Art Appreciation Course: Conceptual Art | Hugh Lane Gallery

Dublin
Arts
Fine Art
Conceptual Art Wednesdays 9, 16, 23 and 30 July 2025, 2.30pm-4.30pm Led by Jessica Fahy, this four part course will trace the development of conceptual art from the early 20th century to the present day. Drawing from the Hugh Lane collection there will be in depth analysis of individual works as well as a broader look of the art movement internationally. As part of the examination of conceptual art in Ireland the influence of literature and theatre and writers like Joyce and Beckett will be considered. Performance art and installations will also be explored. Visual artists to be discussed include Marcel Duchamp, Brian O’Doherty, Joseph Beuys, Alice Maher, Michael Craig-Martin, Kathy Pendergast, Dorothy Cross and Jesse Jones. From Marcel Duchamp to Brian O'Doherty and Joseph Beuys, and throughout the 1960s and 1970s to today, Conceptual Art refers to an artistic practice where artists avail of whatever form- including language, text, performance, found and ephemeral objects – they believe is the most appropriate to putting their ideas across. For many artists, the primacy of the idea over the physical art object also has a strong socio-political dimension to the work they produce and is a reaction to the commodification of art, the autonomy of the museum and how art is traditionally presented. These illustrated talks are taking place in person at the Hugh Lane Gallery or participants can choose to attend live online. A meeting ID will be sent to all participants each week. Fee: €90, advance booking required via Eventbrite. Information Source: Hugh Lane Gallery | eventbrite

After releasing his first album at age 14 (The Golden Voice of Paul Byrom), Paul got a taste for recording studios and soon became a recording artist. Subsequently, he recorded his first major album as a tenor (VELVET), in 2005 and swiftly followed this with his first Christmas album (I’ll Be Home for Christmas) in 2008. This has led to many appearances on Irish television and national radio stations. Paul is also very fond of acting and made his onscreen debut in Ireland’s longest-running soap, “FAIR CITY” where he appeared regularly as Maurice the chef for a short stint. His talent as a singer has taken him far and wide, and some of his many career highlights include performing for dignitaries such as Emperor Akihito of Japan, former Irish Presidents Mary McAleese and Mary Robinson, and more recently, United States President Barack Obama. In 2007, Paul was approached to become one of the original soloists in the hit show Celtic Thunder. He toured America, Canada and Australia with the group and had six No. 1 World Billboard Chart albums with the group. This allowed Paul to perform on many international TV shows including “The Today Show.” After leaving the production in 2010 to continue his solo career, his subsequent album (This is the Moment) debuted at No. 1 on the World Billboard charts and was shortlisted for a Grammy nomination. This has led to a successful solo touring career and he now performs his shows regularly throughout Ireland, North America and Canada. In 2013, Paul filmed his first solo TV special for Public Television, called “This is the Moment Live”, with his orchestra. It has aired throughout the United States, Canada, Australia and indeed at home here in Ireland. Paul followed this up with his 6th studio album, (Thinking of Home) which reached the top of the iTunes, Amazon and World Billboard charts and features two of his own, original songs. He has been named IRISH TENOR OF THE YEAR by the Irish Music Association on two separate occasions. IRISH TMES - WICKEDLY GOOD Paul Byrom IRISH TIMES - Paul Byrom has all the ingredients to become a huge star IRISH INDEPENDENT - “Easy listening – which the young love ironically and the old love wholeheartedly – is on an upward curve and ‘Velvet’ which reached No. 2 in the albums charts, may just have been the making of Byrom – this show case performance, featuring a 26 piece orchestra has long been a sell-out.” IRISH INDEPENDENT “He does not interpret the music so much as channel it, his voice a dark, lustrous force of nature. Around him, the orchestra conjures a crashing swooning swell; listeners may feel as if they have passed through the silver screen and into a forgotten Hollywood musical.” Information Source: The Venue at Walters | eventbrite

The Smuggler, Dublin | J.R. MAHON'S

Dublin

Theater
It’s 2025. Tim Finnegan is an Irish immigrant trying to make it as a writer on Amity, an affluent summer colony in Massachusetts, where tensions flare between the migrant and local communities after a fatal car crash. When he loses his job as a bartender and his two-year-old son Eddie falls ill, Tim gets drawn into the dark underbelly of the island. The Smuggler examines how far one man will go to restore his self-respect and asks the question, “What does it mean to be an American citizen?” Written entirely in rhymed verse, Ronán Noone won the Best Playwright Award for this gripping, playful, and strikingly original work at Origin Theatre’s 1st Irish Festival in 2019. This production made its Off-Broadway premiere at Irish Repertory Theatre in 2023, earning acclaim for its environmental staging, unflinching relevance, and Michael Mellamphy’s tour-de-force performance. Directed by two-time Tony Award-winning producer Conor Bagley and produced by New York entrepreneur Jessica M. DeLucia, The Smuggler stars award winning actor Michael Mellamphy—known for his work on US television, the New York stage, and as the cheeky outlaw Seán MacGuire in the global video game phenomenon Red Dead Redemption 2. What the critics said!!! “...terrific one-man, one-act play… Mellamphy is a dynamic presence, shifting easily among male and female roles and a variety of accents, while showing off some damn impressive cocktail-mixing moves.” Ken Marks, The New Yorker “Mr. Mellamphy sustains this sense of urgency, and capably manages the balance of affability and darkness his role demands.” The Sun “Rarely has a man’s moral decline been made so purely entertaining to watch.” Theatermania “Mellamphy dazzles for 85 minutes… It is physical acting at its highest level as Mellamphy visually and vocally soars.” Theaterscene Information Source: Jessica, Michael & Conor | eventbrite
