Celebrating the 2025 Poetry Contest Finalists with Little Patuxent Review | Enoch Pratt Free Library
Jul 12, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
Baltimore
In celebration of the finalists of the 2025 Poetry Contest with the Enoch Pratt Free Library and Little Patuxent Review, join us for readings by finalists Greg Sevik, Marna Williams, Adriana Beltrano, and Jeremy Cox. Little Patuxent Review lead editor Sarah Berger will host. Greg Sevik, co-winner of the 2025 Poetry Contest, is a poet, translator, and English professor at the Community College of Baltimore County. His poems and translations have been published in Avalon Literary Review, Ekphrastic Review, Inventory, Iron Horse, Vagabond City, and elsewhere. He earned his PhD in comparative literature from Binghamton University (SUNY) and served as a Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant in Vreden, Germany. He lives in Baltimore, where he is working on his first book. Marna Williams, co-winner of the 2025 Poetry Contest, lives in North Potomac, Maryland, and is an immunobiologist with 20 years’ experience in the biopharmaceutical industry, designing and developing novel immunotherapies for cancer and autoimmune disease. While she chose science for a profession, storytelling and poetry are in her blood, for she grew up in the Deep South where everything of significance has a story attached to it. She enjoys reading and writing poetry as a counterbalance to complement medical science. Poetry offers a sanctuary, a place to rest while the world keeps spinning.
Adriana Beltrano, a runner-up in the 2025 Poetry Contest, is a poet from Jupiter, Florida. She was named a 2024-25 Jake Adam York Prize finalist and is pursuing her MFA in poetry at Johns Hopkins University, where she is a managing editor of The Hopkins Review. Her work has been supported by the 2024 Sewanee Writers' Conference and is forthcoming in the South Carolina Review and Susurrus. Jeremy Cox, a runner-up in the 2025 Poetry Contest, knew from a young age that he had a knack for writing. But since he wanted to earn a living at it, he majored in journalism and only minored in English (with a concentration in poetry writing) at the University of Florida. Little did he know then that it probably would have involved a lot less heartache if he had done it the other way around. He still makes his paycheck from journalism as a reporter for the Chesapeake Bay Journal, a nonprofit paper that exclusively covers environmental issues. He also teaches media writing and environmental science as an adjunct at Salisbury University. He lives with his wife and teenage daughter on the Eastern Shore, where he loves to run and ply slow-moving rivers aboard a cheap kayak. Sarah Berger, a 2025 Poetry Contest judge, is a classical singer, writer, and artist and has been the lead editor of Little Patuxent Review since 2023. She’s a graduate of Oberlin College and the Peabody Conservatory, and she recently completed an MFA in creative writing and publishing arts at the University of Baltimore, where she has taught in the undergraduate writing program. Links to Sarah’s published writing, music, and other projects can be found at sarahbergersoprano.com and orangesloth.com. Jul 14, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Baltimore
Are you considering how to serve your community, and planning to start a nonprofit?
Or have you already organized a group but feel unsure that the organization is really functioning properly?
Who should register?
All are welcome though this workshop is designed for:
• Community leaders who are currently members of – or plan to start – a small nonprofit organization.

In times like these, it is important to make sure your organization has a solid foundation.
Take the time now to build your internal capacity: create or review your bylaws; reflect on your conflicts of interest policy; consider how you are making decisions remotely; make sure you are up-to-date with state and federal filings; and think about whether it is the right time to apply for 501(c)(3) status.
Whether your organization is new or it has existed for a while, this course contains all the information you need to know to keep it legally compliant.

The cost for one person to attend the workshop is $75. Additional attendees from the same organization may sign up for a discounted rate! The cost for two (2) participants from the same organization is $100.

Amy Yontef-McGrath is Community Law Center’s Pro Bono Program Coordinator. July - Genre Fiction Book Club - Station Eleven | Snug Books
Jul 15, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
Baltimore
Station Eleven, is a finalist for the National Book Award and named a Best Book of the Twenty-First Century by theNew York Times.
AKirkus ReviewsBest Fiction Book of the Century
An audacious, darkly glittering novel set in the eerie days following civilization's collapse, Station Eleven tells the spellbinding story of a nomadic group of actors roaming the scattered outposts of the Great Lakes region, risking everything for art and humanity.
It is fifteen years after a flu pandemic wiped out most of the world's population. Kirsten is an actress with the Traveling Symphony, a small troupe moving over the gutted landscape, performing Shakespeare and music for scattered communities of survivors. But when they arrive in the outpost of St. Deborah by the Water, they encounter a violent prophet who digs graves for anyone who dares to leave. Spanning decades, moving back and forth in time, and vividly depicting life before and after the disaster brought everyone here, this suspenseful, elegiac novel is rife with beauty, telling a story about the relationships that sustain us.

Board Game Speed Dating - Guilford Hall Brewery - Baltimore - (Ages 25-39) | Guilford Hall Brewery
Jul 16, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Baltimore
Searching for a partner can be horrifically painful. But board games are always awesome. So what if you combined board games and finding a partner?
Picture this: You sit down for a night of games. A gaming concierge walks you through several games over the course of the night. You play classics you love and discover brand new games you've never heard of, playing each with a different group of fun singles. All while in a great establishment with plenty of delicious options on tap. At the end of the night, you give your gaming concierge a list of the folks you met that you'd like to date and a list of those you met that you'd like to just hang out with as friends. If any two people put down the same name as each other in either column, then your gaming concierge will make sure you get each other's e-mail address and you can coordinate a time to hang out.
Best case scenario: You find true love, discover some awesome board games, and make some new friends.
Bad case scenario: You accomplish only one of those three things, which is still pretty great.
Worst case scenario: There will be alcohol.
Before you decide to buy tickets, a few basics we should cover:
1) This event is for men & women, ages 25-39, we're hoping to add events to serve even more people in the future! Head over to
https://www.quirkevents.com/maryland
to see what else we have to offer. (If you scroll all the way to the bottom of the page, you'll be able to join our mailing list and get notified about future events.
Plus, joining our mailing list gets you 50% off your first ticket purchase!)
2) To stay up-to-date on everything we have going on at Quirk Events, follow us on Instagram
here!
3) Refunds are only available to those who cancel with more than 48 hours' notice, in order to make sure we have enough time to find a replacement for you and keep the event well-populated. (Exceptions will be made for emergency situations on a case-by-case basis). After that, we're blowing the money from your ticket sale on something awesome and nonrefundable.
4) If we get to 24 hours before the event and still haven't sold five tickets for each gender, we will cancel the event (and notify you). When we have run this event in the past, tickets have consistently sold very well, so we don't expect this to happen. But we thought we should cover this in case it came up.
5) How many games we have and which ones we use will be based in part on how many people attend, so we can't tell you for sure what we'll have right now. But the goal is for all of them to be fun, light, easy-to-learn games. Selection will include games from both the something-you-have-played-before category and the something-you-haven't-played-before category. The games are also chosen because they often tend to spark conversation and leave room for chatting with new people as you play. All games will be group games, meaning you'll get a chance to meet a handful of people with each new round.

About your Hosts:
Katie Overbey (she/her)
began her improv journey in 2018 under the guise of professional development as part of a class in grad school. She fell in love with the way improv could turn a group of science nerds into funny, cohesive performers and she's been hooked ever since. Katie has performed with various groups, including Babeprov in Baltimore and Game Knights at The Armory in NYC. She considers Highwire Improv her home base and when she's not doing improv, she's working as a food ingredient regulator, knitting, or snuggling her pets.
Misty Letts (she/they)
stepped into the improv pool 6 years ago and has not looked back. She got her footing at Baltimore Improv Group through curriculum and workshops from various BIG instructors of the form. Digging into opportunities to learn from so much talent including Don Fanelli (UCB), Kate Zelensky (UCB), and Travis Charles Ploeger (iMusical- WIT). She has also enjoyed playing with Maryland Improv Collective and can presently be found camped out on Highwire’s front stoop. Misty she’s and is also a they/them and can be found on two wheels tooling about town, so drive carefully!
“Improv helps the world laugh, and listen” -Misty
Jenny Kessler (she/her)
has been practicing, performing, coaching, and facilitating improv since 2018. She is a brand strategist by day and a comedy goblin by night. She loves helping others experience the magic of play through improv, doing watercolor paintings when she travels, and exploring the DMV food scene. She’s known for using big emotions on and off stage, and has experience with the Harold, Deconstruction, La Ronde, Montage, and Musical improv.
Barry Wright (he/him)
is your dockside host and operations manager. Barry is an improviser, teacher, and technology professional. He is a co-founder of Highwire Improv and currently serves as President of the Board. He has trained in improv since 2017, including at Baltimore Improv Group, Hoopla Impro, and numerous online workshops.
