Bucky; Beyond the Material ... The Metaphysics of Buckminster Fuller | Philosophical Research Society

Apr 23, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
City of Los Angeles
Cultural Experiences
Bucky; Beyond the Material ... The Metaphysics of Buckminster Fuller with Benjamin Lowder Delve into the cosmology of Buckminster Fuller with Benjamin Lowder as he chronicles Bucky's quest to know the invisible aspects of Universe through measuring what is visible. Explore what Fuller meant when he said, “I'm not trying to copy Nature, I'm trying to find the principles she's using." We will be looking at Fuller's geodesic architecture and geometric models such as the "vector equilibrium" as artifacts of his goal to understand "nature's coordinating system." This is part of our Philosophy of Design Series : This April and May, we celebrate the transformative power of design with a series of events examining the work of influential architects of the past. We'll explore how their unique philosophies and principles were reflected in their creations—works that not only shaped the way we view the world and experience space but opened up new possibilities for ways of living. Benjamin Lowder is an artist based in rural Illinois and works as Director of the geodesic dome that Buckminster Fuller built on the Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville campus. Lowder also serves as a Board Member for Buckminster Fuller’s historic dome home in Carbondale, Illinois. Lowder is an alumnus of SIU, which is the University where Fuller was employed as professor from 1959 to 1975. Ticket price: $15, Sliding Scale Ticket $5-10 (in person event only). Zaynab Issa in Conversation for Third Culture Cooking | Now Serving

Apr 24, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
City of Los Angeles
Cultural Experiences
Zaynab Issa, recipe developer, food editor, content creator, and Bon Appétit contributor, in conversation with Molly Baz for Third Culture Cooking: Classic Recipes for a New Generation . Book signing and meet and greet to follow. Third Culture Cooking is American Cooking: Delicious everyday multicultural recipes, borrowing from our parents and their parents’ homes, melding the old with the new and the familiar with the unfamiliar to create bold flavors and new classics for the next generation of cooks. The food that author Zaynab Issa cooks—inspired by her East African and South Asian roots, the American suburban delights she grew up eating, and her international travels—is packed with unique and flavorful riffs. Her affectionate homages to the chain restaurants we love are reflected here: fluffy cinnamon rolls that rival Cinnabon’s, Baskin Robbins–inspired almond fudge squares, and an artichoke dip that recalls TGI Fridays’ delights that will make you want to stay in. To complete the collection, Zaynab looked to her primary inspiration, the women who’ve fed her, and meticulously recorded her favorite traditional dishes from each of them. Beyond the recipes, Zaynab shares her tips on establishing yourself as a confident cook—one who prepares food consciously, hosts with pride, and is never without a well-stocked pantry. The book includes sections like "Set Yourself Up for Success," which outlines Zaynab’s essential kitchen tools and ingredients, "On Food & Feelings" to guide the reader through cooking based on their mood, and "Host with the Most" featuring suggested menus and Zaynab’s method for executing any organized dinner. Finally, look to "Eating with Your Eyes" for her philosophy on serving beautiful food. For extravagant entertaining as well as weeknight ease, Third Culture Cooking is a love letter to American home-cooking and the many influences that make it so. Recipes include: French Onion Ramen Samosas Two Ways Chocolate Cake with Chai Buttercream Farzana’s Biryani Thai-Style Crispy Salmon Steak Sandwich with Date Chutney Tandoori Tacos Baklava Granola Banana Cake with Tahini Fudge Chicken Kitchri and many more! Zaynab Issa is a cookbook author, recipe developer, and content creator based in Brooklyn, New York. After publishing a zine that formalized her family’s Khoja recipes, she worked as a food editor at Bon Appetit , contributing culturally rooted recipes and stories to their archive. She is now a contributor at New York Times Cooking, and has developed recipes for King Arthur Baking, The Kitchn, and Food52. Molly Baz is a 2x New York Times bestselling cookbook author of Cook This Book (2021) & More is More (2023), recipe developer, and video host whose number one goal in life is to convince the world that cooking is fun, and not that hard to do if you’re properly set up. When she’s not writing books, Molly hosts a subscription digital recipe club, The Club, where she drops new recipes weekly for her fans. When she’s not doing that, you can find her at home sipping on a glass of Drink This Wine (that’s her natural wine company!), slathering Ayoh on her sandwiches (that's her brand-new mayo company!) and shooting lots of fun, short-form videos to better equip her followers in the kitchen! Sophisticated Simplicity Our events offer a fresh alternative to speed dating and matchmaking. We don't find anything romantic about whistles, name-tags or over-the-top party trimmings typically found at singles events so we have done away with them. Creating an atmosphere that is at once casual and comfortable. It's what we call cheeky-chic! Meet a partner to attend concerts, music festivals, bar crawls or fitness classes. Someone who shares your passions and interests - from sports to yoga - all in a setting just your speed. - Upon registration, you'll be sent an email inviting you to login to your mobile MyCheekyDate ‘Smart-Card’. As the event begins, login to your scorecard and let the flirting begin. You'll be able to choose whom you fancy meeting again, to what degree you like them and have until midnight to submit your final selections for matching. Once the clock strikes midnight - return to our platform to see your matches. It's where Cheeky meets convenience! You can also access your profile via mobile, tablet or PC. Our platform isn't an app so it requires absolutely no downloading and can be accessed directly from our website, anytime. Paper scorecards are just so 2010! The night has arrived! Go to the venue at the published start time for the event. There is no official start time to the speed dating portion of the evening - we like to wait for all daters to arrive, to have a moment to settle in with a refreshment and mingle should they wish. Our personable hosts will assist you with your MyCheekyDate 'Smart-Card’ Scorecard. Flirty and fun, your mobile scorecard is just the beginning. Chat up our Hosts for tips or simply to ask, which direction the bar is in! After being shown to your table, the ladies will remain seated for the duration of the event. The gents move from lovely lady to lovely lady every six to seven minutes. Your mobile scorecard gives you the ability to see all the participants attending your event, upload your picture, make your selections and be notified of your matches all from your phone. Offering uncompromising value with unparalleled service. Lovely venues and our lovely Hosts to assist you with anything or anyone. ----- If you are interested in reading about our Blind-Date Matchmaking with packages ranging from $595 to $945, please click here.
