He focusses on making 3D artwork more accessible and exciting for children, and he has a strong reputation as an innovative and highly skilled workshop facilitator. Darrell originally trained in design and illustration, but working with children reignited his own childhood passion for model making, allowing him to revisit the world of ‘junk sculpture’ and papier maché with the eyes of a designer and teacher. Darrell has provided workshops for countless clients, including many hundreds of schools, museums, theatres, and as a part of large-scale festivals and events. His involvement with projects nationwide has given Darrell the experience of working creatively with children of all ages, and from a wide variety of backgrounds, cultures, and abilities. Most of Darrell’s artwork consists of 3D models, sculptures, and masks, made predominantly from scrap cardboard and other recycled materials. The programme The Creativity in the Classroom – Art CPD for Schools programme is designed for teachers of all stages of experience and expertise and offers a range of practical CPD workshops led by leading art educators. Each CPD workshop will build your art teaching skills, extend your repertoire of art techniques and grow your subject knowledge to apply and use in the classroom. Essentials Series The Essentials Series is designed to develop the core skills, subject knowledge and confidence of primary teachers, primary Art Leads and professionals working in schools, based around the fundamental building blocks needed for teaching art in the primary classroom. The series supports teachers to fulfil the requirements of the national curriculum and responds to the findings of the Ofsted 2023 art and design subject review. Who is this workshop for? Primary teachers. Primary Art Leads. Professionals working in schools. What will this workshop involve? This session will build your skills and confidence in teaching painting with KS1 and KS2 pupils and provide you with starting points for projects that can be easily adapted for your pupils and your curriculum needs. Through the workshop you will build your understanding of the properties of water colour and poster paint and explore how they can be applied. You will grow your knowledge and experience of colour theory, colour mixing and formal art elements such as colour, tone, texture, pattern and form. You will be introduced to art activities inspired by traditional and contemporary artists that will engage pupils and develop their painting skills, their confidence and their ability to discuss and visually analyse using art vocabulary. The workshop will be led by Becky Thompson, Arts Connect’s Education Producer, visual artist and qualified art teacher with 15 years of experience of working in schools. What will I learn on the day? On the day you will: Build your skills and confidence using water colour and poster paint. Learn about and try different painting techniques and tools.
