Jo Hann | A Stand Up Comedy Special| Saturday Oct 26 2024 @ The Lemon Stand | The Lemon Stand
Oct 26, 2024 (UTC+8)ENDED
Singapore
Jo Hann is one of those rare humans who has managed to succeed downwards over time. He has gone from breaking respectable stories as a young newshound to commemorating middle age by churning out marketing copy that even ChatGPT finds revoltingly boring. Today, Jo Hann has discovered a new bottom to ply his trade—the world of stand-up comedy. His tragic struggles (most of which is self-inflicted) make up his main comedy routines. Occasionally, he undulls himself and tempts the powers that be by poking fun at the taboo topics of Singapore. The Lemon Stand Comedy Club is also excited to bring 5 additional Comics during each of the headline shows so you can discover more amazing comedians in Singapore! The Lemon Stand provides a full bar of drinks, free popcorn for each table and a food menu of bits and bites which you can find on our website. At The Lemon Stand we do our best to bring together the comedic arts and the community with an entire venue created just for Comedy in Singapore so we hope you come out and enjoy your night with lots of laughs and entertainment! Being Peranakan | National Library - Imagination Room, Level 5
Oct 27, 2024 (UTC+8)ENDED
Singapore
BEING PERANAKAN is the first public event that the Chakap Baba-Nyonya is hosting with Central Arts Library. Our group of dedicated Baba Malay speakers would like to share our attempts to promote the language of our upbringing that is fast diminishing. Over the last three years, we have been reading transcripts of plays in the Baba patois and re-capturing the words and idioms that still fascinate us. We have delved into the lyrics of popular Malay songs and the wit in the Dondang Sayang pantuns at our sessions. Online and in our group chat we dissect the colloquial expressions and phrases that were parlayed across the community. These have brought amusement and learning, making us proud of our unique culture. For this session, we introduce two veterans of the Baba Malay stage – Francis Hogan and Reggie who will re-enact an excerpt of a play that both had acted in. Hogan, 90, will recount the start of his stage career as a cross-dressing Bibik from the 1950s to the present. Hogan writes and sings Dondang Sayang pantuns (verses.) In his many roles, he has been named Bibik Tau Yu or Bibik Lemak. Reggie, in his 40s, plays the domestic maid who adds a humorous touch to Baba Patois, unknowingly distorting it with her Chinese mispronunciations. His other role as a feisty Nyonya, has earned him the moniker Bibik Sambal Belachan, Together, Hogan and Reggie will entertain you to a quintessential Baba stage moment. We invite you to join us Chakap Baba-Nyonya. Expect some singing.

Discover a new perspective on exhibitions with Figuring a Scene, where we break free from traditional art history norms. Emotions, imagination, and sensory experiences take center stage in our understanding of art, defining how we make sense of the world around us.
Explore the process of creating art and the meaning of materials within specific settings, akin to the unfolding of a narrative or drama. As you navigate the exhibition, connect with your own experiences with the artworks on display.
Join us on a journey that encourages a deeper appreciation for the intricate process of art creation. Engage in thought-provoking questions about the production and reception of art, the collective staging of the exhibition scene, and the interconnectedness between artistic forms and the broader realms of history and everyday life.
Figuring a Scene presents different instances where elements from nature become signs that help us perceive and grasp social forms. These instances come via six episodes - shadow, fruit, fire, air, wax, and city.

THE COLLECTOR 1994 | Opera Gallery Singapore
Sep 20–Oct 20, 2024 (UTC+8)ENDED
Singapore
Opera Gallery Singapore is proud to present its 30th anniversary exhibition, ‘The Collector 1994’. This exhibition will showcase a unique selection of masterworks from renowned Impressionist, Modern and Contemporary artists, including Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Joan Miró, Alexander Calder, Pierre Soulages, Zao Wou-Ki, Yayoi Kusama, Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Fernando Botero and Manolo Valdés, to name a few. To commemorate this milestone, the gallery space has been redesigned to recreate the apartment of an art collector in 1994, the year Opera Gallery established its first location in Singapore. ‘The Collector 1994’ transports viewers to the heart of the 1990s by recreating five living spaces of a collector’s home from thirty years ago: an entrance hall, a living room, a dining room, a bedroom, and a library. Opera Gallery is questioning the singular and personal relationship an art collector maintains with his artworks. Their works remain as influential today as they were 30 years ago, reflecting Opera Gallery’s journey over the past three decades—a journey marked by continuous growth and inspiration. The exhibition’s special scenography allows the artworks to be experienced in a more personal and intimate manner. It's a unique opportunity to travel back to 1994 and visit the intimate interior of a collector's home.
