Creative writing masterclass: writing crime | Jubilee Library
Jun 15, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Brighton
This masterclass will set you firmly on your way to being a crime writer. Your tutor – a former police chief superintendent and now crime writer – will guide you through the nature of the genre and its sub genre, understanding the world of crime, villainy and policing, then we will get on to the actual writing. We will work through how to develop gripping characters, settings, how to plot, write authentic dialogue, and craft twists, arcs and endings. Come prepared for a blistering day and armed with all the questions you’ve always wanted to ask someone who’s done it for real and now makes it up for fiction. The session will be run by Graham Bartlett. After thirty years of policing, whereby Graham Bartlett became Brighton and Hove police’s chief superintendent, a senior homicide detective and a public order and firearms commander, he is now a best-selling crime fiction and non-fiction author, and police and crime advisor. His debut non-fiction, Death Comes Knocking, written with Peter James, was a Sunday Times Top Ten bestseller, and Peter and Graham followed this up with the critically acclaimed Babes in the Wood. Since then, Graham has had three solo crime novels published; Bad for Good (Sunday Times Top Ten Best Seller, Winner of Crime Fiction Lover Editors’ Choice Award 2022 and Nominated for Specsavers Debut of the Year 2022), Force of Hate, and City on Fire. As a police procedure and crime advisor, Graham works with over 200 authors and TV writers (including Peter James, Elly Griffiths, Anthony Horowitz, Ruth Ware, Mark Billingham and the BBC), helping them inject authenticity into their work. The session will be held at the Jubilee Library in Brighton and will run from 11-5pm with an hour for lunch. The venue is fully accessible, near the train station and bus routes and with plenty of options for lunch (including bringing your own). The workshop is part of a series of one-day masterclasses held in the summer They are open to existing students on the Creative Writing Programme and other writers looking to improve specific areas of their writing craft. Shaping the future of safety in the Uk | Barclays Eagle Labs Brighton
Jun 16, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Brighton and Hove
On June 15th at 6pm, we’re launching the
bobu
Safety Forum, and if you want to be part of shaping the future of safety this is where you need to be.
This is not a “talk about safety” session. it’s a game changer. It’s where YOU get to drive the conversation that will shape the future of safety.
Real safety? It’s inconvenient. It’s uncomfortable. But it’s necessary. The numbers speak for themselves:
• Over 60% of hospitality workers have witnessed sexual harassment in the workplace—and most of it goes unreported. (HOSPA)
• Venues and businesses in the UK lose £1.6 billion a year due to harassment and unsafe environments. (UK Gov)
These aren't just statistics. This is the reality of our industry.
The
bob
u
Safety Forum is where businesses like yours will step up and lead the conversation.
Real safety means doing the work. It means confronting uncomfortable truths. It means leading the way in making sure people are heard, seen and protected.
What to expect at the bobu Safety Forum:
Straight Talk, Not Small Talk
We’re cutting through the noise. Expect raw, honest conversations about what’s
really
happening in venues and businesses right now—and what needs to change. No sugar-coating, no corporate fluff.
Your Voice, Your Power
This isn’t a panel where you sit quietly and listen. This is a forum,
you’re part of the conversation
. Share your experiences, challenges, and ideas. Be seen. Be heard.
Building the Future Together
We’re not here to hand you a manual. We’re here to build a new standard of safety with you. You’ll leave with ideas, momentum and a chance to shape how venues and businesses across the UK move forward.
Connection Time
Meet other businesses and venues who actually give a damn. Build your network with people who are done with ticking boxes and ready to do real work.
Because safety isn’t just a conversation, it’s a revolution.
Complimentary drinks and pizza sponsored by Eagle Labs

Jun 20, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Brighton
Crow- Avanti Display Taking the form of a music concert, the show begins at twilight, with three musicians arriving for a gig. As the light fades, the atmosphere begins to change. An inventive music score is interrupted by ridiculous acts of conjuring, more Tommy Cooper than David Blane. Reality seems to warp. When full darkness falls, sleight of hand and video projection expand this comic and curious world, suggesting ideas both profound and absurd. Avanti Display is one of the UK’s longest established outdoor performance companies creating over twenty original shows. This production features collaborations with a range of artists: music by Seaming To; words by Lou Glanfield (IOU), dramaturgy by Mark Long (People Show), Audio Visual design by Chris Squire (Impossible Arts). The show was conceived by Bill Palmer, developed and performed by the company: Bill Palmer, Chris Squire, Paschale Straiton, Seaming To and Semay Wu. Zoe Mulford Zoe Mulford is rapidly becoming best-known as the writer of The President Sang Amazing Grace, which has been covered by Joan Baez and by Kronos Quartet featuring Meklit. Painting Landscapes with Hester Berry | Draw Brighton
Jun 21, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Brighton and Hove
We welcome the respected landscape painter
Hester Berry
to the studio for an accessible and well-structured class weekend course, focusing on painting landscape in oil paints.
Over the weekend Hester will help you to understand how you might use a sketchbook to support your painting and discuss how you best use colour, light and economical brushwork to develop engaging landscape paintings, working up a complete painting in the studio from reference sketches and photographs. This course is ideal for beginners who want to learn how to approach painting landscapes in oils, as well as more experienced painters who are looking to learn from Hester.
What to Expect
Day 1: Following an introductory talk we will head go outside to draw near to the studio (weather permitting) followed by a discussion of tone and short demonstration. You will then have the opportunity to begin your own painting from your own reference material under Hester’s guidance while Hester works on an ongoing demonstration piece.
Day 2: We will look at colour and mark-making in more depth and you will be able to continue to work on your own paintings, with Hester’s support.
The workshop will run from 10am-5pm, with a 1-hour lunch break - you are welcome to bring a packed lunch, or to pop to the nearby Sainsbury’s, or a café on London Road. There will also be extra tea breaks throughout the day.
What you need to bring
Most materials will be provided, including oil paint, solvent, additional oil painting paper, palettes and palette knives. You will need to bring:
A choice of photos of landscapes to work from (printouts are fine, but a tablet, iPad or phone is often preferable).
A sketchbook
An apron and appropriate clothing to be painting and to be outside for an hour or so: sunhats, sunscreen, waterproofs, depending on weather
Paint brushes, a selection of widths including a ¾" flat/chisel brush, and a smaller flat/chisel brush
3-4 canvases, boards or pieces of oil paper between 9”x12” and 18”x24” in size, primed and prepared with a ground of a solvent-thinned coat of brown oil paint. Hester suggests a mixture of yellow ochre, burnt sienna and French ultramarine; aim for a warm soily/sandy colour.
Rags or kitchen Roll
You will need to take your painting home with you at the end of the course, so please bear that in mind and bring a box or appropriate carrier – paintings can be left at the studio to dry. If you have any questions, please contact
info@draw-brighton.co.uk
Getting to the studio
You may arrive at 9:45am onwards. Approach New England House from the New England Street side of the building and walk up to the locked blue double doors next to the sign for the ‘Building Manager’s Office’. Wait to be let in or call the number on the door for entry - the studio is on level 5, Unit 1 South, just knock and walk in. Know Yourself, Be Yourself, Like Yourself
(Sweet Talk: Wellbeing Workshop 2)
Do you put yourself down? Make jokes at your own expense?
Compare yourself to others? Feel unlovable inside?
Hate having photos taken? Don’t like the sound of your own voice?
This ‘taster’ workshop will focus on helping you get to know yourself, like yourself, and even love yourself.
We’ll focus on learning to be good to
you
, and to think positively about your attributes and qualities.
It’s time to build your self-esteem and confidence, to feel you deserve the good stuff in life. You will come away with practical strategies for kind and positive thinking.
It’s a truism: but it’s hard to love and be loved if you don’t love yourself.
Know Yourself, Be Yourself, Like Yourself
is the second in a series of 3 taster workshops by Corinne Sweet, spread across 2025. Join Corinne through different seasons to tackle various areas of self-love, self-development and growth.

About Maisha Stories Project
From November 2024 to December 2025, we will work with Black, Asian and ethnically diverse people of colour (BPOC) communities based along the South Downs National Park and East Sussex to co-produce and co-deliver a series of 12 monthly storytelling and placemaking workshops in Brighton’s Moulsecoomb, Hastings and Lewes aimed at people of all ages and backgrounds including families.
Project partners are Writing Our Legacy (WOL) and Diversity Lewes and The Rest Experience and working with academic Dr Jess Moriarty. Look out for our updates on how you can get involved if you are living, working or studying in these areas.
The project builds on the Maisha Stories: No Place Like Home project devised in 2024 by Amy Zamarripa Solis (WOL), Tony Kalume (Diversity Lewes) and Dr Jess Moriarty and delivered with Akila Richards founder of The Rest Experience.
The project has delivered a workshop series in Lewes, supported by University of Brighton’s Community – University Partnership Programme and funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), AHRC Impact Account and Arts Council England.
The project has also delivered workshops, in partnership with Sussex Police, funded by IGNITE Acceleration fund and Policy Support Fund.
Why Maisha Stories?
In Swahili, the name Maisha represents the value, diversity, and beauty of life, the profound meaning of life and the energy, power, and essence of being. It is a name celebrated across African societies and more widely that inspires connections between human existence, nature and the whole community of life. It acknowledges these interconnections as precious and vital and should be celebrated.
Project Aims
The project seeks to connect individuals and build new communities. Storytelling, in particular, can be a catalyst for community, enabling people to share their lives and experiences and combating feelings of loneliness. We want to address the inequality of access to the natural environment in the UK.
Writing Our Legacy CIC
is an arts and heritage organisation that enables Black, Asian and ethnically diverse/BPOC* people to tell their story through writing and the creative arts. We were established in 2012.
We give writers and other creatives a platform and community to feel supported, nurtured and evolve their work through the creative pipeline, from start to publication. We share stories and heritage of diaspora communities and bring them to life through various art forms for audiences to learn and take part in cultural heritage. We are an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation.
