Miramar Yacht Club Discover Sailing Class | Miramar Yacht Club
Jun 7, 2025 (UTC-4)
Brooklyn
Sailing is a unique sport that offers many benefits. People of all ages can enjoy it, providing equal opportunities to both men and women, regardless of race or social status. Sailing offers a sense of challenge, satisfaction, and excitement, along with a feeling of freedom and independence that can become addicting. Once someone catches the "sailing bug," they rarely lose interest in the sport.
Our club has a tradition of hosting one-day sailing lessons for those who have never sailed. Many people view sailing as something dangerous, expensive, and challenging to learn or access. However, our club in Brooklyn welcomes everyone to come and learn how to sail and enjoy this beautiful sport. Don't just dream about sailing; make it a reality by spending a day with other sailing enthusiasts like yourself. At the end of the class, you will be invited to join us as guests for our special "Seek&Sail" event.
Our sailing class is a five-hour session that includes lunch and starts at 10 AM. During the course, we focus on hands-on learning and provide practical skills to prepare you for a lifetime of sailing. We cover topics such as nautical terminology, sailing theory, water safety, knots, rigging a sailboat properly, basic sailboat maneuvers, points of sail, sail trim, and more.
On the "Seek and Sail" day, you can put everything you learned in class into practice. You will be at the helm and control the boat as you go through all the fundamental maneuvers.

From Melissa Febos, the national bestselling author of
Girlhood,
comes an examination of the solitude, freedoms, and feminist heroes she discovered during a year of celibacy and a wise and transformative look at relationships and self-knowledge.
In the wake of a catastrophic two-year relationship, Melissa Febos decided to take a break: For three months she would abstain from dating, relationships, and sex. Her friends were amused. Did she really think three months was a long time? But to Febos, it was. Ever since her teens, she had been in one relationship after another. As she puts it, she could trace a “daisy chain of romances” from her adolescence to her midthirties. Finally, she would carve out time to focus on herself and examine the patterns that had produced her midlife disaster. Over those first few months, she gleaned insights into her past and awoke to the joys of being single. She decided to extend her celibacy, not knowing it would become the most fulfilling and sensual year of her life. No longer defined by her romantic pursuits, she learned to relish the delights of solitude, the thrill of living on her own terms, the distinct pleasures unmediated by lovers, and the freedom to pursue her ideals without distraction or guilt. Bringing her own experiences into conversation with those of women throughout history—from eleventh-century mystic Hildegard von Bingen, Virginia Woolf, and Octavia Butler to the Shakers and Sappho—Febos situates her story within a newfound lineage of role models who unapologetically pursued their ambitions and ideals.
By abstaining from all forms of romantic entanglement, Febos began to see her life and her self-worth in a radical, new way. Her year of divestment transformed her relationships with friends and peers, her spirituality, her creative practice, and, most of all, her relationship to herself. Blending intimate personal narrative and incisive cultural criticism,
The Dry Season
tells a story that’s as much about celibacy as its inverse: pleasure, desire, fulfillment. Infused with fearless honesty and keen intellect, it’s the memoir of a woman learning to live at the center of her own story, and a much-needed catalyst for a new conversation around sex and love.
Melissa Febos
is the national bestselling author of four books, including
Girlhood
—which won the National Book Critics Circle Award in Criticism, and
Body Work: The Radical Power of Personal Narrative
. She has been awarded prizes and fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, LAMBDA Literary, the National Endowment for the Arts, the British Library, the Black Mountain Institute, the Bogliasco Foundation, and others. Her work has appeared in
The Paris Review, The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, The Best American Essays, Vogue, The Sewanee Review, New York Review of Books,
and elsewhere. Febos is a full professor at the University of Iowa and lives in Iowa City with her wife, the poet Donika Kelly.
Leslie Jamison
is the author of the
New York Times
bestsellers
Splinters
,
The Recovering
, and
The Empathy Exams
; as well as the essay collection
Make It Scream
,
Make It Burn
, a finalist for the PEN/Diamonstein-Spielvogel Award, and the novel
The Gin Closet
, a finalist for the
LA Times Book Prize
. She writes regularly for
The New Yorker
and her work has appeared in many publications including
The New York Times,
the
Virginia Quarterly Review
, and the
New York Review of Books
. She teaches at Columbia University and lives in Brooklyn.

Jun 10, 2025 (UTC-4)
Brooklyn
Join friends, peers, and design leaders at Van Alen Institute's annual Bond Street Bash! Celebrate the collaborations, connections, and community that make our network so extraordinary.
We'll raise a glass to four incredible changemakers pushing the boundaries of inclusive design through bold innovation. Through their design practices, thought leadership, and advocacy, our Bond Street Bash 2025 Honorees are creating more vibrant public spaces in New York City and beyond:
Hana Kassem, Principal, KPF
Mark Gardner, Principal, Jaklitsch/Gardner Architects
Luke Hayman, Partner, Pentagram
Yvonne Stennett, Executive Director, Community League of the Heights
This year's Bash will be especially memorable, as we also welcome our new Executive Director Hayley Eber. As founder of award-winning practice Studio Eber and Acting Dean of The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture at The Cooper Union, Hayley brings a wealth of leadership experience and commitment to our values of community-building and just urban futures.
Please join us at the Bash to celebrate our honorees and welcome Hayley!

As with everything we do, accessibility is our goal, so tickets to this year's Bash are
pay-what-you-can
with a suggested
$75 donation.
Guests are welcome to give at whatever level feels most comfortable and donations above $75 help us ensure that all members of Van Alen’s community can enjoy this fun-filled evening.

LIMITED EDITION MERCH
For the first time ever, we're selling limited edition Van Alen apparel and accessories for pickup at the Bond Street Bash.
This year’s collection features some of the most whimsical and wildly creative imagery from Van Alen's archive. For the 1989 William Van Alen Memorial Fellowship, Michael Sorkin wrote a poetic prompt inviting designers to imagine a celestial space where world leaders gather to work towards conflict resolution. Nearly four decades later, the question of how design can work in service of peace remains as vital as ever. Merch will be available for pick up at the Bond Street Bash - if you're unable to pick up your oder in person, please contact pdubey@vanalen.org to coordinate alternate deliver or pick-up options.
Only available while supplies last — don’t miss out!

For fans of
New Kid
and
Stealing Home
, an unforgettable portrait of childhood during the one-child era in China.
In her early years, Yinfan lives in the small Chinese county of Xintian, surrounded by family members. But when they move for her father’s new job to the city of Guangzhou, her life changes dramatically. Not only does Yinfan need to adjust to a new dialect, but she also has to comply with many new rules at home and in school, and deal with her loneliness. Yinfan yearns to make a good friend, and she does her best to try and fit in. That is, until a girl in her class helps her realize she likes herself just the way she is.
This graphic memoir from author and illustrator Yinfan Huang offers a heartwarming look at a girl’s struggle to forge her own identity in her quest for friendship. Full of fascinating details about life as a child and adolescent in 1990s China, it offers a timely message about how the challenges of growing up are universal.
