London Reads: Yellow Face by R. F. Kuang | University of West London Students' Union
Oct 16, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Ealing
R. F. Kuang's Yellowface is a look at cultural appropriation, racism, and the world of publishing. It follows June, a struggling writer who steals her late friend’s manuscript and passes it off as her own. As her success grows, she faces the fallout of stealing someone else’s story and identity. With themes of privilege, who gets to tell which stories, and the pressures of the literary world, Yellowface is a thought-provoking read. - We'll meet on Wednesday, October 16th at 6:30pm at Coffee Union in UWLSU by the 'Park' entrance. - Whether you have read the whole book, a few chapters or a few sentences you are welcome to join the discussion. Please make sure you can attend if you get a free ticket, if not, please let us know, so someone else can attend instead. Our Instagram: @ldnreadss

Pioneers of Black football | Ealing Central Library
Oct 22, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Ealing
It is commonplace now for Football League clubs to field several Black players, so much so that it scarcely merits comment. But it wasn’t always like that. In the 1960s it was possible for a player to go through his entire career without ever having a single Black team mate or facing a single Black player on the opposing team. That situation changed gradually during the 1970s and 1980s but being a Black footballer could still be a very lonely experience. Join Bill Hern and David Gleave, authors of Football’s Black Pioneers – The Stories of the First Black Players to Represent the 92 League Clubs, as they celebrate some of the men who first broke down barriers, pioneering footballers, men who faced discrimination and racism alone and, in doing so, paved the way for generations to come and changed the face of British football forever.

Feb 12, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Ealing
Join us at Goldsmiths (Cinema, Richard Hoggart Building) for a screening and Q+A between Pauline Black, Julian Henriques & Nirmal Puwar, about Black's life history, the 2-Tone music movement, racism, gender, adoption and cities. In a cinematic and visceral documentary mixing intimate archive and interviews and a storming soundtrack, Pauline Black, lead singer of 2-Tone hit band The Selecter, tells her life story in the context of a difficult upbringing and the 2-Tone music movement in 1979. Looking back, Pauline traces her music legacy, as well as how it is relevant to the world today, pushing the boundaries of gender, politics and racism. Pauline, of mixed Nigerian and Jewish heritage, was adopted into a white family in Essex in the 50’s. Her upbringing was defined by casual racism from within her own family. She went on to build positive routes in the Coventry 2-Tone music scene. The Selecter reflected on working-class life in Thatcher's Britain, their music was social reportage with a commitment to anti-racism and anti-sexism. Contributors in the film include: Arthur ‘Gaps’ Hendrickson, Don Letts, Skin, Damon Albarn, Rhoda Dakar, Lynval Golding, Mykaell Riley, Sonia Boyce and Jools Holland. Trailer https://youtu.be/cbE_8IXYm00 Professor Julian Henriques is convenor of the MA Cultural Studies programme, director of the Topology Research Unit and co-founder of Sound System Outernational research group in the Department of Media and Communications, Goldsmiths University. Julian researches street cultures, music and technologies including those of the reggae sound system. He has credits as a writer-director with the feature film Babymother, a reggae musical, the improvised short drama We the Ragamuffin and as a producer with numerous BBC and Channel Four documentaries; a sound artist with the sculpture Knots & Donuts at the Tate Modern, a founding editor with the Ideology & Consciousness journal and as an author with others Changing the Subject: Psychology, Social Regulation and Subjectivity and the monographs Sonic Bodies: Reggae Sound Systems Performance Techniques and Ways of Knowing, and Sonic Media: the Street Technology of the Jamaican Sound System (forthcoming). Perivale
NOTE: All participants must be over 8 years old and able to swim 30 metres.
These sessions are for those new to kayaking and interested in starting the sport of flat water kayak racing with Ealing Canoe Club.
We will introduce you to the following skills needed to enjoy paddling safely on flat water.
Forward paddling (The correct way)
Stopping
Backwards paddling
Sweep stroke (For turning)
Draw Stroke (For moving your boat sideways)
Self Rescue
We will start you in a stable beginner kayaks and as your skills improve our instructors will assess when you are ready to progress to a racing kayak and to club membership and our regular club group sessions. Gaining the skills needed to start using a racing kayak normally takes about 3 or 4 starter sessions. We will be adding more starter sessions soon.
All our instructors and coaches are volunteers with many years of flat water kayaking and racing experience and enjoy helping and supporting beginners to enjoy and progress in the sport.
WHAT TO WEAR FOR KAYKING:
Always bring a change of clothes and towel as you will get wet. We have changing facilities on-site in our club house.
Suitable Clothing:
Synthetic fabrics such as workout or gym gear are best as they don't absorb much water and therefore don't get much heavier when wet.
Footwear:
Water/beach shoes are best as thinner soles allow better contact with the kayak's footrests which greatly helps in controlling the kayak. Trainers are not recommended as they have thicker soles and are bulkier.
Sandals, Crocs and loose fitting shoes are NOT suitable.
Be prepared for the weather conditions.
If it is sunny, ensure you have a hat and sun screen. If it is cold, windy or raining it's advisable to wear more layers and/or a thin waterproof jacket.

A day retreat for Women!!! " Permission To Be". | Ealing
May 18, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Ealing
Join me for a day womens Retreat!
Together we gather in community to practise sharing in a safe space and the Art of Sacred Listening. To be heard, honoured and witnessed as we give ourselves the freedom and permission to fully feel and express all spectrums of emotions with one another. To Release and let go of all that no longer serves us.
By doing so we are gifting ourselves with presence and we are creating space to grieve and to release, in community.
No matter how big or small, we’ve all experienced some form of loss in our lives. We most commonly associate loss with death.
Grief is the natural response to any loss, loss can show up as:
Collective Loss
Death of a loved one
Loss of Finance/dream/opportunity
Divorce
Loss of a friendship
Moving home
Loss of a pet
Loss of childhood, growing up too quickly
Loss of innocence
Loss of identity
Miscarriage/termination
Loss of a relationship
Loss of a country/home
When we suppress emotion and we avoid grief, we create barriers around our hearts - sometimes learnt as defence - keeping both ourselves and others out. This can hinder our ability to express Love and feel passion.
Vulnerability is not winning or losing; it's having the courage to show up and be seen when we have no control over the outcome. Vulnerability is not weakness; it's our greatest measure of courage. This event offers us an opportunity to express and share our losses, grief and its core emotions: fear, anger and sadness.
We as a collective are currently going through a huge colletive loss, and are not given enough space to BE to RELEASE and to FEEL.
Our natural reaction to any loss is grief, we are conditioned by our societies that grieving, or discussing grief is 'wrong' and 'taboo'. That we must simply just get on with it and ‘move on’. The problem with this is our losses accumulate. We shut down our hearts and overtime start to experience anxiety, sadness, depression and isolation.
I have created a Day for women, because I feel we are the ones who are always holding and giving to others, and I would like to give you one day for yourself to be held and to recieve.
What to expect
-Discussing what grief is.
-The core emotions of grief
-Bypassing of grief
-Physical symptoms of grief.
-Heart opening meditation, to drop out of the mind and into the body, to create space for our vulnerability.
-Sharing circle to release
-Somatic movement.
-Grief Ritual
-Sound Healing using Crystal Bowls
-Light lunch, water and herbal tea will be included (vegeterian)
-Collective prayer
-Poetry
-Journaling
-Integration
What to bring
Please bring along with you a pen, a journal and dress in anything you feel most comfortable in.
We ask that you bring something with you for the day, it could be a photo, mementoes, a poem, a song, one word, you could sit in silence, a drawing, an object, a short memory. A positive insight to your loss. Anything meaningful to you. (don't think about it too much). A representation of your love. (this is optional)
-
Limited spaces are available to maintain an intimate safe ceremony.

Meet Hana:
Hana is a space holder, specialising in grief and loss, a Sound and meditation faciliator.
After many years of experiencing a variety of losses from a young age and throughout life, during meditation and prayer she always knew there was a deeper purpose behind her pain.
After years of all the emotional pain manifesting into her body, finding inner peace in nature and a love for animals this lead her into becoming a plant based Chef, trained at the Blue Lotus Cookery school. Allowing her to build the connection with the mind, and body. Using food as medicine.
Having lost her brother to cancer, this lead her to creating monthly ceremonies named Permission To grieve, and seeing clients 1:1 covering all types of loss, not just death. Creating brave spaces for people to be seen, heard and witnessed in the fullness of their experience of loss. Her approach is based on the assumption that you are the expert of your own grief and her work focuses on guiding you back home to yourself so that you can find meaning in your life in the “after”. Her guidance comes from both education and personal experience which allows her to deeply relate to client’s experience of grief and loss. Developing a love and passion for self development after reaping the benefits of 10 plus years worth of teachers from all walks of life, Hana felt called to create something to give back to others.
After many years of grief of a variety of losses, Hana journeyed on through to vibrational medicine, having graduated from Tim Wheater and Cherub Sound Therapy training, using Sound to reconnect back with loved ones, calming the nervous system and creating a safe space for people to have a deep relaxing mediative experience through Sound. Infusing poetry and chanting from a Sufi Practice. Hana understood that healing grief needs to be expressed and released through the mind body and soul, she uses various modalities and ancient wisdom, and is also a End of Life Carer graduated from SoulCompanions School.
