The Part-Time Soldier | Farnham Town Council

Mar 9, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Farnham

Patrick Crowley’s talk on the Part-Time Soldier will explore the challenges of defending the country, using a balance of regular and part-time soldiers. Farnham has had Territorial Army, then Army Reserve soldiers, based in the town for many years – why not come and hear about their contribution to the nation’s defence? Rose, Castle and Crown: Hampshire and The Isle of Wight's Citizen Soldiers, this new book, written by Colonel (Retd) Patrick Crowley MBE DL, is a unique history of the part-time soldier of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, from the time of the militia, yeomanry and volunteer, through to the Territorial Army and today’s Army Reserve. This is all placed in the wider context of the British Army’s history. Rose, Castle and Crown underscores the challenge and sacrifice that all military volunteers, throughout history, have had to make balancing the needs of service with family demands and their main civilian employment. It also demonstrates that reservists continue to significantly contribute to the United Kingdom’s military capabilities. Patrick Crowley, a deputy colonel of the Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment, is currently the chief executive of the South East Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association, an arms-length body which supports the interest of reserves and cadets in the south east. He has written seven previous books on military history including Kut 1916: The Forgotten British Disaster in Iraq, Loyal to Empire: The Life of General Sir Charles Monro 1860-1929 and Infantry Die Hards: The Anatomy of a Regiment. He lives in Hampshire. Information Source: Farnham Literary Festival | eventbrite

FAS is also offering free membership for this event to people who are not yet full members of the Society. Works (2D only) should be hung by 9:00am and remain in place until about 4:00pm. The fee is £10 per member per market, payable in advance (you will receive details of how to pay once you book). No commission is payable on sales. Due to space constraints, the maximum number of members who can be accommodated at each table is limited to 6, and we need 5 in order to go ahead with the event. For the same reason, wall space per member will be limited to about 80cm wide by 198cm high. Artwork may not be attached to the wall but may be hung from picture rails at 198cm (78 ) and 142cm (56 ) from the floor. This means that each artist should be able to display about 6 average-sized frames. It will be possible to place business cards, greeting cards and publicity material on the table. Should space permit, small easels and browsers may also be used. Each member attending will need to do their own picture hanging (including providing picture hooks and wire or cord) and commit to stewarding for a 2-hour period on the day.
