May 5, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
Nanaimo A
At Open Air Learning, our Outdoor Learning Program for ages 7-9 offers a perfect blend of nature exploration and hands-on learning. With weekly themes that tap into subjects like science, art, and environmental awareness, children engage in slightly structured lessons that foster creativity and critical thinking. This unique approach allows kids to connect with the natural world while developing essential skills, including problem-solving, collaboration, and self-confidence.
Whether building habitats, exploring ecosystems, or working on creative projects, participants will thrive in an enriching outdoor environment that nurtures curiosity and growth. This program encourages children to enjoy the outdoors while gaining practical knowledge, all in a fun and supportive setting. Join us for an adventure where play and learning come together to inspire lifelong skills.
Note: The Outdoor Learning Program is different from our Forest School.
While Forest School focuses on self-directed play and exploration, the Outdoor Learning Program offers slightly more structured activities with themed lessons that blend outdoor exploration and hands-on learning. Both programs encourage growth, but in different ways, allowing families to choose the approach that best suits their child.

“Awards are nice, naturally, but to dig what Brownman is doing, you’ve got to see him live. I had a chance to do just that over the summer when Brownman fronted his killer trio ... I came away with a blown mind. This guy’s got chops galore, soul to match, and a sense of phrasing that recalls many of the greats, but suggests itself to be his own.”
- Buffalo News
----
In recent years, when not touring the globe the Brooklyn based multi-award-winning Trinidadian-born trumpet player BROWNMAN ALI -- the last trumpet player for iconic jazz-hip-hop group Guru's Jazzmatazz -- spends much of his artistic time in the exploration of modern “chordless” jazz -> music produced without a chordal instrument (guitar or keyboard). He had previously explored this tonal quality for a decade with his highly lauded latin-jazz group CRUZAO, and more recently with his heavily decorated & now internationally acclaimed Miles Davis influenced BROWNMAN ELECTRYC TRIO. Taking a similar trajectory as the acclaimed 2009 debut release "Juggernaut", this highly energized bombastic trio’s 2013 sophmore release “Gravitation: A Study In Freefall” -- on Brownman’s own label Browntasauras Records -- shot to number 4 on the iTunes USA jazz charts and was declared “the new standard in electric-jazz” by National Public Radio (NPR) in New York City. Among a long list of awards & accolades, the trio would win an International Independent Music Award for "Jazz-Funk Album of the Year", 3 Toronto Independent Music Awards for "Jazz Group of the Year" and a National Jazz Award for "electric jazz group of the year".
“The trio folds aspects of Black American Music into a chordless jazz framework”, states Brownman. “When we’re not playing originals, we often take classic standards from the 30s through the 50s and re-imagine them as if they were written today and being produced by, say, DJ Premier. The end result is something that hopefully sounds relevant in today’s musical paradigm, but still resonates with the history and lineage of the jazz tradition. And yeah - you’ll hear a lot of Miles Davis’ influence in that resulting sound”.
The ensemble itself is aptly described by CODA magazine: “Brownman’s powerful electrified trio captures the essence of the later years in Miles Davis’ life, his electric period, without imitation. Brownman’s ELECTRYC TRIO is uniquely his own, yet echoes with the sounds of ‘Bitches Brew’ and ‘In a Silent Way’ right down to Miles’ use of electronics while still managing to stay grounded in the sounds of today. Clearly paying apt tribute to Brownman’s NYC mentor Randy Brecker, they are a truly impressive and energized modern jazz outfit.”

ABOUT BROWNMAN ALI
=========================
Heralded as “Canada’s preeminent Jazz trumpeter” by NYC’s Village Voice, Brownman Ali - born on the small Caribbean island of Trinidad, & schooled in NYC - is a multiple award-winning NYC-schooled protégé to his teacher, Grammy-winning trumpet legend, Randy Brecker. He tirelessly leads 8 unique ensembles of his own including the internationally acclaimed Miles Davis influenced BROWNMAN ELECTRYC TRIO, and the award-winning CRUZAO latin-jazz quintet. All these ensembles record under Brownman's own much lauded BROWNTASAURAS RECORDS label, established in 2009. In high demand in the studio world with over 400 CD appearances to date, Brownman delivers stylistically authentic horn playing over a wide range of styles from bebop to hiphop having worked with the likes of Guru's Jazzmatazz (replacing Donald Byrd in that primordial ensemble), Mos Def, KRS-1, Quincy Jones, Paul Simon, Jay-z, Missy Elliot, Mingus Dynasty Big Band, Gary Bartz, Chucho Valdes & far too many more to name here. He is considered to be one of the most unique and provocative improvising trumpet players in the nation today and is widely regarded as a vanguard for the evolution of Jazz in Canada.
A highly decorated player, his awards & accolades include 2 National Jazz Awards (with 11 nominations over the years), 10 Global Music Awards, Montreal Jazz Fest's "Grand Prix Du Jazz" award, a CBC Galaxie Rising Star award, a SOCAN composers award, an International Independent Music Award for "Album of the Year", 3 Toronto Independent Music Awards for "Jazz Artist Of The Year" (9 nominations), multiple JUNO nominations, winning the International Song Competition (ISC), a Black Canadian Award nomination for "Jazz Musician of the Year", an induction into the WHO'S WHO IN BLACK CANADA, a Caribbean Music Award nomination, a Black IMPACT Award, a BRAVO! channel documentary on his life, NOW magazine naming him "Toronto's Best Jazz Musician", CBC Radio Canada named him "one of the most recorded trumpet players in Canadian history", NPR in New York calls him "the new standard in electric jazz", the Trinidad & Tobago Consulate General awarded him with a citation for being a "Distinguished National of Trinidad" and he has been listed by Air Canada as one of the "Top 10 reasons to visit Toronto".

how you're doing
.
Through conversations that dig beneath the surface, we’ll explore fresh perspectives on familiar challenges, share strategies to thrive at work and in life, and develop meaningful relationships that lift each other up.
What to expect:
6:00-6:15: Arrival & Settling In

Whether you’re leading a team, a project, or the change you wish to see in the world, it’s normal to feel overwhelmed, exhausted, or even frustrated at times — especially when you care deeply about your work.
You’re not alone. Connecting with other leaders can help you quiet doubts and reignite your spark.
During the

In the
Community Exchange
, we’ll reflect on the insights from the circle, notice any shared themes, and offer ideas, resources, or support based on what emerged. This is a space for collective wisdom and mutual growth.
The Women’s Leadership Circle centers the experiences of women and gender-diverse people. While all genders are welcome, we aim to foster curiosity, understanding, and peer allyship.

Their songs explore the unique and layered lives of heroes and villains: the visionary Finns of Sointula, the notorious Dunsmuirs, labour martyr Ginger Goodwin, the ghost of Clarence Ballance and the infamous Brother XII of De Courcy Island.

More About The Struggle
In 2018 the Mamalilikulla, Kwikwasut'inuxw Haxwa'mis and 'Namgis First Nations reached an agreement with the Province of BC to phase out salmon farm tenures in their territories in the Broughton Archipelago. In December 2020 then-Federal Fisheries Minister Bernadette Jordan pledged to phase out salmon farming in the Discovery Islands over an 18-month period, ending in June 2022. In Nov 2022, the
shíshálh First Nation removed 8 salmon farms. In 2023 the Gwawaenuk First Nation closed the four salmon farms in their territory and in 2024, the Nuchatlaht closed two salmon farms near Tahsis. While nearly 50% of BC salmon farms are now closed, many farms remain in operation along the west coast and northern tip of Vancouver Island and on the Central Coast. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau promised his government would phase out all ocean net pen salmon farms by 2025, then pushed it back to 2029.
Since then, the three Norwegian-based salmon farming companies have filed four lawsuits against the open pen closures, and against the Minister of Fisheries for losses. Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) continues to fail in its responsibility to protect wild salmon from the effects of viruses from the remaining salmon farms. This means that while salmon are protected in some territories, they are at risk of infection as they migrate north, and can transport the industrial salmon farm pathogens into spawning grounds as they migrate south. In the areas where salmon farms have been removed, wild salmon survival has sky-rocketed at levels biologists did not think possible.
In 2024 there were incredible salmon returns on the east coast of Vancouver Island and adjacent mainland coast, contrary to the very low returns forecasted by DFO. These salmon directly benefited from the removal of disease and lice-laden fish farms on their out-migration path. We know this can happen all along the B.C. coast, but devastating disease transmission and outbreaks will continue until
all
salmon farms are removed. It’s for these reasons we’re heading back to court.
Alexandra Morton who has published extensively on impact of salmon farms on wild salmon says the actions of ‘Na̱mǥis
“are the single most important effort in the fight for wild salmon in B.C today.”
Come find out why. And how you can
help us win
this fight once and for all! This is about all of us, the orca, eagles, bears, wolves, coastal forests and our future.

The Well Tree
Join Heartwood for an all-ages, immersive, participatory journey through song and story. The Well Tree is a three-person musical, accompanied by a ‘crankie’ - an illuminated, papercut, hand-cranked scroll. It is an original 'singing story' about wild journeying and remembering kinship -- the tale of a young woman moving beyond the fog of isolation to meet songbirds, snails and ancient trees as she travels through these unraveling times, finding her way home. The three members of Heartwood – Heidi Wilson, Willy Clemetson, and Sarina Partridge – are the actors, musicians and the crew that runs the crankie (created by papercut artist Jennifer Jones) – and the audience will be invited in to help sing pieces of the story.
The afternoon workshop will be in the church hall (entrance on Wesley St.)
The evening musical will be in the sanctuary, the prize venue of Nanaimo's singing culture, with its marvellous acoustics.
