KS2 Boccia (Participation) - Inspire competition | Co-op Academy Bebington

Bebington
Sports & Fitness
Join the KS2 Boccia (Participation) - Inspire competition and experience the thrill of competitive sports. This event aims to inspire individual development and build character. The squad size is limited to a maximum of 4, while the team size should consist of 3 players. Open to pupils in Year 3, 4, 5, or 6, this event offers a fantastic opportunity for those who may not enjoy traditional team sports. Please note that participating in the Boccia event will preclude pupils from taking part in the New Age Kurling Competition, which will run concurrently. In Boccia, each team strives to position their balls as close as possible to the target ball (jack), similar to the game of bowls. The referee determines the team placement through a coin toss, with the winning team occupying boxes 1, 3, 5 using red balls, or boxes 2, 4, 6 using blue balls. Players take turns throwing, rolling, or kicking the white Jack from box 1, ensuring it lands within the court and over the 'V' shaped line. Assistive devices, such as ramps, can be used if necessary. The player then proceeds to throw their red ball, aiming to get as close to the white jack as possible. The next player on the opposing team (blue team) follows suit, propelling their first ball. If the blue ball is closer to the target ball than the red ball, the turn passes to the next player from the red team. However, if the blue ball is further away, the player continues with their second ball. If the blue ball is closer to the target than the red ball, the second player from the red team takes their turn. Conversely, if the blue ball is still farther away, the turn passes to the second player from the blue team. The red team only plays again when a blue ball is situated closer to the target or when all the blue balls have been played. After all balls have been played, the score is tallied. Each team receives one point for every ball situated nearer to the white jack than the closest opposing team ball. Additionally, if two or more balls from different teams are positioned at the same distance from the target ball, each team is awarded one point. Any ball that goes out of the court is considered a 'dead ball' and is out of play. Please remember that schools are responsible for their own first aid provision and should ensure they have access to medical and emergency contact details. Get ready for an exhilarating competition at the Co-op Academy Bebington on March 13, 2024. Admission is free, so don't miss out on this opportunity to showcase your skills and sportsmanship.

From the bestselling author of "The Watchmaker of Filigree Street," this queer sci-fi novel follows the journey of a refugee from Earth and a xenophobic Mars politician who enter into a fake marriage to salvage their reputations. In this compelling story, January, a former principal in London's Royal Ballet, finds himself as a refugee on Tharsis, the terraformed colony on Mars, following an environmental catastrophe. As an Earthstronger, January's life on Mars is restricted by his body's inability to adjust to the planet's lower gravity. His choices for employment, housing, and transportation are all governed by this second-class status. However, a xenophobic politician named Aubrey Gale poses an even greater threat to January's future, advocating for the surgical naturalization of all Earthstrongers, a process that is disabling and potentially fatal. When Gale's media encounter with January goes disastrously wrong, both their lives are thrown into chaos. Gale proposes a five-year fake marriage to improve their public image and secure January's future without immediate naturalization. As their relationship develops, January realizes that Gale is not the person portrayed in the press. They are kind, compassionate, and far more difficult to hate than January initially believed. But as their romance blossoms, the political situation worsens, and January discovers that Gale has a dangerous enemy willing to destroy Tharsis. January may be the only one capable of standing in their way. Captain Michael Barritt is a former Hydrographer of the Navy, head of the Royal Navy’s hydrographic profession, and a successor to Captain Thomas Hurd. In Nelson's Pathfinders, he tells the remarkable story of how a handful of intrepid scientific navigators underpinned British naval dominance in the conflict with Napoleon During the Napoleonic Wars, more than twice as many British warships were lost to shipwreck than in battle. The Royal Navy’s fleets had to operate in unfamiliar seas and dangerous coastal waters, where navigational ignorance was as great a threat as enemy guns. If Britain was to win the war, improved intelligence was vital. In this landmark account, Michael Barritt reveals how a cadre of specialist pathfinders led by Captain Thomas Hurd enabled Britain’s Hydrographic Office to meet this need. Sounding amongst hazards on the front line of conflict, alert for breaks in weather or onset of swell, these daring sailors gathered vital strategic data that would eventually secure the upper hand against Britain’s adversaries. Tracing this pathfinding around Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas, Barritt shows how the honing of this skill set revolutionised the British way of war at sea—ultimately securing a lasting naval dominance. A must for all maritime enthusiasts. “Barritt’s research into the extraordinary accomplishments of the young British Hydrographic Service in the wars of 1793–1815 matches their own diligence. A fine account of a vital factor in the defeat of Napoleon.”—Richard Woodman, author of Neptune’s Trident “Michael Barritt is uniquely qualified to unravel and explain the complicated and patient work of British naval surveyors and chart makers. He does so brilliantly, aided by a profusion of minutely-detailed contemporary illustrations.”—Roger Knight, author of Convoys Information Source: Linghams Bookshop | eventbrite
