Family Gatherings: Portraits on Canvas with Kentler | Brooklyn Children's Museum
Apr 27, 2025 (UTC-4)
Brooklyn
EKC is excited to partner with Center for All Abilities (CAA) for the second workshop in their community workshop series at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum!
Thanks to CAA’s sponsorship, this special family gathering is completely free to attend.
As always for our Family Gatherings, families are invited to explore the museum and it's exhibits from 4 PM to 5 PM, then head to the rooftop from 5 PM to 6 PM for outdoor play and a hands-on art experience. This month, in collaboration with Kentler International Art, artist Toto will lead a unique portrait activity—an opportunity to paint what represents you, rather than a traditional self-portrait. It’s a playful and expressive experience for all ages, like a family-friendly twist on a sip-and-paint!
CAA’s Blue Hat team will also be joining us to serve a variety of hot and cold beverages, including Coconut Cold Brew, Blue Sky Lemonade, Hot Chocolate with evaporated milk, Horlicks, Ovaltine, Ribena with lemon, Pour-over Coffee, and Hot/Cold Tea.
We’re so grateful to CAA for making this event possible, and we can't wait to see you there!

Bike the “Last Mile” | Cooper Park
Apr 27, 2025 (UTC-4)
Brooklyn
This 5-mile bike tour, hosted by Newtown Creek Alliance and the Last Mile Coalition, will explore the expanding infrastructure of commodity circulation, and the real-world footprint of e-commerce, around the Creekside neighborhood of Maspeth. This present condition comes in the context of 200+ years of Newtown Creek transportation logistics, from horse-carts and barges to rails and trucks.
The rise of e-commerce has seen a rapid increase in last-mile developments in the industrial business zones, like those surrounding Newtown Creek. These mega facilities bring significant amounts of increased truck traffic to overburdened communities leading to higher levels of congestion, worsened air quality, urban heat island impacts, stormwater runoff, as well as ongoing issues with worker protections, fair wagers, and labor rights. NYC is now working to implement a special permit process to curtail the proliferation of last mile facilities, thanks in large part to the advocacy from elected leaders and the
Last Mile Coalition
(of which NCA is a member).
We encourage those joining to be comfortable bicycling in the City – this route has adverse street conditions and frequent truck traffic.
We ask that attendees fill out a liability waiver and photo consent form prior to joining, found
here
. Please bring a water bottle, snacks, and weather-appropriate clothing. We will have limited staff in attendance to navigate and provide support.

Reclaiming Your Story: Family & Systemic Constellations Workshop | 320 Dean St
Apr 28, 2025 (UTC-4)
Brooklyn
Sometimes the things we struggle with—whether it’s in work, relationships, health, or purpose—aren’t just about us. They’re part of something bigger: the systems we’re part of, the stories we’ve inherited, and the patterns that live beneath the surface.
This workshop offers a powerful way to explore what might be holding you back—and what could help you move forward.
We’ll do an experiential process to look at what’s often invisible: the deeper roots of stuck patterns, repeated challenges, or places where life just isn’t flowing. Through guided practices and live demonstrations, you’ll get a chance to experience what it’s like to see from a systemic perspective.
Whether you’re new to constellation work or looking to go deeper, this session is a chance to slow down, tune in, and begin to shift what’s been hard to name or change.
What We'll Do:
A fresh lens on work, health, relationships, and more—beyond analysis or mindset
Ways to sense into systems, even when you can’t see them
Simple practices to help you integrate what you learn into your everyday life
Space for your own question or life situation, with guidance on how to explore it
This Might Be for You If...
You’re facing a challenge that feels stuck or keeps repeating
You're curious about what’s really going on beneath the surface of your life
You’ve done other healing work, but something still feels unresolved
You support others (as a coach, therapist, facilitator, etc.) and want to explore systemic tools
You want insight—not just information—and transformation that goes beyond talking
No experience with constellation work is needed. All are welcome.
What to Bring
A question or situation you'd like to explore (big or small—it’s all welcome)
Spots are limited to keep the space intimate and focused.
Facilitated by Alissa Fleet
Alissa Fleet has been guiding people through constellation work for 7 years, creating safe, grounded spaces to explore life’s deeper patterns. With training in Consciousness and Transformative Studies, Alissa brings a mix of clarity, compassion, and deep respect for each person’s unique journey.

A prismatic, mind-bending epic about the splintering of a Jewish family from Vienna—exploring the weight of exile and how grief twists our sense of the impossible.
Everyone had been survived into different futures and that I would never see any of them again. I could sense this. I would hear them in their separate rooms, within their separate lives, but I would not be able to cross over to meet them.
In
Rooms for Vanishing
, the violence of war has fractured the universe for the Altermans, a Jewish family from Vienna. Moving across decades, and across the world, the novel finds the Altermans alone in their separate futures, haunted by the loss of their loved ones, each certain that they are the sole survivor of their family.
Sonja, the daughter, has gone in search of her husband who has disappeared into London; Fania, the mother, is confronted with her doppelgänger in the basement of a Montreal hotel; Moses, the son, is followed by the ghost of his best friend and eventually returns to Prague to make peace with the dead; and Arnold, the father, dares to believe that his long-lost daughter might be alive after he receives a message from an Englishwoman claiming to be her. Through their stories, we come to see how—amid profound loss and the madness of grief—ghosts are made momentarily real.
Spellbinding and profound,
Rooms for Vanishing
explores the boundary between desire and reality; this is a singular work that masterfully considers the possibility of magic, and the dangerous and impossible hope for a different history.

For readers of
Also a Poet, Orwell’s Roses
, and
My Autobiography Of Carson McCullers
—as well as the legions of Virginia Woolf fanatics—the acclaimed poet and author of
The Crying Book
crafts a deeply moving, immersive, and lyrical hybrid memoir about her mother, Woolf, and the transformative power of writing.
When Heather Christle realizes that she, her mother, and Virginia Woolf share a traumatic history, she begins to rewrite and intertwine each of their stories, in search of a more hopeful narrative and a future she can live with.
On a recent visit to London's Kew Gardens, Christle’s mother revealed details of a painful story from her past that took place there, under circumstances that strangely paralleled Heather's own sexual assault during a visit to London as a teenager.
Her private, British mother’s revelation—a rare burst of vulnerability in their strained relationship—propels Christle down a deep and destabilizing rabbit hole of investigation, as she both reads and wanders the streets of her mother's past, peeling back the layers of family mythologies, England’s sanctioned historical narratives, and her own buried memories. Over the course of several trips to London, with and without her mother, she visits her family's "birthday hill" in Kew Gardens, the now-public homes of the Bloomsbury set, the archives of the British Library, and the backyard garden where Woolf wrote her final sentence. All the while, she finds that Woolf and her writings not only constantly seem to connect and overlap with her mother’s story, but also that the author becomes a kind of vital intermediary: a sometimes confidante, sometimes mentor, sometimes distancing lens through which Christle can safely observe her mother and their experiences.
Wide-ranging and prismatic, the fruit of an insatiably curious, delightfully brilliant mind,
In the Rhododendrons
is part memoir, part biography of Virginia Woolf, part reckoning with the things we cannot change and the ways we can completely transform, if we dare. This utterly original book will stir readers into new ways of seeing their own lives.
Heather Christle
is the author of
The Crying Book
(Catapult), a
New York Times
Editor’s Choice, Indie Next selection, and national bestseller that was translated into eight languages, awarded the Georgia Book Award for memoir, and adapted for radio by the BBC. An associate professor of English and Creative Writing at Emory University, Christle is also the author of four poetry collections including
The Trees The Trees
, which won the Believer Book Award and was adapted into a ballet by the Pacific Northwest Ballet. Her writing has been published in
The Believer, Elle, Granta, London Review of Books,
and
The New Yorker
, and she was recently the recipient of a George A. and Eliza Gardner Howard Foundation Fellowship in nonfiction.
Kimberly Belflower
is a playwright and educator originally from a small town in Appalachian Georgia. Plays include: JOHN PROCTOR IS THE VILLAIN (2025 Broadway, 2024 Huntington Theatre, 2022 Studio Theatre, 2019 Kilroys List, published by Dramatists/Broadway Licensing, Farm Theatre College Collaboration Project); LOST GIRL (2018 Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, Kennedy Center Darrell Ayers National Playwriting Award, published by Sam French/Concord Theatricals); SAINT PIGTAIL (commissioned and developed by Studio Theatre). This event is presented in partnership with Plan C.
Plan C is a public health creative campaign on abortion pill access, started in 2015 by a small team of veteran public health advocates, researchers, social justice activists.
Read about our values here.
We invite parents, educators, caregivers, and abortion providers to join for an important and thought-provoking event featuring Carly Kol and Emulsify, the authors of
Let’s Talk About Abortion
. This book is a groundbreaking resource that provides a compassionate and age-appropriate approach to discussing abortion care with kids. It serves as a guide for adults looking to navigate conversations about reproductive health with children and young people in a supportive and nonjudgmental way.
In this event, both authors who are experienced abortion doulas, will share how their work in the field informed the creation of the book and why it is crucial to have these open discussions. The event will include an interactive reading of the book, followed by a Q&A where attendees can engage with the creators on approaching these topics with children and how caregivers, can create spaces for healthy, empathetic dialogue.
Let's Talk About Abortion
is a groundbreaking, nonjudgmental, and gender-inclusive resource designed to help parents, caretakers, and providers compassionately discuss abortion with children ages 6 to 12.
In a landscape where no other children's books discuss this topic,
Let's Talk About Abortion
fills a crucial gap. It provides a medically accurate, gender-inclusive, and nonjudgmental resource that acknowledges the diverse and complex nature of abortion care. The book's text is carefully constructed without gender-specific language or one specific character, recognizing that each abortion experience is unique and personal.
Let's Talk About Abortion
is more than just a book; it's a compassionate guide designed to support honest and open dialogue, empowering young readers with knowledge and understanding in a safe and supportive manner.
Carly Manes
(she/her) is a white, queer, Jewish full spectrum doula from New York. She has always believed that young people deserve transparency when it comes to information about their sexual health and bodies. Carly has been a practicing abortion doula for over six years, supporting more than 2,000 individuals during their in-clinic procedures. She loves the beach, chicken tenders, and her communities. She lives with her partner Mo and their playful pitbull Mickey.
Emulsify
(they/them) is a queer parent and full-spectrum doula. They create art to imagine new worlds. PUNDERDOME®: NYC’s Comedy PUN-SLAM Compuntition - 14th Anniversary Show! | littlefield
Apr 30, 2025 (UTC-4)
Brooklyn
“NYC's hilarious cult-favorite pun competition ... both an endearingly homemade and impressively high-caliber show during which astute wordsmiths spin clever and very funny puns to a packed house.”
-The New York Times
The PUNDERDOME® is NYC’s Comedy PUN-SLAM Compuntition! Founded by a Rodney Dangerfield impersonator and his alleged daughter (Fred and comedian Jo Firestone), the PUNDERDOME® has been a fixture on New York’s comedy landscape since May 2011. The alleged dad will be hosting tonight!
Show will feature our Main Event - the
ALL-STAR TOURNAMENT OF PUN CHAMPIONS
, where punsters deliver two-minute pun-stand-up routines, after only two minutes of preparation!
PUNDERDOME® Champs and others will pun it out for ’Dome bragging rights and “As Seen on TV”-type prizes!
And, that’s not all...
We’ll play “Can You Beat a ’Dome Champ?” where a Challenger takes on Current Punderdome® Champ in a one-on-one 2-minute PUN-OFF. Challenger can opt to get topic 24 hours in advance and use any human and non-human resources (INCLUDING AI) in preparation. ’Dome Champ gets no advance notice AND learns what topic is when the PUN-OFF begins! WINNER GETS UP TO $100!
NOTE: At the December 7, 2022 PUNDERDOME, Wall Street Journal reporter Ben Eisen challenged a PUNDERDOME Champ in “Can You Beat a ’Dome Champ?” and prepared by digesting four-hours of ChatGPT research. He went down in defeat but did survive to write about it on the front page of the WSJ:
"I Entered a Pun Competition. My Jokes Were Written by an AI Chatbot"
Six individuals who sign-up at the bar (doors open at 7:00) will have a chance to punticipate in the
PUN BATTLE ROYALE
.
There will be
PPPPs (Previously Prepared Punderdome® Parodies and Puntifications)
.
Pun-masters will be determined by the calibrated
“Human Clap-O-Meter”
who “accurately and scientifically” assesses levels of audience applause.
WARNING FOR THE FAINT OF HEART:
the ’Dome is THE spectator sport
; it gets loud – decide to attend at your own risk! Hearing protection gear recommended!
Punderdome Reviews:
GQ Magazine shouted the Punderdome® as one of the “
5 Funniest Nights in America
,” and quoted comedian Chris Gethard on why it’s great: “The crowd. You’d think you were at the Roman Colosseum. They’re passionate, to a level that feels dangerous. And to reiterate, this is a pun competition.”
The New Yorker’s “
Battle of Wits: A Report from the Punderdome
”: “Can you imagine a more potent cure for the weekday blues? Here was concentrated, unabashed silliness that I longed to bottle and smuggle out in my purse.”
Swing American
: “The intellect on display is stunning. Hardly a pun is repeated throughout the entire night. What Punderdome ends up achieving is the transformation of the delivery of the lowly pun to one of the greatest displays of human ingenuity contemporary New York has to offer."
