Living with Traumatic Loss: Personal & Theoretical Perspectives | 630 Davis St

Jun 19, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
Evanston
Cultural Experiences
Sally McQuillen, MSW, CADC & Bryn Jessup, PhD (Co-presenters) Join us for a glass of wine or (N/A) and conversation the lovely Gathering Space at Oasis North Shore Downtown Evanston Loss is inevitable. Some losses are more traumatic than others, having not only to do with the nature of the loss itself but also how our personalities and our personal histories shape the meaning of loss. Unexpected loss is inherently traumatic. Grief can be protracted and include a range of symptoms associated with PTSD or other traumatic responses. Grief over unexpected loss is shaped by past experiences with separation and loss, including previous relational trauma. Recovery from unexpected loss is a life-long process, best considered to be a process of living with – not recovering from– loss. Insights from psychodynamic and family systems theories , as well as the new science of relational neurobiology , can help us make sense of traumatic aspects of loss and can help point to a path through loss. The presenters bring to bear both their personal experiences of unexpected loss and their extensive clinical experience of working with individuals and families who are coming to terms with profound, often traumatic losses. Following the informal presentations, there will be discussion with the audience. We offer wine from eco-friendly sources and offer N/A alternatives- always! About the presenters: Sally McQuillen, MSW, CADC , is a psychotherapist in private practice specializing in addiction, grief, and trauma recovery. An avid reader with a double major in writing and dance criticism in college, she began working in public relations and marketing prior to obtaining her master’s degree in social work. Her memoir, Reaching for Beautiful, about the death of her young adult son, is Sally’s first book. She and her husband live on the North Shore of Chicago, where they raised their three children. Bryn Jessup, PhD is the Director of Family Services & Systems at Yellowbrick Treatment Center . He brings a perspective on loss from personal experience of the death of his first wife following a long illness, and offers insights from psychodynamic and family systems theories as well as cutting edge research on loss and trauma from relational neurobiology. Co-hosted by ARC Professional Group and Oasis North Shore.  Learn more: Oasis offers a mentoring community of thoughtful clinicians and flexible rentals of casually elegant offices in an inviting three-office, tree-top level suite ARC Professional Group offers specialized concierge care for complex cases and psychologically-informed Executive Coaching Information Source: Sarah Warren, PhD | eventbrite

No Longer Stuck — Family Constellation Circle | TN25 6SX

Jun 21, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Ashford
Family Events
Family and systemic constellation work is a gentle, embodied process that helps reveal the hidden dynamics behind emotional patterns, relational struggles, and inherited burdens. Instead of focusing only on the individual, this work looks at the wider system — family, ancestry, culture, and events that may be quietly shaping your experience. Using representatives or symbolic objects, we create a “living map” of the issue. As patterns become visible, something begins to shift — bringing clarity, release, and often a deep sense of peace. You don’t need to know how it works to feel its impact. You’ll be guided the whole way. Clients often arrive saying: “I’ve done the work — therapy, mindset, healing — but I still feel stuck.” And they leave saying: “Now I understand. I feel lighter. Something has shifted.” In this session, you’ll be part of a small, supportive circle — either bringing an issue of your own (issue holder) or participating as a representative. No acting, no pressure — just a guided experience of clarity, movement, and quiet transformation. In a constellation, we might explore patterns that feel stuck — in family relationships, romantic partnerships, parenting, grief, identity, or a deep inner conflict. Sometimes the issue isn’t clear — just a feeling of “something isn’t mine,” or “this keeps happening and I don’t know why.” You don’t need to have it all figured out. The process helps bring visibility to what’s been hidden — from inherited burdens to unspoken grief — and allows space for resolution to emerge. You’ll be guided with care, and supported whether you’re bringing your own issue or simply witnessing and participating in the circle. 2 issue holder spaces available 6 representative spaces available What you’ll experience: ✔ A safe, held space for gentle exploration ✔ Powerful insights into your own patterns and systems ✔ The possibility for emotional clarity, release, and movement No prior experience needed. Just come as you are. You’ll be gently guided throughout — with space for reflection, connection, and deep witnessing. Multiple light setups / High-key lighting / Controlling background tone / Multiple lighting ratios across the set ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Workshop Tutor :: Sam Oster From Sam When I was a student doing my photography major at University (Bachelor of Visual Arts), I was very idealistic about 'pure' photography. I thought studio lighting was fake and didn't want anything to do with it. Trying to make a living as a working photographer, I quickly realised how wrong I was. I am now a lighting convert, and have spent decades learning and applying controlled lighting in both studio and environmental shoots. As a stills photographer in film & television, I observed how lighting could craft a mood, tell a story, and describe the subject and its relationship to 3-dimensional space. For the past 30 years I have worked both commercially and creatively, working in the performing arts as well as commercial photography. Along the way I've also taught photography (Tafe SA, University of South Australia, Centre for Creative Photography). I value the journey of discovery that both teaching and learning offer, and I get inspired working with others to explore the photographic image. Alongside my freelance work I also run a studio space. I often see how people who hire the studios struggle with lighting and it reminds me to value my hard-earned relationship with light - I want to inspire and educate others to take control of light and start using it confidently in their work . How to Develop Authentic Self Worth | Lake House

Jun 28, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Ashford
Cultural Experiences
Often we feel that we come up short; that we aren’t good enough, wise enough, or capable enough. When these thoughts arise they can feel very solid as if we’re seeing the “real” us: someone who is stuck, incapable of change, and doesn’t measure up. We then get down on ourself, or even lash out at others to compensate.  Buddha revealed that when we see ourself as not good enough, we are under the influence of delusion, a distorted misapprehension of our nature and our potential. By applying Buddha’s wisdom, we can completely dismantle this misperception and come to identify ourself in the correct way: as someone with an extraordinary capacity for change, who finally can bring benefit to the entire world.  In this half-day course, we will examine Buddha’s teachings that help us recognise, reduce and finally abandon this distorted perception of ourself so that finally we can become the person we truly wish to be. This course is suitable for everyone from complete beginners to experienced meditators. Saturday 28 June 2025 | 10am - 1pm VENUE : Lake House, Maidstone Road, Ashford, TN26 1AR BOOKING ONLINE ESSENTIAL as space is limited. The Porteur 200 | Porteur Cafe

Jun 28, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Hove
Cultural Experiences
Date: Saturday 28 June 2025 Location: Porteur Cafe, 210 Church Road, Hove, BN3 2DJ Whether you're here to smash it round the full course or signing up for your first 100km or 200km off road ride - we've got you covered. Not to blow our own trumpets but the course is sick. It's comprised of our favourite South Downs trails and consists of two loops from Porteur Cafe, one West, one East.  200km participants will start at 6am completing both loops and the 100km people will set off around lunchtime to do the East loop. The plan is that everyone finishes at some stage on the evening for food and prize giving! The GPX of the route will be published soon but rest assured you'll face some spicy hills and your in for a long day out so keep firing the furnace with plenty of carbs.  We'll be recommending resupply points including cafes and shops so keep an eye out for the route guide which will be published nearer the ride. It's not a race but an inclusive event  where everyone is welcome, so don't worry if you've not done an event like this before, there'll be plenty of friendly faces and moral support along the way. The route will be 100% ridable on a gravel bike but a mountain bike would also be a good option. As well as some food at the finish, we'll be giving away some freebies from our sponsors which will be announced soon. Peace ✌️and see you soon  Information Source: Josie & Martin | eventbrite
