Thriller Authors Eve Smith and Guy Morpuss in Conversation | Camberley Library
May 20, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Camberley
Join speculative thriller author Eve Smith and crime fiction author Guy Morpuss in conversation about their work, and the experiences and research that inspired it.
About Eve Smith:
Eve Smith writes speculative fiction, mainly about the things that scare her.
In this world of questionable facts and news, she believes storytelling can be a powerful way to engage people in real life issues.
Longlisted for the Guardian's Not the Booker Prize and described by British bookshop chain Waterstones as: "an exciting new voice in crime fiction", Eve's debut novel, The Waiting Rooms, set during an antibiotic resistance crisis, was shortlisted for the Bridport Prize First Novel Award.
It was followed by Off-Target, about a world where genetic engineering of children is routine.
Her third thriller, ONE, set in a climate-ravaged Britain, was longlisted for the Best Novel Award by the British Science Fiction Association.
Her latest novel, THE CURE, explores the catastrophic consequences of the discovery of a cure for ageing which is hijacked by obsessives who will risk anything to cheat death.
Eve's previous job took her to research projects across Asia, Africa and the Americas, and she has an ongoing passion for wild creatures, wild science and far-flung places.
About Guy Morpuss:
Guy practised as a barrister and King’s Counsel in London for thirty years, dealing with cases featuring drug-taking cyclists, dead Formula 1 champions and aspiring cemetery owners. He now writes full-time.
His debut novel,
Five Minds
, is about five people sharing one body, one of whom is trying to murder the others. It was a Financial Times Book of the Year and a Kindle Number 1 Bestseller in Technothrillers and Post-Apocalyptic SF. Translation rights were sold in eight territories.
For his third novel,
A Trial in Three Acts
, he has returned to the law, with a murder trial set in the Old Bailey.
A trial is rather like a play. We wear our costumes. We perform to the audience. And on a good day no-one gets murdered.
Six nights a week the cast of the smash-hit play Daughter of the Revolution performs to a sold-out audience. A thrilling story of forbidden marriage and a secret love child, the critics say it'll run for years. That is until one night the third act ends not in applause but in death, when leading lady Alexandra Dyce is beheaded live on stage.

We meet on the last Wednesday of each month, with either a guest speaker or a BASH network member sharing their expertise

Hastings
Fell and Folk
is a relaxed, intimate evening of folk / acoustic / alternative music, bringing you original music from the songwriters you need to hear about - both local and travelling from farther afield. Each event, host
LAURA FELL
will kick off and close out the evening with a short set, and in between you'll have a 30-minute set each from two guest musicians / acts. Music will wrap up around 10/10.30pm, and drinks will then be available at the bar until 11pm!
Laura Fell's
debut 2020 album,
'Safe From Me',
was released to wide critical acclaim - it was given 8/10 in it's ablum review by Uncut Magazine, and RecordStore.co.uk made it no. 12 of their Top 50 Albums of 2020. After a brief break from music, Fell returned last year with introspective EP
'At Least I Tried',
embariking on an evocative journey through the theme of loss, and has just released her second EP,
'Talk It All Apart',
in May. She is currently working on her next record with Mercury Prize winning producer Mike Lindsay.
Fell’s talent for lyrical craftsmanship permeates every song, inviting listeners to delve beneath the surface to unearth the profound meanings within.
"Fell's rich alto is pure poetry" - Uncut Magazine
"Initmate and immersive ... packed with personal emotion but edged withmystery" - Various Small Flames
" 'Safe From Me' is a truly excellent album, a decptively mature debut from a highly talented artist" - At The Barrier
"Laura Fell is a force to be reckoned with..." - Line of Best Fit
This edition of Fell & Folk we're lucky to have two more incredible guest acts, and both of them local talents!
Hayley Savage
&
WOODPIG
.
Hayley Savage
is a folk singer and guitarist from Hastings. Musically, she blends Americana, traditional folk and indie influences to create songs of storytelling and intimacy combined with experimental flair.
Hayley has been touring her newly released album with her band and will be performing as a trio with Bonj Cranham on guitars and vocals and Lizzie Rafati on vocals.
Americana UK says ‘ Intimate and authentic…
Savage’s album is a testament to patience, honesty, and the power of time in shaping both music and meaning. - This is an album that lingers—not just in melody, but in feeling—long after the final note fades.’
Next up we'll have a full-band set from
WOODPIG.
Evoking a deep sense of change, loss, resilience and personal journey, WOODPIG channel the rustic charm of traditional folk with a contemporary twist. Embodying a unique fusion of acoustic warmth and atmospheric electronics, they craft narratives that resonate in both intimate and expansive sonic landscapes.
Capacity is limited, as is seating, so best to book in advance and to arrive for the start of the event to nab your table of choice, and to give all three acts a lovely audience to play to!
Our venue,
The Hair and Hound,
is perfect for this cozy, intimate setting, and their wonderful bar staff will be serving up standard alcoholic & non-alcoholic drinks as well as cocktails.
Doors open at 7.15pm, music starts at 7.45pm. Music ends at approximately 10pm but the bar will be open until 11pm, so stick around and have a drink with us after!
