow under the sunlight, which contrasts sharply with the surrounding snow-capped mountains, and the scenery is particularly charming. Visitors can walk along the glacier trail and enjoy it up close. At the same time, it also provides opportunities for ice climbing and snowboarding, which is suitable for tourists who like adventure and challenges. The Qudennima Glacier is famous for its pure seracs, ice walls and dreamy blue faults. The gravel, sand and towering snow-capped mountains on both sides of the glacier together form a magnificent picture. Visitors need to hike about 3 kilometers to reach the glacier. Along the way, you can enjoy the beautiful scenery deep in the northern slope of the Himalayas.

Xinjiang-Tibet Line—

Xinjiang-Tibet Line—

On the eighth day of the Xinjiang-Tibet Line journey, we set off from Dingri, passed through Lazi and Shigatse, and finally reached Jiangzi County, covering a total distance of 340 kilometers, which took about five and a half hours by car. The journey is not very long, and there are no particularly important scenic spots along the way. Shortly after departure in the morning, we got on the familiar National Highway 318, passing by a 5000-kilometer monument. Now, this place has been developed into a large leisure square next to the 318. Thinking back to the days when a few people took photos around a small kilometer marker, the changes are quite significant. In Shigatse, we experienced Tibetan cuisine at a restaurant near Tashilhunpo Monastery. Judging by the menu alone, apart from the slightly more numerous beef and mutton dishes, there is not much difference from ordinary Chinese cuisine. It seems to have been adapted, and the prices are not expensive. Many Tibetans were also dining in the restaurant. Since it was still early, we visited the Palcho Monastery in Jiangzi County. This is a unique monastery where the Sakya, Shalu, and Gelug schools of Tibetan Buddhism coexist. I had never been here before, so I took the opportunity to visit. Tomorrow (September 14), we will set off from Jiangzi, visit the Karola Glacier and Yamdrok Lake, and reach the final destination of this Xinjiang-Tibet Line journey in the afternoon.

Pelkor Chode Monastery

Pelkor Chode Monastery

#ancienttownvibes Pelkor Chode Monastery, located near Shigatse, is a remarkable site that beautifully blends spirituality and artistic heritage. As I entered the monastery, I was immediately struck by its stunning architecture, featuring intricate murals and statues that reflect Tibetan Buddhism's rich traditions. The main hall, adorned with colorful thangkas and detailed carvings, creates a serene atmosphere perfect for contemplation. One of the highlights of my visit was the Kumbum Stupa, a unique structure with numerous chapels and exquisite artwork, each offering a glimpse into the profound spirituality of the region. The surrounding landscape adds to the monastery’s charm, with breathtaking views of the Himalayas in the distance. Overall, Pelkor Chode Monastery is a must-visit for anyone seeking to experience the cultural and spiritual essence of Tibet, offering a peaceful retreat that resonates long after leaving.

Xinjiang-Tibet Highway - Yamdrok Lake, Karola Glacier

Xinjiang-Tibet Highway - Yamdrok Lake, Karola Glacier

Day 9 on the Xinjiang-Tibet Highway (September 14), we drove from Gyantse along G349, passing Manla Reservoir, Karola Glacier, and Yamdrok Lake, then took the Yaye Expressway to Lhasa. The total distance was about 270 km. Because there was a section of expressway, it took less than 5 hours to drive. We checked in at the Tibet Hotel at 6 pm, officially ending the Xinjiang-Tibet Highway trip. The total distance was more than 3,100 km, and it took 8 days (starting from 0 km in Yecheng). We will rest in Lhasa for two days. We had seen the attractions along the way today. Karola Glacier was covered by clouds and could not be seen. Only Yamdrok Lake, although we had seen it many times, was still amazing, especially when we saw it from a different angle with a drone.
