NEA Big Read | Moving Poem: Miniature Matchbook Crankie Workshop | SPACE
Jun 10, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
Portland
In Ilya Kaminsky’s Deaf Republic, puppets serve as a form of resistance. As we explore our connections to community and collective action, we invite you to join us for an all-ages workshop that delves into a unique form of puppetry: the crankie. A crankie is a moving panorama or story—an illustrated scroll that is often illuminated from behind. During this workshop we’ll have a chance to build a miniature version using a matchbox. The idea is to explore narratives through imagery, words, or both. Come create your own crankie and discover how this ancient art form works on the miniature scale! All materials are provided. Designed to have a low floor and high ceiling, this workshop is open to all ages and abilities. This event is part of the BIG READ series, presented by SPACE Gallery and Mechanics’ Hall. NEA Big Read is a program of the National Endowment of the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest.

We think the best relationships are forged when we are comfortable, relaxed and free of pressure. Preferring instead to think of the evening as a casual night out where one can truly be themselves. We do not use traditional 'speed dating' offerings such as bells, whistles and name-tags. Instead we focus on creating an atmosphere conducive to meeting others; a great venue, a personable host and a staff to assist.
Upon registration, you'll be sent an email inviting you to login to your mobile ‘Smart-Card’. As the event begins, log-in to your scorecard and let the flirting begin. You'll be able to choose whom you wish to meet again, to what degree you like them and have until midnight to submit your final selections for matching. Once the clock strikes midnight - return to our platform to see your matches. You can also access your profile via mobile, tablet or PC. Our platform isn't an app so it requires absolutely no downloading and can be accessed directly from our website, anytime.
Should you have any questions - feel free to ask away. Take the time before the event starts to settle in - have a beverage if you would like and mingle should you wish. Chat up our Hosts for tips or simply to ask, which direction the bar is in! After being shown to your table, the ladies will remain seated for the duration of the event. The gents move from lovely lady to lovely lady every six to seven minutes. Your mobile scorecard gives you the ability to see all the participants attending your event, upload your picture, make your selections and be notified of your matches all from your phone.
Don't fret about figuring out if the person is the one or the perfect person for you. Consider it the date before the date. If you choose someone and they chose you - it's a match. You will be given each others first name and email address. The rest is up to you.

SOUL VACCINATION
Soul Vaccination remains at the top of the Portland charts, and is one of the tightest Funk & Soul Bands in the PNW. As the Rose City's favorite, Soul Vax infuses the stage with the greatest soul standards, and has been a fixture on the Northwest music scene for over 20 years.
This high energy 12 piece band features Brian Harris on Hammond B-3 and keyboards, along with the precision guitar playing of Mike Doolin and Mark Wyatt. On bass is Grammy nominated producer John Linn, and on drums is Ron Tuttle, always bringin' the funk and groovin' hard. Portland's own Regina K, Porsch Anthony, and Mark Wyatt share their soulful vocal styles. Lewis Livermore and Dave Mills carry the backbone sound of the Soul Vax horns on trumpets, with Ron Regan, Gary Harris, and Timothy Bryson on saxophones.

ANDY STOKES
The legendary Andy Stokes is a name synonymous with soulful, heartfelt music delivered with a silky-smooth R&B style. The singer-songwriter, a two-time inductee to Oregon’s Music Hall of Fame and multiple award winner, is known for his powerful vocals, his multiple Billboard Hits, and his unforgettable live performances. With a career spanning over three decades, he has earned his place as one of the most respected voices in R&B. Often referred to as “The Northwest King of Soul,” Andy’s pure classic vocals have captivated audiences across the globe.
Andy’s ground-breaking hit single ‘Best Day Ever’ blazed up the 2018 music charts and was named one of the year’s top songs by both Billboard and the Independent Soul Charts. Quickly on it’s way to becoming a classic, ‘Best Day Ever’ consistently claims a spot in the top 10 wedding songs on streaming services, and is still in heavy rotation on playlists across the world. Following the success of his first national release, Andy’s independent record label released ‘We on Da Flo’ in 2019 (a collab with Snoop Dogg & DJ Battlecat), ‘Right Now’ in 2019, ‘I Don’t Give A Damn’ in 2022, ‘Turn Back Now’ in 2023, and in 2024 ‘No Better’. All featuring Andy’s powerful vocals and proving to the world what the Northwest has always known—Andy Stokes is the real deal.
Originally from Danville Virginia, Andy got his musical start in Portland Oregon in the 80’s as lead vocals with the funk band Cool’r, signed with A&M, toured worldwide, and has performed with the likes of Jeffrey Osborne, Peabo Bryson, Ro James, SOS Band, George Clinton and many others.
