Every year, hundreds of us whose hearts flutter for instant-photography are pulled together like a vortex by the PolaCon call. We travel from all over the world to be there, we share long days and little sleep, we see old friends and we meet new ones, we learn tips and tricks from each other, we share cameras, we share stories, and we create memories and photographs to last a lifetime. PolaCon is a pilgrimage for those who cherish the tangible magic of instant film. We can't wait to see you there. -- GET INVOLVED We are currently seeking Workshop Leaders, Presenters, Artists, Vendors, Volunteers, and more! Want to get involved in PolaCon NYC 2025? Additionally, Cameron can be heard giving semi-sarcastic survival advice as the host of Sony Music’s podcast SURVIVE OR DIE TRYING . Cameron was honored with a 2023 Courage Award from the New York City Anti-Violence Project , and has been named a Comic to Watch by The New York Times, Variety, The Guardian, LA Weekly, Time Out Los Angeles, Jezebel, Los Angeles Magazine and Cosmopolitan. Cameron’s 2018 comedy special “Rape Jokes” raised over $100,000 for RAINN, the nation’s largest anti-sexual violence organization, by releasing the special for free and encouraging viewers to donate in lieu of subscribing and watching on a streaming service. The self-financed hour has been praised as “unapologetically hard-hitting, bracingly timely hour” (Vanity Fair), “blistering, masterful, tragic, hilarious” (New York Magazine). A writer from the The Daily Beast who happened to be in the audience hailed the set as “powerful,” “daring and hilarious,” and as “the first great stand-up set of the #metoo era.” In March 2020, Cameron released her first-ever book, “Save Yourself,” a memoir that tackles sexuality, gender and equality – and how her Catholic upbringing prepared her for a career as an outspoken lesbian comedian in ways the Pope never could have imagined. The book, published by Grand Central Publishing became an instant best seller. 7:00pm Doors / 7:30pm Show $20 GA (mixed seated / standing) Ages 21+ FAQ All Advance and Door tickets are Mixed Seating and Standing. Join us on May 4th in the backyard as we boil up some crawfish and all the fixings! We'll be doing four seatings beginning at 3PM. Tickets are timed and each seating is 1 hour and 30 minutes. Each ticket includes about 3lbs of crawfish, potatoes, corn and cajun sausage as well as a welcome pour of Avinyo Petillant wine. We recommend arriving roughly 5-10 minutes before your start time to receive your pour of Petillant and place any beverage orders before snagging your seat in the backyard to slurp some crawfish and gnaw on some corn cobs. Wines, vermouth, & spritzes will be by our dear friends from De Maison Selections . Information Source: Whoopsie Daisy | eventbrite

magCulture Live NYC25 | 53 Scott Ave

May 4, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Brooklyn
Cultural Experiences
Join us in New York on 4 May for an afternoon of talks designed to mark the changes we are seeing in publishing, marking a new chapter for magazines: the return to print. Hear from people behind some of the most innovative and inspiring publications, and learn how they are using print to share stories and build communities, as focal points for research, and as joyful disruptions of algorythmic control. Taking place at the same Bushwick location as last year, come for the talks, to browse the magCulture pop-up shop, and meet fellow magazine lovers. Can’t get to New York? Follow the entire session with a Livestream ticket. First speakers confirmed: Richard Turley ( Interview , Civilization , Heavy Traffic , Offal and more) Richard is one of the key figures forging the future of magazines. Having made his name with the brilliant reinvention of Bloomberg Businessweek in the noughties, he turned his back on publishing to concentrate on TV and advertising. He has since returned to print, working on a series of projects that make a defining argument for the continued relevance and thrill of print. He’ll be sharing an overview of his career to date, starting with university projects, moving through Bloomberg Businessweek to his current stable of magazines. He is currently editorial and creative director of Interview , last year oversaw the redesign of Rolling Stone , challenges the world of fashion with the self-published Nuts , and designs literary mags Heavy Traffic and Offal . All are fascinating experiments in editorial creativity— Offal , for instance, was designed using Word. He is also a keen observer of the industry and we’re excited to offer him a platform at magCulture Live NYC25 following his particaption in the London edition last year. Maria Dimitrova ( AFM Magazine ) Maria is founding editor of the sexuality and culture magazine AFM , the print magazine recently launched by dating app Feeld. The first issue, launched late last year, was themed ‘Pursuits of Happiness,’ celebrating the many dimensions of desire, sexuality, and relationships with a rich collection of features, non-fiction, poetry and columns. Maria’s writing has appeared in e -flux , Bookforum , London Review of Books , The Paris Review Daily, The Times Literary Supplement , and Tank , among others. Jeppe Ugelvig ( Viscose Journal ) Jeppe is a curator, historian, and cultural critic based in New York City. He is the founding editor-in-chief of Viscose , a journal for fashion criticism and analysis. Each issue adopts a thematic approach that allows it to both reflect and advance the subjects it covers; themes to date have included ‘Text’, ‘Retail’, ‘Trans’ and most recently, for its seventh issue, ‘Scent’. The magazine also appears in a different physical format each issue, according to the theme. Jeppe is also the author of two books: ‘Fashion Work’ (2020) and ‘Commodity Ecumene’ (2024). Daniela Rodriguez ( Superstars Only ) Daniela is a multimedia artist currently living in NYC. She studied Graphic Design at Parsons School of Design and launched her magazine, Superstars Only , in 2021, to poke fun at the New York art scene. It blurs the line between insider and outsider perspectives, hailing the artists it celebrates as superstars. She recently told us, ‘ Magazine is the kind of word that you can close your eyes and imagine; there’s a pre-existing template. Don’t let that template suffocate you when coming up with your own.’ Typical of that spirit, the fifth issue of Superstars Only came with handles, and was titled ‘Bagazine’. Read our interview Daniela here . Nicolas Kemper and Samuel Medina ( New York Review of Architecture ) Nicolas is publisher of, and Samuel editor of, New York Review of Architecture , a tabloid-sized magazine that is, in Samuel’s words, ‘an independent, subscriber-supported publication that believes both in criticism and in architecture’s relevance to the wider culture.’ A vital read, it is also notable for its black and yellow page designs and the rat mascots that scurry through its pages. Nicolas trained as an architect, having worked for architecture and engineering firms in New York and Berlin. He has written pieces for publications including Curbed , AA Files , and Urban Omnibus and teaches at the School of Visual Arts and at the Kean School of Public Architecture. Samuel was previously executive editor of the Architect’s Newspaper and deputy editor of Metropolis . His writing has appeared in numerous publications, including Artforum , The Art Newspaper , and Harvard Design Magazine . Read our interview with Samuel here . We have now organised ten London editions and five New York editions— plus three Zoom editions during the Covid lockdown. What is it about? The day presents the most innovative and creative work in magazine publishing, with editors and art directors uniting to share their thoughts and ideas. We don’t duck the big issues facing print publishing, but neither do we fall for the easy, negative narratives surrounding the industry. magCulture Live is a celebration and reminder of the power of magazine creativity—if you know the MagCulture Journal you’ll have a sense of the scope and focus of the event. Is there a theme to the day? We’ll be celebrating the creativity of the magazine industry, bringing together the publishing community for a session of creative inspiration. Alongside this, the theme ‘A new chapter’ will draw attention to how publishers are establishing new roles for the print magazine. Who is magCulture Live for? The day is aimed at publishing professionals, design and journalism students and graduates, and anyone with a creative curiousity. The ability to develop an editorial voice is in everyone’s hands today via digital channels. Hear from leading editorial practitioners how they are handling this responsibility, and return to work full of fresh inspiration. Who organises magCulture Live? magCulture Live is produced by magCulture, led by founder Jeremy Leslie. Our rallying cry is ‘We love magazines,’ which we express through regular reviews and interviews on our online Journal, by selling the new generation of independently published magazines from our London shop and online, regular podcast interviews and our live events. magCulture Live showcases the best creative editorial projects, with speakers from across the magazine spectrum sharing their work. Join us and be inspired by a series of talks from the people behind today’s most innovative magazines—large established brands, small indie start-ups, print and digital. Each will provide their own unique insight into the role of the magazine in contemporary culture, this year focusing on the theme ‘ The return to print . ’ Our first speakers are now confirmed, with more names to be added in the coming weeks. We look forward to welcoming you to this year’s magCulture Live New York. Information Source: magCulture | eventbrite

Handwriting the Constitution | Old Stone House of Brooklyn

Handwriting the Constitution is a social art project begun in 2017 by artist Morgan O'Hara . It invites people from all walks of life to meet in public spaces to handwrite the US Constitution or other documents written to protect human rights and freedoms. This art practice was created so that people will know their rights, deepen their understanding of laws created to protect these rights, and to help resist negative thinking. To date approximately 2000 people have participated, both nationally and internationally. The goal of this art practice is to encourage people to hold their own Handwriting sessions on a recurring basis; to create a physical and psychological space that explores the practice of concentrated writing as an art form, and a process designed to bring people together in a quiet and calming way, all by focusing on human rights. It has been identified as a powerful and transformative form of activism for introverts. Participants are welcome to work on their own journey through the U.S. Constitution, but are welcome to explore other documents of freedom such as the U.N. Declaration of Human Rights. We will have copies of both documents available for reference. In The Wishbone Kitchen Cookbook, Meredith teaches you to cook like a professional hostess (and have fun while doing it). This is the kind of food to celebrate every season of life; the kind of cooking you don’t start until you’ve made yourself a drink first. Recipes range from 20-minute meals to show-stopping centerpieces, all fit for your next dinner party. Here you’ll find big salads ( Blueberry BBQ Grilled Chicken Salad ) and sharable sammies (the Ultimate Italian ); there are your starters, your grazers, your chatting-with-friends snackers like Hot Crab Dip and Really Good Guac . Serve the Pink Lemon Pasta when friends come over after work or pack up the Farro Broccoli Salad for lunch the next day. Snack on an Heirloom Tomato Galette and veg out on Asparagus Fries with Feta . Your authority on all things seafood, Meredith shows you the easiest way to break down a lobster so that you can use it in a number of recipes like the Lobster Avocado Salad and Wok Lobster . Or how to shuck oysters so you can enjoy them grilled or with a yuzu kosho mignonette. Throw your own Nantucket Clam Bake , why not? With sharp, witty commentary, themed menus, and gorgeous imagery, The Wishbone Kitchen Cookbook will inspire you to rediscover the joy in cooking, romanticize your grocery hauls, and find any excuse to celebrate with friends and family. Meredith Hayden is a chef, recipe developer, and the creator behind Wishbone Kitchen, which started as a recipe blog and has evolved into a multidimensional culinary lifestyle brand.
