Behrang Karimi | Morena di Luna
May 31–Sep 7, 2025 (UTC)
Hove
Karimi uses a range of methods, including monotypes, wood- and linocuts and gouache; combined, they create a lively dialogue between the artist and his work. Landscapes and views are often merely hinted at – humans are the true heart of Karimi’s work, appearing as portraits, in classic poses, as lying and seated nudes, alone and in groups. The room around them is diffuse, sometimes suggested by a doorway flooded with light, other times by another person appearing at the edge of the picture. Two people face one another, rigid as statues, separated by a light expanse of color, of water? His figures seem delicate and brittle, as does the scenery they move within. They all portray small episodes within a unique moment – like the worm crawling towards the apple – that disappear almost before we have fully grasped their significance.

Creative Writing Masterclass: Life writing and imagination | Kemptown Bookshop
Jun 13, 2025 (UTC+0)
Brighton and Hove
What role does the imagination play when we are writing about lived experience? If we agree that the life-writer’s task isn’t simply to record events but to write about them in a way that will engage our reader in character, setting and story, then we need to bring our imagination to the work. Evoking remembered people or conversations or happenings in a vivid way in our writing can feel conflicting for life-writers so during this masterclass (mistressclass!) we’ll discuss ethical considerations and through a combination of in-class writing exercises and the study of extracts from published texts, we’ll explore techniques to enable us to tell our stories creatively and with integrity. The session will be run by Hannah Vincent. Hannah is a novelist, short story writer and playwright. Her first novel, Alarm Girl was published in 2014 by Myriad Editions and her second, The Weaning was published in 2018 by Salt. Her short story collection She-Clown and Other Stories, published by Myriad in 2020, was shortlisted for the Edgehill Prize and the Manchester Fiction Prize. Her stage plays have been produced by among others, The Royal Court Theatre and The Royal National Theatre Studio and her radio play Come to Grief won a 2015 BBC Audio award. She has a PhD in creative and critical writing from the University of Sussex. The session will be held in the cosy surroundings of Kemptown Bookshop in Brighton and will run from 10-4pm with an hour for lunch. The venue is in the heart of Kemptown Village, on sveeral major bus routes and has plenty of options for lunch. The workshop is part of a series of one-day masterclasses held in the summer They are open to existing students on the Creative Writing Programme and other writers looking to improve specific areas of their writing craft. About Abi Farrell Abi Farrell was raised in rural Oxfordshire on a soundtrack of vocal powerhouses spanning the likes of Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Candi Staton and Carole King. Named 'an artist on the rise.. a considerable talent' by Blues and Soul Magazine, Abi is known for her effortlessly pure voice and lyrical dexterity, which is equally at home creating moving, introspective ballads as it is high-energy, empowering anthems. Lyrically, her music explores themes of identity, self-esteem, self-worth, empowerment, gender equality, mental health and social mobility. With an appeal that transcends generations, Abi's voice and songwriting explore the experience of navigating the world as a fiercely ambitious young woman from a working-class background. Abi's music has been consistently embraced by the UK & international soul scene since releasing a string of singles in collaboration with Big AC Records, including 'I Will See You Through', 'Empowered', 'Don't Follow Me' and 'Stepping Out Of Your Shadow', which were produced by Mitch Ayling of The Milk and pressed to limited edition 7 vinyl. Her releases have been championed by Craig Charles on BBC Radio 2 and BBC 6 Music, who praised Abi's writing 'proper soul for the 21st century'. 'Don't Follow Me', a social commentary on misogyny, was premiered by Robert Elms on BBC Radio London and subsequently led to Abi performing the track on BBC Radio 4's Loose Ends. Though Abi has been captivating live audiences since her teenage years, she has recently opened stages for Izo Fitzroy, Dee C Lee and Stone Foundation, has headlined the BBC Introducing stage at Oxfordshire's The Big Feastival, and has performed at venues such as Pizza Express Jazz Club, Pizza Express Live Holborn, The 100 Club, The Cavern Club Liverpool, Servant Jazz Quarters, Colours Hoxton, Oslo Hackney, and The Louisiana, Bristol. In addition to her own artistry, Abi has performed backing vocals for many of her peers: Nick Corbin, Emma Noble, Carmy Love, The Milk, PM Warson, Denver Cuss and James Bone, and continues to lend her voice to music she loves. This show will mark Abi's first ever headline show in Brighton. It will celebrate the arrival of her brand new single '47 Days' and further new music due to arrive this summer. Masterclass: Timeless Tales : making meaning of myths and writing new ones | Jubilee Library
Jun 14, 2025 (UTC+0)
Brighton
Tales – folk, fairy and epic – have a timeless quality. They are islands of memory and insight if we give them time to talk to us. The first half of this masterclass will let us look at how memory works and the place of imagination; making meaning of myths. We will work with myths from selected cultures, about women and seasons. While myths are universal, what makes them distinctive and can we recall local ones? The second half of this masterclass is to engage in writing. We will work with metaphor and its power in creative writing with our unique imagination and signature. Please bring, wear or carry an object that is precious to you to the masterclass. The session will be run by Vayu Naidu. Vayu did her doctoral research on oral traditions and performance storytelling. Her fiction combines myths and epics and contemporary situations in a tapestry that unveils the human condition, our strength through our vulnerability. Creative writing masterclass: writing crime | Jubilee Library
Jun 15, 2025 (UTC+0)
Brighton
This masterclass will set you firmly on your way to being a crime writer. Your tutor – a former police chief superintendent and now crime writer – will guide you through the nature of the genre and its sub genre, understanding the world of crime, villainy and policing, then we will get on to the actual writing. We will work through how to develop gripping characters, settings, how to plot, write authentic dialogue, and craft twists, arcs and endings. Come prepared for a blistering day and armed with all the questions you’ve always wanted to ask someone who’s done it for real and now makes it up for fiction. The session will be run by Graham Bartlett. After thirty years of policing, whereby Graham Bartlett became Brighton and Hove police’s chief superintendent, a senior homicide detective and a public order and firearms commander, he is now a best-selling crime fiction and non-fiction author, and police and crime advisor. His debut non-fiction, Death Comes Knocking, written with Peter James, was a Sunday Times Top Ten bestseller, and Peter and Graham followed this up with the critically acclaimed Babes in the Wood. Since then, Graham has had three solo crime novels published; Bad for Good (Sunday Times Top Ten Best Seller, Winner of Crime Fiction Lover Editors’ Choice Award 2022 and Nominated for Specsavers Debut of the Year 2022), Force of Hate, and City on Fire. As a police procedure and crime advisor, Graham works with over 200 authors and TV writers (including Peter James, Elly Griffiths, Anthony Horowitz, Ruth Ware, Mark Billingham and the BBC), helping them inject authenticity into their work. The session will be held at the Jubilee Library in Brighton and will run from 11-5pm with an hour for lunch. Shaping the future of safety in the Uk | Barclays Eagle Labs Brighton
Jun 16, 2025 (UTC+1)
Brighton and Hove
On June 15th at 6pm, we’re launching the
bobu
Safety Forum, and if you want to be part of shaping the future of safety this is where you need to be.
This is not a “talk about safety” session. it’s a game changer. It’s where YOU get to drive the conversation that will shape the future of safety.
Real safety? It’s inconvenient. It’s uncomfortable. But it’s necessary. The numbers speak for themselves:
• Over 60% of hospitality workers have witnessed sexual harassment in the workplace—and most of it goes unreported. (HOSPA)
• Venues and businesses in the UK lose £1.6 billion a year due to harassment and unsafe environments. (UK Gov)
These aren't just statistics. This is the reality of our industry.
The
bob
u
Safety Forum is where businesses like yours will step up and lead the conversation.
Real safety means doing the work. It means confronting uncomfortable truths. It means leading the way in making sure people are heard, seen and protected.
What to expect at the bobu Safety Forum:
Straight Talk, Not Small Talk
We’re cutting through the noise. Expect raw, honest conversations about what’s
really
happening in venues and businesses right now—and what needs to change. No sugar-coating, no corporate fluff.
Your Voice, Your Power
This isn’t a panel where you sit quietly and listen. This is a forum,
you’re part of the conversation
. Share your experiences, challenges, and ideas. Be seen. Be heard.
Building the Future Together
We’re not here to hand you a manual. We’re here to build a new standard of safety with you. You’ll leave with ideas, momentum and a chance to shape how venues and businesses across the UK move forward.
Connection Time
Meet other businesses and venues who actually give a damn. Build your network with people who are done with ticking boxes and ready to do real work.
Because safety isn’t just a conversation, it’s a revolution.
Complimentary drinks and pizza sponsored by Eagle Labs

Glue Gun presents: Carnival of Souls | The Rose Hill
Jun 24, 2025 (UTC+1)
Brighton and Hove
After barely escaping a horrific car accident that claimed the lives of her two companions, Mary moves to Salt Lake City, hoping for a fresh start. But plagued by visions of a silent, menacing figure and feeling increasingly disconnected from reality, she begins to unravel. Is any of this really happening? And why is she inexorably drawn to the abandoned carnival on the shores of the Great Salt Lake?
An uncanny masterpiece of low-budget horror,
Carnival of Souls
' dreamlike atmosphere and dark Americana prefigure the work of directors like David Lynch.
“
Watch
Carnival of Souls
and wonder about its influence on others. Think about
Night of the Living Dead
,
Blue Velvet
and
Eraserhead
.”

Brighton and Hove
Twice a year tutors teaching on the Creative Writing Programme share their work with their students. It's a chance for our students to socialise with one another, meet other tutors teaching on different courses and hear work from experienced authors. Join us on the evening of Thursday 26th June 2025 at Kemptown Bookshop to hear a selection of readings from your tutors. These two tutor readings complement the existing programme of student and alumni readings which are run in-person and online throughout the year. The ticket price includes refreshments. If you're at student or alumni and would like to read from your work at future events, please contact Cathy to book a slot in one of the sessions - cathy@creativewritingprogramme.org.uk
