New Inn ★★★★

📍 Coleford, Colebrooke

"We visited for Sunday lunch, we had booked. The staff were friendly and welcoming, such a lovely pub. We both went for the pork roast and was not disappointed....standard meal size was big but all the food was perfectly cooked and more vegetables to add to your plate with a very large gravy boat . Only one of us had pudding which was the sticky toffee pudding ...another big portion and delicious Definitely will be returning again, such a gem of a pub"

Bampton Townhouse

Bampton Townhouse ★★

📍 19 Fore St, Bampton

"Great marketing and a very comfortable bed but very far from luxurious! We were in the biggest room with nowhere to put our clothes. I’ m 5ft 6” and could barely reach the cost pegs which were too large for my coats; there was nowhere else to hang up clothes and the couple of tiny drawers were big enough for underwear only. Cases had to be opened on the floor. Coffee/tea but no milk were available in the kitchen downstairs (I got dressed again and went to the Spar opposite for milk). A tiny plastic box in the bathroom held the very mean selection of shampoo etc. ( only enough shampoo for one and a couple of sample type sachets of bath oil). Are 2018 magazines sufficiently old to be considered retro? That’s the reading material in the room. Perhaps the owner has not noticed the damp in the wall beside the large mirror. This is an AirB&B at best, certainly not a hotel."

Fox & Hounds Country Hotel

Fox & Hounds Country Hotel ★★★

📍 1 Eggesford Country Estate, Chawleigh

"We have just come away from the Fox and Hounds after a 3 night stay. We paid a little extra for the suite but it was so worth it! Beautifully decorated, immaculately clean and spacious - the perfect home from home. We were surprised at the attention to detail, a full kitchen with every utensil needed and even leaving some little doggy biscuits to welcome the furry guest. The grounds are well maintained and staff more than friendly towards dogs. We paid with dining included, at £35 pp per night for dinner upfront. Unfortunately, we did not feel this is value for money. With soggy burgers, cold breakfast and at times inattentive staff, the “service” was lacking. More worryingly, seafood came out consistently barely warm or cold, making it inedible. One manager left us with no drinks for over an hour, meaning we had to share a single glass of water. Food is not value for money and not as premium as advertised. When checking out we expressed this disappointment to the hotel, providing an opportunity to rectify further - instead we had to pay £10 for additional drinks. Rather disappointingly, we were promised that the first meal would wiped, only now we have left the hotel we find these so call “promises” are empty and only being refunded 20% of what we were promised (still far below what we would want to pay). Further still, I was told no one was available, but my partner was put straight through to a manager showing clear avoidance of the issue. Whilst the room was nice, the food and post-stay service has been abysmal and unfortunately completely overshadowed what few benefits the hotel has. We would like to thank the head of Housekeeping and interior designers who gave us something to praise about our stay."

The Quarrymans Rest
8.7 (14 reviews)

The Quarrymans Rest ★★★

📍 Bampton St, Bampton

"Called in for a drink to The Quarryman's Arms, after doing some canvassing with friends. I was last there over 8 years ago. What a change! We were welcomed by the landlady, who had on offer a wide range of real ales, ciders and lagers. The pub had a greatly improved village pub feel, with a real buzz. Bampton has two pubs and both have their own unique feel."

Bridge House
9.7 (13 reviews)

Bridge House ★★★★

📍 24 Luke St, Bampton

"We booked all 3 rooms for several days for a family wedding in the town. It couldn't have been a better place to stay. Very comfortable beds in beautifully appointed rooms, and the owner, Caroline, being an exceptional host. The food was also delicious, with the lemon curd biscuits going down especially well with my wife. Bridge House was the epitome of rest and calm before & after busy days of wedding preparation and celebration. I cannot recommend it highly enough."

Hillside Bed and Breakfast

Hillside Bed and Breakfast ★★★

📍 Hillside, Mid Devon District

"Can only praise Sue at the Hillside-nice spacious room-very clean-big bed and a delicious breakfast as well. She goes above and beyond to make you feel welcomed on your stay. Left a piece of jewellery by mistake and Sue was kind enough to send back to us. As a bonus there is a pub just across the road and a very nice country park close by to stroll through if you feel inclined. All in all a recommended place to visit ..*****"

Anchor Inn

Anchor Inn ★★★

📍 B3222, Morebath

"We called in by chance, with our elderly mother, during the late afternoon, and we were treated with good humour and generosity by the staff. Great sandwich, excellent hot chocolate, and, according to my brother, fine beer. We will be back for sure, and can recommend wholeheartedly."

"We stopped here for three nights while visiting the area. FAB! Lovely comfortable room (2) with bath and shower. The breakfast was delicious with a choice of full EB, eggs benedict, haddock, kippers etc. That set us up for the day, returning for a pint or two before dinner. Again lovely home cooked food and a great selection for dinner. The location is idyllic, in a hamlet with just a few houses, river/stream runs alongside and there's outside seating at the rear. It's a bit off the beaten track but this means it's wonderfully quiet, with minimal passing traffic. There are lovely walks along the lanes and fields for a stroll. A big thanks to the friendly helpful staff who made our stay a great experience, not forgetting the chatty parrot Captain!."

"Best pub I've been in in a long, long time! A proper, honest pub. Very friendly. Well kept beer and a pickled duck egg! What more do you want? If you remember when pubs were pubs then don't miss this beauty. Thank you for making us so welcome. See you soon."

"Bridge House was a great choice for our stop-over in Bampton. The room we stayed was great with a large bed and a great sized bathroom. Th room was spotlessly clean and we were treated to a lovely breakfast in the morning. Caroline was a great host and even supplied us with a fabulous cream tea on our arrival. Definitely highly recommended."

Hillside Bed and Breakfast ★★★
"The lady was great, very polite and helpful. The room itself great and the bed was huge. It had everything you needed and more. Good night's sleep. The breakfast was probably the best I'd been looked after in a hotel and everything was great. If I'm ever in that area again it will be my first thought of place to stay."

"The owners have pitched this pub just right. Perfect for families, couples or a swift pint if you are on your own. Food amazing with whopping portions. Chef really flexible and can cook everything on the menu to an exceptional standard. The setting is beautiful against the back drop of a River and beautifully tended gardens. We have a holiday let on Exmoor and advise all our guests to come here and it never disappoints. Huge credit to the owners and the staff, who are always really friendly."

The Exeter Inn ★★★★
"A pleasant country pub with appealing features such as the open fire and low ceilings. The 'snug' area was chilly and not so appealing but bar area was warm and welcoming. We were greeted by a friendly Jonathan. Accommodation was pleasant, again some lovely features but very dusty and lacking attention to detail. Sadly, the food and service was a HUGE let down and for that reason I wouldn't return. The restaurant was cold and draughty, waitress service almost non existant and food served (after a long wait) was cold and I do mean cold. (Im not someone who is fussy about piping hot food served on hot plates but this wasnt even luke warm, it was cold) Breakfast was equally disappointing with a pleasant looking plate placed down only to discover it was cold - stone cold beans and egg are yuk. Perfect for a drink or two but wouldn't waste my time or money in staying for a meal or overnight stay Lots of potential here but the Exeter Inn is destined to fail if it continues like this & no matter how much positivity the over enthusiastic Jonathan shows, it doesn't make up for the many other misdemeanors "
