Proteinhacker Boot Camp | Genspace
May 25, 2025 (UTC-4)
Brooklyn
In-person 3 part class:
Sunday, May 25 from 10am-2 PM EDT
Saturday,
May 31 from 10am-2 PM EDT
Sunday, June 1 from 10am-2 PM EDT
What are proteins?
Are they what you eat? Do they make you swole? Turns out, proteins are the workhorses of the cell and they do nearly everything!
Proteins are chains of amino acids--small molecules strung together that are the ultimate product of genes. These genetically encoded molecules have vast functions in cells, allowing for movement, speeding up chemical reactions, and serving as signaling molecules within and between cells.
Deficiency in particular proteins can lead to diseases, for example, insulin deficiency causes diabetes. 50 years ago, scientists discovered a way to engineer microbes into protein production factories using recombinant DNA technology. This breakthrough revolutionized biological therapeutics. Today, nearly every therapeutic protein is made this way, from monoclonal antibodies to GLP-1 receptor agonists—proteins that mimic naturally occurring hormones to help regulate blood sugar, support weight loss, and treat metabolic diseases.
In this course
, you will learn how to transform
E. coli
into protein-producing factories!
First, we will introduce recombinant plasmid DNA containing the gene for green fluorescent protein (GFP) into
E. coli
in a process known as a transformation.
Then, you’ll isolate the GFP from the bacteria using an “affinity resin” to capture the molecule.
We will conclude the workshop by analyzing the purification process via SDS-PAGE (another type of gel electrophoresis).

COVID-19 Safety Notice:
If you are feeling unwell, suspect that you have been exposed to COVID-19 or test positive, please do not attend and let us know ASAP (info@genspace.org).
If you cancel after our 7-day policy, we cannot refund your ticket, but we can exchange and offer credits toward future classes.
If you have signed up for Biohacker Boot Camp, we will automatically transfer your registration to the next month’s dates unless you tell us otherwise.
Meet the Instructor
Charles Warren is currently a fourth year PhD candidate in Jacob Geri’s lab at Weill Cornell. He grew up outside of Charlotte, North Carolina and received his BS in Chemistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill while working in the lab of Dr. Matthew Redinbo. Here, he gained an interest in protein biochemistry, identifying, purifying, and characterizing enzymes in the human gut microbiome that influence host physiology. During undergraduate, he also interned at Halda Therapeutics and the Tri-I Chemical Biology Summer Program (hosted by Weill Cornell Medicine, Memorial Sloan Kettering, and the Rockefeller University) where he became passionate about research at the interface of chemistry, biology, and drug development. After undergraduate, he returned to the Tri-I to pursue his PhD in Chemical Biology and joined Jacob Geri’s lab, where he has focused on developing chemical methods to identify and characterize protein-protein interactions. Basically, Charlie LOVES the study of proteins, their functions and their interaction with other proteins and biomolecules in cells!

Carsie Blanton @ littlefield | littlefield
May 25, 2025 (UTC-4)
Brooklyn
DOORS 7PM | OPENER 8PM
Carsie Blanton
is a songwriter with hooks, chutzpah, and revolutionary optimism. “It is possible to face the world as it is - rapidly heating, ruled by grifters, ravaged by profitable wars - and still have hope,” she says of her newest release, After the Revolution. “Not the narrow, grasping hope you might hang on an election or a billionaire, but a patient, zoomed-out hope.”
Of After the Revolution, NPR’s Fresh Air says "Protest music tends to be strident or self-righteous or just bluntly angry. But Blanton, a folk singer with a rock attitude, knows how to construct songs with real melodies and storylines that don't obscure her messages."
With her unique mix of humor, craft, and social critique, Blanton has amassed a small menagerie of viral hits (Rich People, Shit List, Fishin’ With You) and a dedicated fan base. In addition to fifteen years on the road with her band, Blanton volunteers as a political organizer, and was recently published in The Nation.
Her latest full-length album After the Revolution, produced by Grammy-winner Tyler Chester, came out on March 21st. In summer of 2024, Blanton began releasing her most viral political songs on a new EP, The Red Album Vol. 1.

Her newest release is a self-titled EP produced by Grammy-winner Tyler Chester which showcases Tranbaugh in her new era: energetic, self-assured, surrounded by her beloved musical community, and more commanding as a vocalist and writer than ever before.

IN-STORE EVENT

The Last Supper: Art, Faith, Sex, and Controversy in the 1980s
In conversation with Ada Calhoun
Local Fort Greene author Paul Elie (author of the acclaimed books

and
Reinventing Bach
) takes the stage at Greenlight to launch
The Last Supper
: a vivid and revealing new cultural history of the 1980s. An immersive group portrait, Elie traces the beginning of our age—in which religion is both surging and in decline—through the lives and work of Martin Scorsese, Madonna, Andy Warhol, U2, and many others.
The Last Supper
is a groundbreaking account of the origins of our postsecular present, and the moment when popular culture became the site of religious strife—strife that set the stage for some of the most salient political and cultural clashes of our day. Elie discusses the book with
New York Times
bestselling author Ada Calhoun (

This event is presented in collaboration with Transit Books and n+1 magazine.
Continuing her investigation into the archive, Iman Mersal sifts through representations of one of history’s most elusive figures—the hidden mother.
No one excluded my mother from our joint portrait. It is before me now and I can see for myself that I was with her, but she is a ghost. The picture is a burden: an assault on, and fabrication of, what I remember. It doesn’t make my mother present; it sharpens my desire to resist, to transcend her ghostliness, to rescue what the picture hides.
Iman Mersal has only one photograph of her mother, who died giving birth at age twenty-seven. But the woman portrayed in it strikes her as very unlike the one in her fleeting childhood memories, in mood, expression, dress. When Mersal has a child of her own decades later, she begins to wonder whether it’s possible to depict a mother with any degree of fidelity. How to represent—in photography, dream, memory, or writing—an individual whose complex inner landscape has suddenly come under threat of looming archetypes? What is hidden in traditional representations of motherhood? What lies outside the narrative in which motherhood “means giving, the melding of two distinct selves, a love unlimited and unconditional”?
Sifting through the archives of motherhood, including journal entries, photographs, and the writings that have informed her own poetic practice, Mersal privileges questions over answers, drifting over arriving, allowing a form of motherhood to exist in these pages unbounded.
Iman Mersal
is an Egyptian writer, translator, and literary scholar. A professor of Arabic language and literature at the University of Alberta, she is the author of five books of Arabic poetry. In English translation, her poems have appeared in The New Republic, The New York Review of Books, Parnassus, The Paris Review, and The Nation, among others.
The Threshold
, translated by Robyn Creswell and published in 2022, was shortlisted for the Griffin Poetry Prize and won the 2023 National Translation Award. Mersal received the 2021 Sheikh Zayed Book Award in Literature for her creative nonfiction book
Traces of Enayat
, published by Transit Books in 2024.
Dayna Tortorici
is a writer and co-Editor in Chief of

An enthralling, intimate collection of essays and over 75 recipes exploring the history of eight countries to understand the impact of geopolitical conflict and its outcomes on cuisine and food system, from Somali refugee and James Beard Award-winning author of
In Bibi's Kitchen
.
Countries dealing with major conflict are rarely portrayed in a well-rounded light by the media. Images of disarray and decline saturate their narratives, ignoring the strength, resourcefulness, and ingenuity that arise from having to navigate conflict. With empathy, curiosity, and an insistence on sharing different aspects of human survival, Hawa Hassan gathers singular, multifaceted narratives for eight countries from around the world.
Each chapter is devoted to a different country and opens with an informative essay on the culture and its history. Recipes follow highlighting indigenous ingredients and share intimate portraits of the people preserving food culture, including food from:
Afghanistan
, such as Bolani (Stuffed Flatbread) and Borani Banjan (Stewed Eggplant with Garlic Yogurt)
Democratic Republic of Congo
, such as Chikwanga (Cassava Flour Cake) and Pondu (Cassava Leaf Stew)
Egypt
, such as Ta'ameya (Fava Bean Fritters) and Ghorayeba (Shortbread Cookies)
El Salvador
, such as Sopa de Res (Beef Shank Soup) and Pupusas con Curtido (Filled Masa Flatbreads with Cabbage Slaw)
Iraq
, such as Shorbat Adas (Lentil Soup) and Bamia (Lamb and Okra Stew)
Lebanon
, such as Malfouf (Stuffed Cabbage Rolls) and Mouhamara (Spicy Walnut and Red Pepper dip)
Liberia
, such as Ground Peanut Soup and Kala (Sweet Fried Dough)
Yemen
, such as Saltah (Lamb Stew with Fenugreek Fruth) and Sahawiq
An original and groundbreaking work,
Setting a Place for Us
returns agency to the people whose stories, up until now, have been ignored in the media. It sheds light on the important work of preserving recipes and food traditions in places of conflict and migration.
Hawa Hassan
is a James Beard Award-winning author, celebrated chef, Food Network personality, and founder of Basbaas Foods, a line of African-inspired condiments that blend tradition with innovation. Born in Somalia and shaped by her experiences as a refugee, Hawa uses food as a bridge to connect people and cultures. She is the author of the critically acclaimed
In Bibi’s Kitchen
, which shares recipes and stories from African grandmothers, and her forthcoming book,
Setting a Place for Us: Recipes and Stories of Displacement, Resilience, and Community
(May 2025), explores the deep connections between food, identity, displacement, and heritage. With features in
Forbes
,
The New York Times
, and
Eater
, Hawa continues to inspire through her storytelling, passion for culture, and dedication to celebrating the flavors of her home continent.
Kimberly Drew
is a curator and cultural critic. Drew received her B.A. from Smith College in Art History and African-American Studies. Her books
Black Futures
, co-edited with J Wortham, and
This is What I Know About Art
are both available wherever books are sold.
