Just back from a 10 day stay which we enjoyed after a shaky start. We had booked half board in a Privilege room with a sea view but on arrival we were shown to a ground floor room in the Privilege section and after leaving our baggage unpacked took stock of the room and it's location. After a short debate as we rarely complain, we decided to ask to be moved as it wasn't the room we had booked. We went back to Reception and spoke to the girl who had checked us in but she wasn't for budging, insisting the room was what we had booked even bringing up a picture on the computer of the view from the patio! We told her all that could be seen was a green hedge and no Sea view and after a bit of debate which was starting to get heated a voice from behind a screen said something in Spanish and the girl then started to look for another room. We later discovered another 3 couples had been offered the same ground floor rooms in the Privilege section and had refused them for the same reason as us. They were moved to rooms on the upper floors in the Privilege section but there were none available for us and we were offered and accepted a Superior room on the 6th floor of the main hotel building. It was interesting to see that 2 days later the hedge was reduced in height! That evening we went for dinner in the Privilege Restaurant and were both disappointed in our meals. By this stage we were beginning to wonder if we had made a bad choice in the Esmeralda as we had seen areas round the hotel which were tired and in need of some TLC. However, it started to improve from the next morning. I thoroughly enjoyed my breakfasts all 10 mornings as did my wife most mornings. We ate in the Stromboli restaurant two nights and were both impressed with our meals the first night but my wife less so on the 2nd night and apart from 2 less than appealing evening meals in the main buffet restaurant we had very pleasant and enjoyable meals in the Privilege restaurant for the rest of our stay. There was nothing wrong with the food on offer in the buffet restaurant but neither of us enjoys buffet style meals. Our room - 2651 - had a super view of the pools and the Ocean and was spotless with very comfortable beds and pillows All staff we encountered were both very pleasant and professional and I would particularly mention Tracey who looked after the Privilege lounge, Loli in the Privilege Restaurant and Jhuly from Housekeeping who kept our room spotless. The Esmeralda is a very large hotel with a fantastic balcony just off the lobby area with super views of the pools area and the ocean. The hotel is kept spotless but there are areas where the tiles on the ground are showing signs of wear and tear but there seems to be in place arrangements to have these replaced. The Privilege lounge is smaller than others we have encountered and the food selection on offer is not great. On checking out we found for some reason we had been charged for eating in the Stromboli on one of the two nig

I booked this hotel knowing it would be on the quiet side of the Island as it was our first holiday with my girl who is 15 months old. Within a 20 minute walk however, there is a shopping centre, spar shop, beach and some bars. We walked there on a few occasions and it was always quite pleasant. One day we caught the bus to the oasis wildlife park - this picks you up from the hotel across the road and is €5 per adult, the baby was free. There are some smaller mini markets nearby where we were able to pick up milk for the little ones bottles as there is a fridge in the room. Now onto the hotel: Staff - such lovely members of staff who were kind and welcoming. They always said hello to us and paid attention to my daughter at meal times, they offered to get us a highchair if we needed one. Entertainment - there was something on every day (except weds), a kids disco every night with party dances and music on around the pool which, we didn’t find invasive. Plenty of pool tables and table tennis as well as a gym if you wanted to use it. Food and drink - drink is a help yourself basis including alcohol. Every one was polite and no queues. Food was basic but edible, similar things every day which wasn’t a bad thing. My little girl can be picky but there was always something for her. Rooms - no air con but I knew this before we went. The bedroom has a large ceiling fan in situ. The staff had already put a cot in the room ready for us with bedding on. We had a small patio outside which was nice in the evening once the kid was in bed. We got a suite so there was a fridge in the room. Added my Netflix to the telly then took it off at the end. Shower is powerful. Overall the hotel is clean and tidy, the cleaners come almost every day and you can ask for new towels etc if required. It is a quiet hotel but it’s very relaxing. We were the only English people there for the first few days and it was not a bad thing, I still felt very comfy in the environment. We would go again.

We returned to this hotel following the very enjoyable experience we had last year. We requested the same room and the hotel honoured our request and we we very happy as this room is probably the best we have stayed in. It was a sea view Suite and what a view overlooking the the full length of the beautiful beach directly above the hotel swimming pool. The pool area as are all the balconies are covered with artificial grass fantastic the pool though small is more than adequate and heated and there are loads of sun beds well spaced out the whole area is very pleasant. Our room was very comfortable and was cleaned thoroughly every day. Breakfast and Dinner both buffets the food was very good ,quality and variety very good, staff very efficient, attentive and pleasant. We spent 7 nights what we were seeking was a week of total relaxation and that's exactly what we had. Now Costa Calma is a quiet area there is not a great deal to do that was fine for us. The beach is excellent. Now if we were to have any criticism of the hotel it would be in the entertainment provided. There is one bar that's fine but each night there is advertised entertainment. Our 7 nights on 3 nights we had 1 night music quiz 1 night movie quiz and 1 night bingo starting at 9 each finishing before 10. The other 4 nights did have an entertainer /entertainers but again it started at 9 and was finished at 10. The bar had a grand piano and it would have been really good if someone would have been playing some or every night while the bar was open. However this aside this Adult Only hotel is excellent and we research a lot of hotels we travel several times a year sometimes with our family. If your looking for a weeks relaxation we would certainly recommend the Crystal Beach Hotel in Costa Calma.

I've just returned from an inclement week in Esquinzo. It is about 90 mins in a transfer from the airport. On the southern tip. Let me commence with a comment from a staff member 'it's not just quiet here. It's dead'. On arrival at the hotel the super tardy receptionist proclaimed two things 'no English' and 'passport now'. I was then provided a single piece of A4 paper which she drew a arrow on to point me to my room. Rooms are basic. Very basic. There was a very pleasing alarm clock type drilling from building work that awoke me daily from 8am. This is if the fact that staircases and upstairs apartments running over your bedroom doesn't get you. There is a wide array of cats running free and on the one morning there was no drilling, cleaning staff awoke me at 8 to reinforce I was leaving that day (8 hours later, they provide you no departure info). There is no WiFi (reception aside). There is no information. At all. (some basic room info in your kitchen in German aside). There are no offered or advertised excursions. At all. In 'esquinzo' there is a stunning beach. There is a small friendly bar (that only sells reheated frozen pizza) a tiny mini mart and that folks is it. No shop(S) . There is a restaurant attached to another hotel who turn you away and close for long periods. The monte del Mar restaurant food is awful with service similar to the reception. Other people talk about 'walking' to the next town 'Jandia'. It is not a town. It is a collection of 4 and 5 star all inclusive hotels which if you don't have one of their bands on your wrist they don't let you in. There is a supermarket. See previous of no cafes, bars etc. It is also a miserable 25 min hike there over mostly wasteland. However, here you can get a taxi (the hotel when I asked to order one, said they had, but didn't). Near 'Jandia' there is a great beach and bar. You need to be fit and able as it's a fair slog down a mountain, but worthwhile. (best just hit Esquinzo beach and follow the beach right). The nearest town with a couple of actual cafes, bars or eateries is Morro Jable. It's €12 in a taxi. Food is available but very average. Unless you want absolute total seclusion with limited access to food, daily noise, grumpy staff and limited views from your room, then please, swerve this place.

I will try to summarise : I visited the hotel for 4 weeks to celebrate a “big” birthday. , partly I was alone Most of the time joined by other members of my family and friend. Reception / check in was lengthy as only one member of staff to deal with this for 7 of us. Most other queries involving reception also involved queuing for considerable time due to no staff. Room : I requested a sea view but the sea was only visible if I stood on tiptoes and peered over solar panels on the roof below. Several trips to reception to change room - in the end my family chose to upgrade my stay to the “my favourite club” and I was given a perfect room with beautiful sea view. Food : I cannot complain atall about the food , even after 4 weeks stay I still had choice , quality and absolutely no need to go hungry Likewise drinks - lots of choice and plentiful . No need atall to go thirsty Entertainment: as the hotel clientele is predominantly French a lot of the entertainment was geared to them. I knew this beforehand as I’d researched the hotel so was prepared. There was English included from 9.30 pm which some may find a little late. I was ok The animation team were mostly French but there were 2 members who stood out for me -Sara and Ozz -who tried so hard to keep us involved and in particular the days I was on my own really looked after me. Sara went 100 percent above and beyond to include my 7 year old granddaughter in the dancing in the evenings which made her holiday special Pools : outdoor pools freezing cold , indoor heated pool ok but the area around the pool was constantly full of puddles of water , extremely slippery and I fell on day 2 of my holiday -at 69 years old could have meant broken bones ! Thankfully I’m relatively strong boned but still made me very anxious to go in alone The lifeguard seem more interested looking at his mobile phone than keeping poolside dry Cleanliness : no problem here , everywhere was spotless an rooms cleaned towel change daily Beach : a 6/7 min walk down to beach over some rough terrain , but I managed ok . Bit of a climb back up but taken slowly if needed was fine. Lovely beach bar and sunloungers €5 cash only - wonderful sandy beach and fab waves! On the whole I had a good stay as did family and friends who came to join me over the month . (18 in total) My only reason for not giving 5/5 was the general attitude of SOME of the staff . They didn’t seem to be interested in their clients , some reception staff, most of the pool bar staff, some of the kitchen staff just didn’t seem to be interested in making us feel welcome . It sometimes felt like we were a bit of a problem being there and that was hard to understand for me. I’ve worked in hospitality and I know a smile and a warm welcome costs nothing . I was not a complainer atall I just wanted to feel valued and didn’t feel that sadly . But - 5/5 most certainly goes to Ozz and Sara 🎉🎉 they both made the difference!
