Nature Nurture: SELCIE Symposium | 1.06 Project Room, 50 George Square

Jun 6, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Edinburgh
Arts
Literary Arts
About the eventThis free, half-day symposium grows out of the ‘Nurture through Nature with Children’s Books’ exhibition, created by Edinburgh’s Museum of Childhood (Museums & Galleries Edinburgh) in partnership with SELCIE at the University of Edinburgh. This event explores the connection between children’s books, nature, and well-being, exploring how literature can nurture young readers’ creativity and learning, wonder and curiosity, all in relation to the natural world. Reflecting the different yet intertwined threads of the exhibition, this symposium is designed to appeal to scholars of Scottish and children’s literature, literature and environmental humanities, as well as a general public audience interested in the city’s cultural and green heritage. The keynote lecture by the architectural historian, Dr Elizabeth Darling, places the early 20th century Edinburgh kindergarten movement (founded by women) at the heart of the symposium’s exploration of the relationship between care, culture, and female agency in late 19th and early 20th century Scotland. Talks in the first half of the afternoon are dedicated to the kindergarten movement and women’s pioneering role in social reform, education, and child welfare through the use of green space, and the inheritance of Froebelian principles that championed the idea of learning through nature. The second half of the afternoon widens the focus to explore the theme of nature-nurture in Scottish literature, with talks on nature writing for children, and on the idea and practice of care in women’s writing of the period. There will also be an introduction to the ‘Nurture through Nature with Children’s Books’ exhibition, and the children’s book collection of Edinburgh’s Museum of Childhood which inspired it. The speakers featured at this event will be: Elizabeth Darling (Freelance Architectural Historian)Jane Whinnett (Froebel Trust)Lyn Stevens (Edinburgh Museum of Childhood)Lois Burke (Tilburg University)Ainsley MacIntosh (Glasgow University) Information Source: School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures | eventbrite

Building and managing relationships is a skill like any other; it can be learned, developed and fine-tuned. On this programme you will discover an approach that will help you to be faster, more productive, more influential and more at ease in your dealings with others, both with colleagues within your function and with stakeholders outside the organisation. Interactifs’ original and proprietary approach (the Interactifs Discipline©) equips people at all levels and functions with a simple set of verbal behaviours which enables them to increase the impact, influence and effectiveness they have in all of their meetings and conversations. What are the benefits? This will improve your social intelligence – your ability to deal comfortably and effectively with others, when collaborating with them, negotiating with them or managing upwards or downwards. Everyone whose job involves talking to or interacting with other people will benefit from this programme. The skills you learn will allow you to broach difficult topics with greater ease and confidence, focus on future solutions rather than on past problems, remove ambiguity from conversations and ensure absolute clarity and understanding. When you talk - you'll make it count. What skills will you develop? An increased capacity for impacting and influencing any situation An ability to increase significantly the productivity of one-on-one or group meetings More constructive and comfortable ways of broaching sensitive subjects and having difficult conversations An increased capacity for getting things done fast and efficiently Enhanced negotiating skills - the capacity to defend a position whilst preserving the relationship with the other person Enhanced listening skills - the ability to listen acutely and react 'in the moment' in productive, useful ways An increased ability to create the high levels of trust and esteem - respect and self-respect What's included? This programme consists of 2 days then 2 individual 1:1 coaching calls to practise and anchor the learnings from the initial group session. The programme is CPD accredited. Who do you work with? The first stage of the course will be run by trainer - Sarah Hanson The individual follow-up coaching sessions will be delivered by a second trainer, Ele Osborn, within 2-3 weeks. This version of the programme has the same content as the programmes we deliver to large corporations and business schools across the world. Information Source: Interactifs UK | eventbrite
