Lin Wushi: Crossing the Rain | Tokyo Gallery + BTAP
May 24–Jun 28, 2025 (UTC+9)ENDED
Tokyo
The charm of Hayashi Takeshi's works lies in the complete context and completion throughout the creative process. His representative works include the installation "Measurement" (1997/Tokyo Gallery) integrated with the white cube space, "Paddy Field-Minami Arima" (2004/Minami Arima Town, Nagasaki Prefecture) composed of mud and stone, "Room Between Stones" (2006/Tokyo Gallery) that can be climbed, and "Stone Language" (2014/Tokyo Gallery + BTAP) that imitates the screen in front of the tea ceremony furnace. The artist continues to expand the possibilities of creation by constantly breaking through the boundaries of sculpture and integrating natural and historical elements into stone performance.
Straddling the Rain: An Exhibition | Tokyo Gallery + BTAP
May 24–Jun 28, 2025 (UTC+9)ENDED
Tokyo
Tokyo Gallery + BTAP presents Straddling the Rain, Takeshi Hayashi’s sixth solo exhibition at the gallery, opening May 24. A renowned sculptor born in 1956 in Gifu Prefecture, Hayashi blends natural materials and historical motifs to expand the boundaries of stone sculpture. This exhibition explores the theme of rain, which the artist associates with time, memory, and transient emotion. Featuring abstract installations using stone and water chestnuts, the works evoke dynamic spatial relationships and ethereal sensations. Now retired from teaching at Tokyo University of the Arts, Hayashi continues to create in Shirakawa, Gifu, inviting viewers into quiet reflection through his evolving practice.

He honed his craft for joke writing in the London comedy circuit where he lived until 2020. In that same year, he left the bubble of UK politics and instead opted to live his life on the road and tour his self-produced shows all over the European continent. Since then, Victor has travelled to corners of the world, of which some he has been the first comedian to perform in English. He has told jokes in Germany, Netherlands, Austria, Turkey, Sweden, France, Serbia, Switzerland, Finland, Belgium, Iceland, Italy, Spain, Ireland, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Gibraltar, Norway, Slovakia, Slovenia, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Armenia, Croatia, Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, United Arab Emirates, Bulgaria, Hungary, Ukraine and even Denmark. In 2023 alone, Victor performed in front of more than 20’000 people across 70 cities, 32 countries and 2 continents. Consequently, he has a legitimate claim for having the longest and most extensive self-produced comedy show in Europe. Victor weaves this unique experience into his stand up as he has become somewhat of a sponge absorbing the intricacies of European culture and politics. His style is distinctly shaped by his peculiar life as a vagabond. While he jokes about the stereotypes and misconceptions of every country, he also highlights the silliness of our presumed differences in an effort to assert our sameness. Victor is now on tour • for more information • victorpatrascan.com
