The Peter Summerfield Public Lecture: The Israel-Iran Relationship | BNJC (Brighton & Hove Jewish Community)

Jul 1, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Brighton and Hove
Cultural Experiences
The Peter Summerfield Public Lecture Fatal Attraction: Understanding the Israel-Iran Relationship Lior Sternfeld (Penn State University) Few know that Iran was the second Muslim country to recognise Israel after 1949, initiating three decades of close partnership that included Israeli support for the Shah's regime. The 1979 Iranian Revolution dramatically altered this alliance, officially severing diplomatic ties on February 1, 1979. Yet, paradoxically, behind the fierce rhetoric, covert collaboration continued during the brutal eight-year Iran-Iraq war. Since then, these nations have existed in a precarious state of mutual hostility and dangerous brinkmanship. This lecture examines the complex dynamics between these countries and their societies, with special attention to the significant developments and escalating tensions of the past 18 months. Join us for an expert analysis of one of geopolitics' most consequential and misunderstood relationships. Lior Sternfeld is Professor of History and Jewish Studies at Penn State University. He is a social historian of the modern Middle East, specialising in the histories of Jewish communities and other minorities in the region. His first book, Between Iran and Zion: Jewish Histories of Twentieth-Century Iran (Stanford University Press, 2018), explores the integration of Jewish communities into Iran’s nation-building projects, set against the backdrop of Iranian nationalism, Zionism, and constitutionalism. Currently, he is working on two book projects: The Origins of Third Worldism in the Middle East and a study of the Iranian-Jewish diaspora in the U.S. and Israel. The Peter Summerfield Public Lecture is part of the Max and Hilde Kochmann Summer School for PhD students organised by the Weidenfeld Institute/Centre for German-Jewish Studies in cooperation with the Centre for Jewish Studies of the Karl Franz Universität in Graz and the European Association of Israel Studies. The public lecture will be followed by a reception All welcome Information Source: BNJC | eventbrite

Shakespeare hasn’t written anything new for an age, so we thought we would give him a hand... Using his language, your audience suggestions, and our overactive imaginations, ShakeItUp create a brand-new Shakespeare play live on stage, complete with live music, songs, and plenty of laughs. Pick your authentic Shakespearean genre: Epic History, Romantic Comedy, or Gruesome Tragedy! Pen your wittiest Shakespearean line for our brave actors to pull from their suitably-Shakespearean breeches when they need a helping hand – the twist? They’ll have no idea what the line will be before they say it! Then sit back and watch the hilarity unfold in a totally bonkers play that Willy Shakes himself would be proud of. Expect big laughs, high drama, and plenty of Bard-based Bedlam! Please note this is an outdoor venue. In common with standard theatre practice, money is only refunded if a performance is cancelled by the performers. Performances are only cancelled in extreme conditions. A TRICK OF THE MIND: How The Brain Invents Your Reality | The Grand Central, Brighton

Jul 7, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Brighton and Hove
Conferences
For decades, scientists have tried to understand how our brains work, not realising that the answer lies much closer to home than it seems. The latest research in neuroscience and psychology suggests that the brain is doing the same thing that the scientists are: using past experiences to build theories of how the world works, and using these models to predict and make sense of it. Through this process, your brain constructs the reality that you live in. Daniel Yon takes the research one step further, uncovering how your brain colours your perception of the world, the judgements you make about other people and the beliefs you form about yourself. Daniel will revolutionise the way you think, with transformative applications for how we engage with other communities and approach mental illness. Daniel Yon is an experimental psychologist, cognitive neuroscientist and director of The Uncertainty Lab at Birkbeck, University of London - where he is now Associate Professor in Cognitive Neuroscience. In 2023 he was made a Visiting Fellow of the Paris Institute for Advanced Study and in 2024 he was awarded the Experimental Psychology Society’s EPS Prize for distinguished, independent and original contributions to experimental psychology. Thinking of coming with friends? Why not add to your special night out and enjoy the show in the comfort of a private booth and table ( seats 5). See the ' Book A Booth' option in the ticket sale section. Daniel will also be signing copies of his latest book, ‘A Trick of the Mind’ , which will be available to purchase on the night. This event will take place upstairs in the Nightingale Room at The Grand Central Pub , Brighton. Unfortunately, there is no wheelchair access to the venue. More about Gong and Sound Journeys Everything in the universe is vibration , and also what we perhaps know deep inside, that the cells of our body hum along to the beat of our heart, creating resonance or dissonance with what we have within. Deeply rooted in our bodies and ancestral memory, the rhythms and sounds of ancestral instruments stir an explosion of feelings and emotions, for as longs as there have been humans and before we even had words, we had sounds, music and rhythms present in nature and in our communities. It is in the exploration of these liminal states that we can bring deep healing with our heart intention. Alchemy crystal bowls , infused with elements like mother of pearl and precious elements, offer luminous tones that ripple through the energetic and emotional body. The Earth-frequency tuned gong anchors you in your body and in the moment, while shamanic drumming and shruti box open pathways to stillness and altered states. These live, layered tones invite a return to coherence of body, mind, and soul. No two journeys are the same. You may feel waves of calm, receive a clear insight, or simply rest more deeply than you have in weeks. All experiences are welcome here. Information Source: Heart of Alchemy | eventbrite

ABOUT THE BOOK Bitter Sweet is a thought-provoking exploration of a relationship founded in power, control and silence, perfect for book clubs. It will be published worldwide this July. 'In my life, there are things that have happened to me, and things that I have done, that have proven to be moments that have a clear before and an after. One of those moments, perhaps in some ways the biggest, was the day that I met Richard Aveling for the first time.' Charlie is twenty-three, single and the new publicity assistant at the independent London publishing house Winden & Shane. Richard Aveling is fifty-six, married and the author that has defined his generation. Charlie has long idolised the charming, illustrious writer, who also represents a link to her late mother, who loved his work. But as they embark on an illicit and all-consuming affair, Charlie is forced to hide the relationship from everyone she cares about. And when the success of Richard's latest book launches him to a new level of fame where all anonymity is lost, she realises she might just be in too deep... 'I inhaled this novel. Utterly believable, immersive and heartfelt. I loved it' JENNIE GODFREY 'Hattie's writing on early-20s friendships and their enmeshed intensity, was so convincing. I enjoyed it so much' MARIAN KEYES 'A timeless tragedy, a story of the intricacies and illusions of true love' CHRIS WHITAKER 'Beautifully crafted, with aftershocks of conscience' JODI PICOULT 'Sharp, compelling, and thought provoking. The perfect book club pick for 2025' LOUISE O'NEILL --- www.hattiewilliams.com Information Source: Bison Beach Bar | eventbrite
