Step away from your smartphone and pick up a weapon and shield, as you engage in a unique blend of display combat and martial arts principles. The event provides a safe and inclusive environment for re-enactment combat, which is not only a fun and competitive sport but also an entertaining and theatrical performance for the audience. The aim is to deliver the most captivating displays possible, sharing historical narratives that will both entertain and educate the audience. Blunt reproduction steel weapons are used, combined with martial arts principles such as footwork, balance, movement, timing, and technique. Additionally, dramatic elements like body language, vocalization, and special effects are incorporated to enhance the overall experience. The training sessions are open to participants aged 18 and above (16+ with parental permission). Whether you are a seasoned fighter or new to combat, the sessions cater to various fitness levels and body types. However, individuals with physical health conditions are advised to consult their GP or physical therapist before participating. The sessions kick off with warm-ups, followed by fitness and conditioning exercises, weapons techniques practice, group tactics, and free sparring. The instructors, with their wealth of experience, ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for all. The first session is free, and subsequent sessions cost £3 each or £10 per month. These sessions take place weekly at the same time and location, eliminating the need for repeated sign-ups. Participants are encouraged to bring their own drink bottles, while sensible sports shoes and loose-fitting clothing are recommended. Initially, weapons and protective gloves can be borrowed, and shields are provided after completing basic training. Protective gloves kits can be assembled for £5, and suitable re-enactment weapons can be purchased from the group's blacksmith, Jason Green of Wieland Forge. Viking re-enactment extends beyond combat, with monthly talks and crafting sessions. The group also shares their knowledge and expertise through public displays at events across the UK and beyond. Non-combatants are welcome to attend these events without signing up. On combat training weeks, structured activities are not available, but attendees can enjoy tea, coffee, and engaging conversations in the dedicated non-com room.
