Then we look forward to seeing you at Oil Painting Club.
These untutored monthly sessions at the Draw studio will encourage you to develop your personal practise and keep your enthusiasm for oil painting going. Monthly 5am Writing Club | Kemptown Bookshop
Jun 4, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Brighton
Where better to write than a bookshop with a cafe? When better than at 5am? Join other local writers from 5am on the first Wednesday of every month to write as the sun comes up. Great coffee and loose-leaf tea available to kickstart your writing morning. We'll open the shop at 5am and you're welcome to join us then, or at anytime after that. You can stay until we open to the general public at 9.30am. Tickets are limited to 20 as we only have so many chairs and table space. While the majority of writers sit upstairs in the cafe, we also have chairs and tables on the ground floor and in the cosy basement, so feel free to spread yourself about throughout the bookshop - wherever you feel comfortable. Tickets cost £10 (including VAT) and in addition to including your first coffee or pot of tea, you will also get a 30% discount on any other drinks or snacks. Feel free to bring a snack with you, so long as it's not smelly! The local bakery opposite opens at 8am ish if you want to grab a pastry from them. If you're using a laptop, please have it fully charged for your writing session as we only have one plug socket. This is a silent write session - there's no workshopping, just the motivation of being around other writers as the sun comes up. We can promise you a magical atmosphere. Why do we do this? Author and bookshop owner Cathy Hayward has regularly risen at 5am to write and she wondered if other local writers did the same. We started the 5am Writing Club in the bookshop as a trial on the Summer Solstice 2023. They've proved popular so they're now a monthly fixture and we'll keep running them as long as people keep turning up. If you have any questions, or feedback, email cathy@kemptownbookshop.co.uk Tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable just because of the admin involved and Eventbrite's high fees - sorry.

Ballet Central 2025 - The Dance Space, Brighton | South East Dance at The Dance Space
Jun 6, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Brighton and Hove
Following a highly successful tour in 2024, Ballet Central returns in 2025 with a brand-new programme of classical ballet and contemporary dance.
The repertoire includes Frederick Ashton’s miniature masterpiece
Foyer de danse
(1932)
.
Animating Edgar Degas’ iconic paintings and pastels of Paris Opera Ballet dancers, this will be the first staging of the ballet in over 90 years, following its recreation by Ursula Hageli for The Frederick Ashton Foundation. Principal Character Artist of The Royal Ballet, Kristen McNally, presents a vibrant modern ballet with a glorious new musical composition by Central’s Tabor Music Director, Philip Feeney.
FEAST
allows the audience to catch a glimpse of a colourful community where conversation is punctuated and interactions explode with character.
In contrast, Ballet Central presents contemporary works by Dickson Mbi and Thick & Tight. Thick & Tight’s theatrical work
Keeping Up with the Apocalypse
will combine dance, theatre and mime. The piece is a meditation on greed, vanity and the absurdity of a species bringing about its own undoing
.
Dickson Mbi's work depicts the energetic ambition and perseverance required to pave new pathways in dance theatre and performance. Drawing from the Earth's vibrations and warmth, this piece explores the practices of ritual and shared human experience.

Team Domenica was born to fill that gap, believing that everyone deserves the chance to aspire to a career and the independence and confidence that comes with it.
Today, Team Domenica runs cafés across Brighton & Hove; they partner with over 60 local businesses and have just announced a brand-new site at Pavilion Gardens. Through their Supported Internship Programme, 80% of their young people have attained paid work, showing what’s possible with the right support.

An art form that uses textile materials like fabric, yarn, thread, and other fibres as the primary medium to create artistic and decorative objects, encompassing many techniques. It is one of the oldest forms of art in history and has played a part in practical and decorative man-made objects for hundreds of thousands of years. Presented by Lake Macquarie Dobell Festival The Lake Macquarie Dobell Festival is an annual month-long arts festival inspired by the life and work of esteemed artist Sir William Dobell. A former resident of Wangi Wangi, Sir William Dobell is known for his passion, innovation, experimentation and creative excellence. The festival includes a range of events around Lake Macquarie including workshops, presentations and exhibitions addressing various aspects of Dobell's life and work. Image artworks: Flinders Ranges Grass Trees & Pier Group courtesy of artist. About the presenting artist
Lorraine Parker is a trained teacher and Quilt Art Judge with the British Isles; 2019. She has entered several juried Quilt Art Exhibitions in Australia and overseas and sold many pieces of her work. Her teaching and sharing of her skills are strong on her agenda. In her work, Lorraine aims to capture the essence of our diverse environment visually and to communicate this. Her background in design influences the underlying structure of her work. She has a fascination with colour and loves placing and manipulating textiles that evoke a sense of nature, place, time or timelessness and to transport the viewer into their own experience. Lorraine believes that a work is successful if it connects and “speaks” to the viewer, evoking emotion. Lorraine's curiosity in using the many forms of textile materials; fibre, yarn, fabric and non-woven and her experimental approach to finding new techniques have resulted in an eclectic, broad range of work, both small and large. Using techniques of applying colour through surface dyeing, painting and printing as well as manipulation of yarns and fabric combined with free motion machine stitching add texture and expression to Lorraine's work.

13th June - Brighton - The Golden Thread Tour - SAMANA | Brighton Unitarian Church
Jun 13, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Brighton and Hove
The Road Records presents
: 'The Golden Thread' - an evening of profound music and poetry by
Samana
held in The Unitarian Church in Brighton on June 13th.
The evening will unfold with a poetry reading set against cinematic landscapes, accompanied by evocative instrumental soundscapes. The poems themselves are an alchemical excavation—an introspective odyssey rich with profound poetic and personal resonance. They delve into the essence of consciousness, the elusive realms of dreams, and the sacred connections that intertwine our minds, our psyche, and the land. This is an homage to the intimate, inseparable threads that shape both our inner and outer worlds.
Samana will then perform songs from their eponymous album, alongside new, never-before-heard material.
Their music confronts the most profound aspects of the human condition, embracing both its weight and its transcendence. It invites us to reclaim our time, our essence, and our place within the natural world, urging a journey beyond our limitations. Oscillating between melancholic ballads and spiritual awakenings, Samana’s sound guides listeners through cinematic landscapes, invoking ancient beliefs, revolution, healing, the unseen, and the profound depths of love, loss, and death. Born from a nomadic existence and steeped in solitude, Samana’s work draws heavily from the philosophy of dreams, the subconscious, and the transformative power of improvisation. Each song pulses with ethereal energy and unfiltered emotional honesty, offering a direct passage to the spirit—stripping away illusions and revealing the raw, shamanic force that connects us to the very core of our being. This is music that speaks to the soul, igniting the heart and awakening the inner sanctum of our existence.
"Our mission is to craft a transcendental sonic journey that dissolves the divide between performer and audience, enveloping all in the intimate embrace of a shared space. The music becomes a living tapestry, a binaural soundscape that resonates within the very walls we inhabit, guiding each listener into a deep, interconnected dreamscape where the ethereal and emotional realms intertwine. Performed within the sacred circle of the round, the experience immerses the soul in a symphony of vocals, bodhrán, gongs, bells, piano, electric guitars, and double bass. The Golden Thread tour weaves together the unseen, connecting spirit, subconscious, emotion, and transcendence in a seamless, timeless flow."

Creative Writing Masterclass: Life writing and imagination | Kemptown Bookshop
Jun 13, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Brighton and Hove
What role does the imagination play when we are writing about lived experience? If we agree that the life-writer’s task isn’t simply to record events but to write about them in a way that will engage our reader in character, setting and story, then we need to bring our imagination to the work.
Evoking remembered people or conversations or happenings in a vivid way in our writing can feel conflicting for life-writers so during this masterclass (mistressclass!) we’ll discuss ethical considerations and through a combination of in-class writing exercises and the study of extracts from published texts, we’ll explore techniques to enable us to tell our stories creatively and with integrity.
The session will be run by Hannah Vincent. Hannah is a novelist, short story writer and playwright. Her first novel,
Alarm Girl
was published in 2014 by Myriad Editions and her second,
The Weaning
was published in 2018 by Salt. Her short story collection
She-Clown and Other Stories,
published by Myriad in 2020, was shortlisted for the Edgehill Prize and the Manchester Fiction Prize. Her stage plays have been produced by among others, The Royal Court Theatre and The Royal National Theatre Studio and her radio play
Come to Grief
won a 2015 BBC Audio award. She has a PhD in creative and critical writing from the University of Sussex.
The session will be held in the cosy surroundings of Kemptown Bookshop in Brighton and will run from 10-4pm with an hour for lunch. The venue is in the heart of Kemptown Village, on sveeral major bus routes and has plenty of options for lunch.
The workshop is part of a series of one-day masterclasses held in the summer They are open to existing students on the Creative Writing Programme and other writers looking to improve specific areas of their writing craft. You can book onto as many workshops as you choose.
The summer masterclasses are:
