Our Summer Academy is five days of non-stop entertainment and learning that kids will love. This program includes all of the components that make up the great game of golf. From chipping, putting and full swing, to the rules and etiquette, kids will learn everything they need to know to improve their game. Each Academy is taught in a fun, relaxed atmosphere and is staffed with a low student-to-instructor ratio to ensure each Junior Golfer receives in-depth, hands-on attention while he or she develops a winning golf swing. Are you a hands-on learner? One of the best ways to learn about plants, botany, and plant parts is through drawing them! Whether you are a buddy botanist working on your plant identification skills or an artist who enjoys bringing some science to your craft, this course is for you. No skill is required.
This class is on June 7th from12:30-3:30PM. The class will be held at the El Paso County Extension Office located at 17 N. Spruce St., Colorado Springs, CO 80903. We will be spending time in the Native Plant Demonstration Garden so please plan for wearing sun protection. Bring water and any supplies that you would like to use, though supplies will also be provided.
When/Where to Meet:
Meet at the El Paso County Extension Office. We will primarily be in the Native Plant Demonstration Garden on the west side of the building.
What to Bring:
Personal drinking water, sun protection, any art supplies you would like to try using. Optional: Flora of Colorado by Jennifer Ackerfield hand lens (10X or greater), something to sit on.

Native Plants: Birds and Blooms Aiken Canyon | Aiken Canyon Preserve

Park Description:
The habitat of Aiken Canyon Preserve is mixed grassland and woodland. Lower areas of the park feature pinyons and junipers and host birds such as the Juniper Titmouse and Spotted Towhee (pictured). Upper elevations give way to ponderosas and douglas-firs where nuthatches and woodpeckers abound. We will also likely see hummingbirds, flycatchers, vireos, jays, chickadees, warblers, tanagers, and grosbeaks. Equal attention will be given to the native plant species that form these ecosystems.

Meet at the Aiken Canyon Preserve trailhead parking area. Class will begin at 7:30am sharp.
What to Bring (Suggested):
Binoculars, Flora of Colorado by Jennifer Ackerfield; hand lens (10X or greater), daypack, bug spray, water, snacks, rain/sun/wind protection. Consider bringing trekking poles if you think you may benefit from them, though the trails are relatively flat.
Special Instructions:
Please come prepared for moderate to strenuous walking on hot, cold, windy, snowy or rainy days.

Park Description:
North Cheyenne Cañon Park is a city-owned park with over 1,600 acres. The park has two visitor's centers and has many many miles of trails. Helen Hunt Falls sits near the top of the park and water from Cheyenne creek flows through the canyon. Imposing walls form either side of the canyon where sandstone and shale is marked by granite outcrops and peaks. Diverse and abundant plant life thrives in these varying ecosystems.

Meet at the Starsmore Visitor and Nature Center. Class will begin at 8:30am sharp. We will likely carpool to a higher location in the canyon.
