Derek Warfield & the Young Wolfe Tones Concert at Trad Fest West | United Irish Cultural Center

Jun 13, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
San Francisco
Musical
Arts
The Young Wolfe Tones return to the UICC stage as part of our Trad Fest West weekend of music and Irish arts—and both the band and the UICC are marking 50 years! A special group of Irish men and women have been responsible for preservation of the tradition of Irish ballad singing over the past 50 years. Derek Warfield is a distinguished name among them. Derek Warfield and They Young Wolfe Tones are bringing that musical tradition forward with a reverence for Ireland’s past and the energy and optimism of a new generation of Irish musicians. Derek Warfield & The Young Wolfe Tones are thrilled to be celebrating 14 years On the One Road and are delighted to be celebrating it in style with the release of a new CD/Vinyl “Let The Free Birds Fly” released in June 2022, and performances all over America including some great Irish American Festivals & Venues. Please check www.theyoungwolfetones.com for all of our latest tour dates. “We’re presenting an old tradition in a new package – and I’ve the same passion for it now as I had when it all started 50 years ago!” Derek Warfield & The Young Wolfe Tones (One of the headlining acts of Milwaukee Irish Festival 2018 (The biggest Irish Festival in the world) Derek Warfield (New York Society Dublin Man of The Year 2013) and (The AOH Spirit Of Freedom Award 2017) Derek Warfield & The Young Wolfe Tones (Official performers for ‘2015 The Friends Of Ireland Speaker John Beohner St Patrick’s Day Luncheon in Capitol Hill) for President Obama, Vice President Biden, Taoiseach Enda Kenny & many other distinguished friends of Irish America. 2016 Was a pinnacle for Derek and The Young Wolfe Tones was when they were chosen to perform on the 24th April at the 1916 centenary commemorations at the General Post Office in O’Connell Street Dublin at 12 o’clock noon. This was the exact same time the Irish proclamation was read by Padraig Pearse one hundred years ago to the minute. As Derek is quoted as saying “of all the honors bestowed on the Wolfe Tones old and young this privilege was the most significant. It was an honor to perform the music and songs of remembrance and the patriotic ballads that were sung by the volunteers inside the building during the struggle for our freedom, and we performed them with the same passion and emotion. “The Foggy Dew”, “Wrap the Green Flag Round me” “The Soldiers Song” were some of the chorus’s that rang out along the main thoroughfare to the 30,000 people assembled. Derek Warfield & The Young Wolfe Tones produced a powerful 20 track CD commemorative 1916 CD titled “The Call of Erin” that embraces the heritage of popular ballads that remember our hero’s and patriots in poem, song and music. After spending nearly 40 years as founder, leader and front man of the legendary Wolfe Tones (named after the 18th century Irish Revolutionary Theobald Wolfe Tone), Derek Warfield is revered as a singer, songwriter, historian and entertainer in all parts of the world where Irish roots have been put down. The Wolfe Tones enjoyed phenomenal success with 13 best-selling albums, 3 number one hits, many television appearances and shows in esteemed venues such as New York’s Carnegie Hall and The Royal Albert Hall in London. Derek has been proudly presented with the keys to San Francisco, New York and Los Angeles for his contributions to Irish Song & Music over the years and was honored as “Dublin Gael of The Year 2013” by the New York Dublin Society. Since breaking away from the Wolfe Tones in 2001, Derek’s solo career has yielded 12 albums to date, the most successful of them being “A Nation once again” “On the One Road”, “God save Ireland” “Sons of Erin” ‘The Bonnie Blue Flag” “Washington’s Irish” “Let Ye All be Irish Tonight”, “Call of Erin” and “Let the Free Birds Fly”. With the formation and ongoing success of The Young Wolfe Tones, the legend of Derek Warfield continues. LEGACY – THE YOUNG WOLFE TONES In 2001, after nearly 40 years performing, the legendary Wolfe Tones parted with their founder and leader – Derek Warfield. No other Irish folk group, before or since, told the story of Ireland so completely and unapologetically. But for Derek’s hunger and desire to continue to further the story of Ireland through song, an ancient tradition might have lost perhaps its most iconic figure. In 2008 Derek put together a band containing some of the finest musicians and singers in Irish music – The Young Wolfe Tones. For more information about the band, see https://www.theyoungwolfetones.com/ For more information about the Irish Center in SF, see https://irishcentersf.org/ The video above represents the spirit in the St. Patrick's Room @ Irish Center SF when Derek Warfiled & the Young Wolfe Tones take the stage (from 2019 show) Damaris Woods - Banjo Damaris Woods from Co. Annually, Andreas has featured on the Cruise of Irish Stars where he gets the chance to share the stage with Ronan Tynan, Andy Cooney and many more. Andreas has performed on many Irish television shows including Glór Tire on TG4 and Open House on RTÉ. Eddie Kane – Vocals – Guitar Eddie Kane is an accomplished singer and musician from Allenwood in Co. Kildare. Eddie inherited his musical talents from his parents as his mother played in a traditional Irish music band with all her siblings, when she was a young age and his father is known to sing an odd song or two. His biggest influences are Christy Moore, Andy Irvine, Planxty, The Wolfe Tones & Dervish to name but a few, and in recent years he has been honoured to perform with some of these acts on stage. In the last few years, he has performed with many groups and singers such as the Rising Sons, Paddy Mangan, Meadbh Walsh and of course with Derek Warfield & The Young Wolfe Tones. With his exciting stage presence, love of all things Irish, love of history and enthusiasm, Eddie will bring a new excitement and flare into the band for audiences all over the world. Paddy McGrandles – Flute – Vocals Paddy McGrandles hails from North Belfast and is no stranger to the Irish Traditional Music Scene. He began his musical journey at age 11 in secondary school He began his musical journey at age 11 in secondary school, starting with the tin whistle. By 16, he transitioned to the wooden flute and impressively achieved his LCM Grade 8 with distinction within a year. Paddy pursued music studies at the Magee Campus of Ulster University. His career took off as he performed with various Irish dance shows, notably "Women of Ireland," where he toured the US, including a memorable St. Patrick’s Day performance in Chicago and shows throughout Texas, Arkansas, and Florida. Paddy later joined "Rhythm of the Dance," allowing him to tour the US and Canada and perform at prestigious venues, such as Crocus City Hall and RTE Studios in Dublin for a St. Patrick's Day recording of the Late Late Show. As a member of the popular band All Folk'd Up, Paddy played at major music festivals across Ireland and the UK, as well as events like the Cheltenham races and RiRa in Las Vegas. Derek Warfield Derek Warfield’s 60 years of experience coupled with the talent and energy of The Young Wolfe Tones brings the old tradition of Irish balladry into a new age. The story of Ireland is transmitted in their music and song and illuminated by the outstanding musicianship of three wonderful ambassadors of a new generation of traditional players. Derek Warfield and The Young Wolfe Tones deliver Ireland’s traditional music and folk songs with an energy and skill that shows the quality of contemporaries within that tradition. The patriotic spirit of Irish music carried through the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s by the Wolfe Tones now marches on in the dynamic sound of The Young Wolfe Tones. Jun 21, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
San Francisco
Cultural Experiences
Date Change Due to unique circumstances, the date of this Cuddle Party moved to June 21st. The date was previously June 7th. Here's some information on what Cuddle Parties are: What is a Cuddle Party? Cuddle Party is a 3-4 hours workshop experience where participants engage in communication exercises, explore touch in a non-sexual space, experience personal exploration and intimacy, and have fun with like minded people. What do we do at a Cuddle Party? We do two main things at Cuddle Parties: 1. Enjoy each other's touch. You can come and enjoy giving and receiving caring touch from other people who want to give and receive it. 2. Practice Consent. A major part of Cuddle Parties is learning how to ask for what you want and how to answer requests. Worried? Confused? Don't fret - we will teach, guide and help you practice how to do it. Why is Cuddling important? Nurturing and consensual loving touch is good for maintaining a healthy life, a strong nervous system and a balanced emotional state for people of all walks of life. One’s ability to connect with and develop greater trust in others is emphasized during the group exchanges during Cuddle Parties. Self-care is a cornerstone of the Cuddle Party experience. Is this SEX?! Great question! No. This is a non-sexual event. You have the option of experiencing touch and maybe intimacy if you'd like to - but we steer away from sexual behavior. If you are looking for something sexy, we're all for it! :) just not in this event. You can find more info about Cuddle Parties after the logistical information below. Some Frequently Asked Questions regarding COVID-19: This is a fully Vaccinated and Boosted Cuddle Party This event is for vaccinated and boosted participants - please go over all the details below, as some things have changed, and see whether this event is for you. Will EVERYONE be fully vaccinated? YES! This is a boundary that is put on participating in the event, for everyone's safety. All participants must have received at least one booster. I have not been fully vaccinated yet, but I have a negative COVID-19 test. May I join? While we appreciate that this would mean you are a lower risk, I'm afraid that at the moment we cannot admit you to the event. Thank you for your patience and kindness for letting others who really need this be able to participate. SOME IMPORTANT NOTES: LOCATION: HeartLab, San Francisco. 3095 21st St, San Francisco, CA 94110, USA. The venue has three steps with handrails at the entrance, but is otherwise wheelchair accessible. More details will be given with your ticket. TICKETS: $40 for single admission or $70 per two people. CANCELLATION: Tickets are non-refundable. We Could All Use a Hug | Yoni Alkan | TEDxSoMa https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EP74acIVs60 SOME MORE INFO ABOUT CUDDLE PARTIES: The Live Greater Series : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-WwqwyGUlk Cuddle Party is a formal, non-sexual event that offers participants an opportunity to explore intimacy with like-minded others, in a relaxed environment, that upholds personal boundaries and maintains a professional atmosphere, at all times. People are encouraged to engage in communication and touch, in a non-threatening, share-affirming environment. Cuddle Party is a holistic, social environment, that attracts fascinating people from all walks of life. It provides a special and unique opportunity for connection, learning and growth.  Cuddle Party experiences teach participants that they alone (with the staff's assistance) create their own safety container. How does it change people's lives? Many of us have a hard time saying NO to requests, and saying no might make us feel afraid that we will hurt the other person. Very rarely do we get a chance to practice saying NO, or practice getting a NO in a safe and nurturing environment. But it's not all about the NO, it's also about the YES! We practice saying YES to one another, and asking for what we want, and changing our minds - all very important skills that we don't put an emphasis on in our everyday lives. It's transformative for people! For more information go to  https://cuddleparty.com/faq/  If you have any other questions feel free to contact us at  info@sfcuddles.com   Come meet open and fun loving people and cuddle with us! HOW IT WORKS: – Upon arrival, you’ll take a matching questionnaire built by Matchbox’s team of relationship scientists. – The Matchbox algorithm will identify your optimal match at the party, based on relationship science, AI, and Nobel Prize-winning economics. – After mingling with the whole group, matches are revealed (3 rounds of matches) WHO IT’S FOR: – The matching process is highly intentional—come with an open mind! – If your match isn’t love at first sight, that’s okay! The algorithm is designed for long-term compatibility, so at baseline, you’ll be values-aligned. – At the end of the day, this will be a great group of single people. Enjoy meeting everyone, and remember to be kind. EVENT STRUCTURE: – This event is highly intentional and the matching will proceed on schedule. Please be on time. – 7:00pm—the event begins on time – 7:30pm—doors close, group match - 8:00pm - first match – 8:20pm—second match – 8:40pm—third match – 9:00pm—event concludes LOCATION: The Harlequin , 68 4th St, San Francisco, CA 94103. Conveniently located near BART and MUNI. Paid parking available at giant Fifth & Mission Garage. **FAQs:** **Q: What is your refund policy?** A: We need to balance the party, and that involves planning! So no refunds can be granted within 5 days of the event. **Q: What if I don’t get a match?** A: We aim to maintain a 50/50 male to female ratio but cannot guarantee that all attendees will show up, as life happens. If there is an uneven split, some matches will be paired platonically. But we hope you might make new friends. **Q: How many interactions can I expect??** A: Maximize your chances of connection! We highly encourage you to mingle with fellow participants before and after the structured activities. During the event, you'll first connect with others in a small group based on your shared interests, followed by personalized one-on-one connections. Literary Arts
Join us at Books Inc. in the Marina in welcoming debut author Robert P. Baird to the shop for a celebration of his new novel The Nimbus! Robert will be in conversation with The Language of Flowers author Vanessa Diffenbaugh! An exhilarating debut novel about a child whose literal enlightenment sets the stage for an exuberant tragicomedy of marriage, religion, and parenthood. On an otherwise ordinary fall day on a university campus in Chicago, the toddler son of an ambitious divinity school professor named Adrian Bennett mysteriously starts to glow. The nimbus, as the strange, soft light comes to be known, offers no clues to its origin and frustrates every attempt at rational explanation. Though the nimbus appears only intermittently, and not to everyone, the otherworldly glow quickly upends the lives of all those who encounter it, including Paul Harkin, Adrian’s broke and feckless graduate student, who likes being a graduate student a little too much for his own good; Renata Bennett, Adrian’s omnicompetent wife, who can’t see her son glowing even though the nimbus is turning her life upside down; and Warren Kayita, a down-on-his-luck librarian and aging div school alumnus on the run from a violent criminal. As news about the nimbus spreads around the university and beyond, Adrian, Paul, Renata, and Warren are set on a collision course that will threaten their lives and put their deepest convictions to the test. At once a rollicking intellectual satire, a searing portrait of a family in crisis, and a thrilling metaphysical page-turner, The Nimbus offers a comic and profound examination of the persistence of spiritual belief in a secular age and humanity’s timeless search for meaning. Robert P. Baird holds a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago Divinity School, and has worked as an editor at The New Yorker, Harper’s Magazine, The Paris Review, Esquire, and Chicago Review. He has written for all those publications, as well as for The New York Times, The London Review of Books, The Guardian, and Poetry, among others. His work can be found at www.robertpbaird.com. Vanessa Diffenbaughis the author of the New York Times bestselling novel The Language of Flowers, which was translated into more than forty languages. A mother of four, she lives with her husband in Monterey, California. In addition to being a writer, Vanessa Diffenbaugh is a passionate foster care advocate and sits on the board of Youth Villages, where she supports their mission to radically improve outcomes for America’s most vulnerable children and families. Co-presented with KALW A magisterial new history of the role of the Supreme Court as an ally in implementing and preserving a racial caste system in America, Brando Simeo Starkey ’s Their Accomplices Wore Robes takes readers from the Civil War era to the present and describes how the Supreme Court aligned with enemies of Black progress to undermine the promise of the Constitution’s Reconstruction Amendments: to abolish slavery, establish equal protection under the law, and protect voting rights. Time and again, when petitioned to make the nation’s founding conceit—that all men are created equal—real for Black Americans, the nine black robes have chosen white supremacy over racial fairness. Their Accomplices Wore Robes brings to life dozens of cases and their rich casts of characters—petitioners, attorneys, justices—to explain how America arrived at this point and how society might arrive somewhere better, even as today’s federal courts lurch rightward. In conversation with KALW’s Sunni Khalid . FREE, $5-10 suggested donation Brando Simeo Starkey is a writer and scholar. A graduate of Harvard Law School and a member of the New York Bar, he taught law at Villanova Law School and wrote for several years for ESPN’s The Undefeated (now Andscape). He launched a newsletter, The Braveverse, about law, politics, and freedom from caste, at the TheBraveverse.com, in January 2025. Sunni M. Khalid is a veteran of more than 40 years in journalism, having worked in print, radio, television, and web journalism. During his career, Sunni has reported from more than 35 countries in Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and the Caribbean on a number of breaking international stories. These include Operation Restore Hope in Somalia, the U.S. military intervention in Haiti, Israel’s Operation Grapes of Wrath in Lebanon and South Africa’s historic, first all-race elections in 1994. He attended Howard University in Washington D.C. and graduated cum laude, majoring in print journalism. He also studied at the Johns Hopkins University’s Nitze School for Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in Washington D.C., majoring in African studies and international economics.
