Creative Quilting with Botanical Fabrics | 951 Aileen St
Jun 13, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
Oakland
Learn the art of quilting through a hands-on workshop that celebrates creative expression with richly hued, botanically dyed fabrics.
In this engaging 1 day workshop, you will learn how to make a quilt!
It may be a small quilt, but it will be mighty—because Maura will guide you through every step of the quiltmaking process.
Join us in this Folk Fibers quilting workshop where tradition meets technique.
In this immersive class, you'll learn the essential skills of quiltmaking—step-by-step, with plenty of guidance and personal tips along the way:
• How to sketch and plan a quilt pattern using graph paper
• Accurate fabric cutting techniques
• Mastering Half-Square Triangles (HSTs)
• Sashing or strips piecing methods
• How to baste a quilt
• Sewing with and through batting
• Using a ¼” foot for perfect seams
• How to bind your quilt beautifully
• And best practices shared directly by the designer
We’re making it easy for you to dive in—
all materials (fabric, batting, and notions)
will be thoughtfully prepared and packaged in a custom kit.
Most pieces will come pre-cut
, so you can focus on the fun of stitching and building your quilt top.
We’ll also email you a selection of
color palette options
before the workshop so you can choose what suits your style best. Are you drawn to a warm or cool color pallet? Your choice!
What you’ll make:
Craft a beautiful and unique quilt top choosing from two classic patterns: 'Shoofly' and 'Old Maid’s Puzzle.
Who it’s for & how it’s taught:
These quilt patterns are created using simple shapes like squares and triangles, making them perfect for both beginners and experienced quilters. Having basic sewing skills is required, such as knowing how to work your sewing machine and sew a straight line.
What techniques will be taught:
In this workshop, you’ll learn essential quilting techniques including sketching and planning quilt patterns on graph paper, accurately cutting fabric, creating half-square triangles (HSTs), and using strip piecing methods for efficient block construction. You'll have the option to machine-piece with a ¼” foot or explore the slower, meditative practice of hand-piecing. We'll also dive into color theory through the use of naturally dyed fabrics, and you’ll learn how to baste, hand-quilt a block, and explore binding basics to finish your work with care.
Creative engagement:
Experimenting with naturally dyed fabric offers a chance to explore and apply color theory through thoughtful color selection and design. As a bonus, artist Lena Wolff will join us as a teacher’s aide to help spark rich conversations around color.
Finishing method:
Once you've completed sewing your quilt blocks, you'll learn how to join them together and assemble a quilt top. The process offers flexibility, giving you the opportunity to personalize your choices and creatively engage with the foundations of quiltmaking.
Community & values:
Come to learn traditional quilting methods with fellow friends who share a passion for quilting , botanical color and sustainable materials.

Should you have any questions - feel free to ask away. Take the time before the event starts to settle in - have a beverage if you would like and mingle should you wish. Chat up our Hosts for tips or simply to ask, which direction the bar is in! After being shown to your table, the ladies will remain seated for the duration of the event. The gents move from lovely lady to lovely lady every six to seven minutes. Your mobile scorecard gives you the ability to see all the participants attending your event, upload your picture, make your selections and be notified of your matches all from your phone.
Don't fret about figuring out if the person is the one or the perfect person for you. Consider it the date before the date. If you choose someone and they chose you - it's a match. You will be given each others first name and email address. The rest is up to you.
