Embodied Aesthetics in the Immersive City | University of London Institute in Paris
Oct 3, 2024 (UTC+1)ENDED
Ealing
Join Professor Christoph Lindner, Vice-Chancellor and President of the Royal College of Art, for a talk on the digital-spatial strategies that cities like London are using to revivify urban public spaces in the wake of the pandemic. Drawing on findings from his recently published book Aesthetics of Gentrification, Professor Lindner argues that many cities worldwide are experiencing a rise in embodied aesthetic practices – rooted in digital/immersive forms of urbanism – following the restrictions of lockdown and social distancing. Far from being unique to London or the post-pandemic moment, these practices have a long, deep history tied to the neoliberal project of post-industrial renewal. The difference now is that the after-effects of the pandemic, combined with new digital technologies of simulation and immersion, are making it possible to remake cities in more extreme and divisive ways. As cities recover from the pandemic and urban publics return to the shared spaces of the city, there is urgency in understanding these transformations and their effects on contemporary urban life.

J’Accuse…! Sculptures by Nicole Farhi | Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery
Mar 19–Jun 15, 2025 (UTC)ENDED
Ealing
Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery presents a new exhibition of sculpture by artist and designer Nicole Farhi. Farhi will display 25 cast ciment fondu busts, each hand painted with acrylic paint and depicting victims of miscarriages of justice across multiple countries around the world over the past 125 years. Running from 19 March to 15 June 2025, the exhibition portrays victims whose wrongful convictions have shaped legal history.
The exhibition takes its name from J’Accuse…! — Émile Zola’s famous open letter that exposed the wrongful conviction of Captain Alfred Dreyfus in France in 1898. Inspired by Dreyfus’s case, Farhi has spent the past two years researching and sculpting figures from around the world who have been unjustly accused, from Timothy Evans, whose wrongful execution helped abolish capital punishment in Britain, to Andrew Malkinson, who spent 17 years in prison before his conviction was overturned in 2023, leading to the resignation of Helen Pitcher, Chair of the Criminal Cases Review Commission.

Jan 24–Apr 28, 2024 (UTC)ENDED
Ealing
The exhibition presents an array of Irwin’s new works, including colourful, multi-layered screenprints and etchings, complemented by sketches and preparatory studies that offer insights into her meticulous creative process.
Drawing inspiration from Pitzhanger’s history as Sir John Soane’s country residence, where he entertained guests, customers and close friends, Irwin’s artworks playfully question the social norms of Soane’s era. Through the diverse shapes, sizes, and colours of Irwin’s cast of characters, the exhibition presents a dialogue on the range of personalities in social gatherings and the evolution of social structures and hierarchies over time.
The exhibition highlights Irwin’s innovative use of materials, as seen in her Peeps, a series of human-like 3D figures. Previously displayed outdoors at Trinity Buoy Wharf in 2022, these figures represent a bold exploration of form and colour. The exhibition at Pitzhanger will feature two newly commissioned Peeps in brushed metal, showcasing her evolution in sculptural experimentation. This exhibition is curated by Svetlana Panova.

Fowokan George Kelly (March 2024)
About Fowokan George Kelly
Born in Kingston Jamaica in 1943, Fowokan migrated to the UK in 1957, attending secondary school in Brixton where, among his teachers, was Stuart Hall (the late Professor). He became a sculptor after working as a musician, playing with several bands, including Symande. Whilst working as Jimmy Cliff’s sound engineer on his first tour of Nigeria, Fowokan encountered the wealth of sculptures from Benin and Nok. Returning to London, he decided to give up music and taught himself sculpting techniques. As his work gained attention and the quality of his technique improved, he adopted the Yoruba name, ‘Fowokan’, meaning ‘one who works with his hands’. Fowokan has exhibited widely including in the iconic group exhibitions of Black British Artists of the 1980s and 1990s and in their important group exhibition held at the Guildhall Art Gallery in 2015. By Invitation, Fowokan became a member of the Society of Portrait Sculptors, exhibiting in their annual exhibitions, as well as that of annual summer exhibitions held at the Royal Academy. Among his international exhibitions are the Cuban Biennale and the Studio Museum Harlem. Fowokan's works are held in private and public collections in the UK, Europe and the US. Fowokan also expresses his creativity through poetry, prose, photography and videography. His writings have been published and vignettes of his video documentaries have been shown on BBC Breakfast with several on YouTube. His works have featured on television: BBC (Artsnight 2014 and When I came to Britain part 4: 2004) and Chanel 4 (The Empire Pays Back 2005). The biography , by Margaret Andrews, was published in January 2022.
