Svend Bayer Wood Firing 6-Day Course £895 | Oxford Kilns
Jun 4, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Oxford
Woodfiring courses in 2025 with Svend Bayer at the University of Oxford. £895, all equipment will be provided. SAVE YOUR PLACE NOW £50 Your Eventbrite booking allows you to book a place. Once you have booked a place we will contact you to arrange a payment link for the balance of your course payment. Courses Run: 23-27 April & 4 May 4-8 & 15 June 24-28 September & 5 October This six-day course offers a unique opportunity to learn from Svend Bayer, a master of wood-firing with decades of experience. Participants will work with our newly constructed single-chamber kiln, built by Svend in 2023, to explore the complexities and nuances of wood-firing. Over the course, you’ll fire your own work alongside pieces from fellow participants, experiencing firsthand the transformative effects of wood ash, flame interaction, and high-temperature firing on ceramic surfaces. The course is structured to provide a comprehensive understanding of the skills required for long-duration, high-temperature firings. The main session runs for five days, from Wednesday to Sunday, covering essential techniques such as kiln loading, wood preparation, and firing management. After a week of cooling, participants return for the final day on the following Sunday to unload and analyze the results, discuss firing outcomes, and prepare the kiln and wood for future use. Svend will lead the course alongside Dr. Robin Wilson, project director of Oxford University Kilns, with support from experienced assistants. This is an exceptional chance to deepen your expertise and engage with the artistry and unpredictability of wood-firing in a collaborative and educational environment. Wednesday/Thursday – Loading, wood preparation, organising your firing team Friday/Saturday/Sunday – Firing Second Sunday – Unloading and kiln maintenance What to bring: 20 or more small to medium-sized bisque pots in stomneware clay, and any high-firing glazes you wish to test. It is very important that you use clays and glazes appropriate to a cone 12/high stoneware firing. If in doubt, you are always most welcome to ask questions about clays and glazes before the course. In this kind of wood firing, much of the pleasure is gained by the interaction of the clay and ash with the raw surface of the clay body, so glazing is not always preferable or necessary. Documenmt what clays you have used, and what glazes, if any you bring. The position of each pot within the large kiln makes a real difference to the results. Learning to document, understand and control the effects of a large woodfired kiln on the pieces you put in form a large part of this course. Of course, we can’t guarantee to fire all of your pots, but we will fire as many as possible. There is free camping on site, with hot showers and kitchens, or you can arrange your own accommodation locally. There are a large number of local AirB&Bs. Limited accommodation at our fieldstudy centre in the Woods is also available for those booking early in advance. Usually firing teams cook and eat communally on site, which we will arrange nearer the time. For help and advice, contact Dr Robin Wilson of Oxford Kilns.

Jamie Catto THE OLD FOREST PATH | Blackwell's Bookshop
Jun 7, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Oxford
James Catto is a British musician, video director, photographer, and script editor. He was a founding member of Faithless, before leaving in 1999 to form 1 Giant Leap. Jamie will be performing songs and reading from his new book for children. The Old Forest Path In an enchanted forest live magical fairies who delight in music and dance, however they always follow the old path through the woods, having been told to do so will keep them safe. It happened one afternoon, when the sun was casting its hypnotic patterns through the branches above, that from somewhere out of sight, a new and unheard music reached the delicate ears of those magical creatures. It began as a flute but then turned into a pipe. It moved like a drum but then pulsed like a stamp. The music reached high and yet still rumbled down low and it moved them all as it filtered so invitingly from its origin unknown. One fairy is bold enough to leave the path in search of the source of this beautiful sound.

Rowe Irvin and Gurnaik Johal in conversation with Kaye Mitchell | Blackwell's Bookshop
Jun 9, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Oxford
We are thrilled to partner with the University of Manchester's Centre for New Writing to welcome Rowe Irvin and Gurnaik Johal to the shop to discuss their stunning debut novels LIFE CYCLE OF A MOTH and SARASWATI. The authors will be in conversation with Kaye Mitchell. Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm Tickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book. About LIFE CYCLE OF A MOTH: Maya and Daughter live in complete isolation in a secluded woodland, their days aligned with the light and changing seasons, a complex pattern of routine and ritual. Daughter has never questioned the life her mother has chosen for them; the life that has meant she's never met another soul, or known anywhere except their forest home. But one day, when Daughter is almost sixteen, a red-haired stranger steps into the confines of their territory. Where there was always two, suddenly there are three - and the carefully constructed world that Maya has built to keep her daughter safe may not survive it. About SARASWATI: Centuries ago, the holy river Saraswati flowed through what is now Punjab. Many dismiss this as myth, but when Satnam arrives in his ancestral village for his grandmother's funeral, he finds water in the dried-up well behind her house. The discovery sets in motion a contentious scheme to unearth the lost river as an act of Hindu nationalist pride. The river changes the course of Satnam's life, and those of six others. As legends and histories resurface, the distant relatives - from a Canadian eco-saboteur to a Mauritian pest exterminator to a Bollywood stunt double - are brought together in a rapidly changing India. Ambitious, moving and brimming with folklore, Saraswati is a tour de force from one of Britain's most feted young writers. About the authors: Rowe Irvin’s writing has been published by Prototype, Dancing Bear Books, the Oxford Review of Books and the Bristol Poetry Institute. She recently released an artist’s book limited edition of narrative poems in collaboration with the painter Georg Wilson. She has been shortlisted for the Bridport Poetry Prize and the Bath Short Story Award, and longlisted for the Alpine Fellowship Writing Prize, the Fish Anthology Poetry Prize and the Bath Flash Fiction Award. Gurnaik Johal is a writer from West London born in 1998. His 2022 collection We Move won the Somerset Maugham Award and the Tata Literature Live! Prize. Its opening story won the Galley Beggar Short Story Prize. Saraswati is his debut novel. THE OTHERS - An evening with Sheena Kalayil | Blackwell's Bookshop
Jun 19, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Oxford
Join us for an evening with Sheena Kalayil to celebrate the launch of her novel THE OTHERS, where a love triangle plays out against the backdrop of the fall of the Berlin Wall. The event will consist of live music, a talk about her writing process and inspirations, and a reading from the book. Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm Tickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book. About the book: It is 1989, and in a small Baltic city in East Germany, the Deutsche Demokratische Republik, three young people from vastly different backgrounds become friends. Armando is a factory worker from Mozambique, Lolita is a medical student from India, and Theo is an East Berliner who dreams of being a writer. When Armando and Lolita make a grisly discovery, they find themselves caught up in the politics of Theo’s homeland more than ever before. While a quiet revolution sweeps through Eastern Europe, and the Berlin Wall teeters, the three find themselves entangled in a poignant love triangle which threatens their futures. As the world order shifts, their three lives are bound together in a web of love, lies and fears, leaving each irrevocably changed. About the author: Sheena Kalayil is a critically acclaimed Manchester-based author and teacher. THE OTHERS is Kalayil's fourth novel, continuing her profound examination of untold stories from the crossroads of history and human experience. Her third book, 'The Wild Wind', drew inspiration from her own nomadic upbringing shuttling between India, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Kalayil's debut novel, 'The Bureau of Second Chances', announced her as a major new literary talent, winning the prestigious Writers' Guild Award for Best First Novel and being shortlisted for the Edward Stanford Prize for Fiction with a Sense of Place. With a lifetime of experiences teaching around the world, from Nepal and Mozambique to Tunisia and Venezuela, Kalayil brings a truly global perspective to her writing. Since 2002, she has called the UK home, now teaching at the University of Manchester while penning rich, immersive narratives that transcend borders. Tickets are £4.00. Kristen Poole with Philip Pullman and David Fickling | Blackwell's Bookshop
Jun 19, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Oxford
Readers of Philip Pullman’s trilogiesHis Dark Materials andThe Book of Dust know that these novels speculate on parallel worlds and multiple spatial dimensions. But how do they also consider questions of time and history? Kristen Poole explores Pullman’s engagement with history in her bookPhilip Pullman and the Historical Imagination: Seventeenth-Century Literature,Science, and Religion in His Dark Materials and The Book of Dust. In particular, she shows how Pullman draws theoretical ideas and narrative modes from the fascinating period of early modern England. As a storyteller, Pullman takes up concerns about meaning, language, and interpretation in ways that echo various philosophies of the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Pullman’s curiosity about science and contemporary theoretical physics leads him to weave elements into his stories that bear striking parallels to various developments of the early scientific revolution. And as a writer keenly attuned to the poetics of John Milton and the narrative structures of Edmund Spenser, Pullman shares these authors’ investment in the sounds of language and the shape of plot and character. In this conversation, Kristen Poole and Philip Pullman will discuss the influence of seventeenth-century ideas on His Dark Materials andThe Book of Dust. How do early modern emblem books prompt ideas about what it means to read and interpret? What is Pullman’s particular attraction to this period of history? How do ideas about alchemy enter his stories, introducing philosophies about matter and our place in the universe (or multiverse)? What prompted the shift from Milton to Spenser as inspiration for the first and second trilogies? In addition to considering how Pullman drew from the early modern in crafting his novels, we will also think about how the ideas in the novels help us to see the past in a new light, recognizing the two-way traffic of history and story. The conversation will be moderated by David Fickling, Philip Pullman’s publisher. Kristen Poole Kristen Poole is a scholar of early modern English literature whose research focuses on the nexus of literature, religion, and the history of science. She has published extensively on Shakespeare and Milton. She received a Ph.D. from Harvard and a Master of Sacred Theology from United Lutheran Seminary, Philadelphia. She holds the Ned B. Allen Professor of English at the University of Delaware (USA) and is currently a Visiting Fellow at Exeter College, Oxford. Philip Pullman Sir Philip Pullman is the author of the award-winning trilogy of novels His Dark Materials, which have been adapted for stage, screen, and graphic novels. The third volume of the companion series,The Book of Dust, will be coming out later this year. His other writings include the Sally Lockhart mysteries and his collection of essays Dæmon Voices: On Stories and Storytelling. He was the 2023 recipient of the Bodley Medal.

Sponsors: Jericho Wawa & El Exquisito magazines. Jericho Wawahas a Blake themed edition this Trinity Term and invites you to an end of term talk by philosopher Mark Vernon, on the topic of William Blake and the Power of the Imagination. Encounter one of the greatest poets and artists in English literature. Learn how we can comprehend his kaleidoscopic ideas. Jericho Wawa's Trinity edition features a leading article by Mark Vernon about William Blake, which this talk will elaborate on.
Mark Vernon takes Blake at his word. He uses his vivid writings, arresting artworks and fascinating life to illuminate Blake's Imagination-centred worldview. A worldview formed in a tumultuous era of war, discontent, rapid technological change, and human estrangement from nature.
In response Blake declared love and liberty, but also said that he conversed with prophets and angels. He was powerfully, if unconventionally, religious. If we take this seriously--not easy, in secular times--then Blake can help us to unlock the transformative power of the Imagination.
This in-person event will take place at the historic Pusey House, Oxford, providing an exemplary setting for an exploration of Blake's visionary work. Reserve your spot now! Mark's new book, available for sale & signing at the event, is written for both longstanding fans and unfamiliar readers, Awake! reveals Blake as an invigorating and hopeful guide for our modern age.
Jericho Wawa invites you to a house party in Jericho following this event, with the opportunity for discussion with the speaker. Details provided at the talk. The Jericho Wawa Trinity issue - featuring Mark's article on Blake - will be available for purchase there.
This event is generously sponsored by El Exquisito. You are invited to read their interview with Mark, published in Spanish, at Mark Vernon Interview Reviews
‘The best overall study of Blake I have encountered in a very long time. Rich and energetic, it brings together detailed readings of familiar (and not so familiar) poems with sharp contemporary application, and the deep insights of a therapist well-seasoned in finding a path through dreams. A joy to read, well worthy of its extraordinary hero.’ -- Rowan Williams, former Archbishop of Canterbury
'At this moment, we need the voice of Blake―however strange and wild it often seems―more than ever. He is one of those untimely prophets who have the power to make us see reality anew in every epoch. Vernon is a particularly sensitive reader of the great man, one who knows how to communicate Blake's vision with rare clarity.' -- David Bentley Hart, philosopher, cultural commentator and author

Gateways to Ecstasy ~ A 5Rhythms Workshop | South Oxford Community Centre
Jun 21–Jun 22, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Oxford
WHAT IS THE WORKSHOP ABOUT? “Ecstasy is an egoless, timeless state of being. It’s a state of total alignment and unity. Unity of body, heart, mind, soul, and spirit. It is what we need to heal our psychic dismemberment. We can’t access it if we are divided, body against mind, mind against heart, or any other way. We can only reach ecstasy through wholeness. One way to experience being whole is through meditation. The purpose of meditation is to still the mind and surrender to the moment. The fastest way I’ve found to still the mind and be aware of the moment is to move the body.” ~Gabrielle Roth, Maps to Ecstasy. Gabrielle Roth wrote an entire book on ecstasy and how to get there through the map of the 5Rhythms. Contrary to popular belief, ecstasy is not just confined to the rhythm of Lyrical or Chaos, but can be found in all of the rhythms individually, and when danced as a Wave. In this 2-day workshop, we will dive into the transformative power of the 5Rhythms practice and explore different gateways to ecstasy through dance, through each of our senses, through presence, and through connection with the self and with others. PREREQUISITES No experience or prerequisites required. Just your curiosity, commitment to be present, and an open heart. WHEN AND WHERE Saturday 21st June, 12:30pm to 6:30pm. Sunday 22nd June 2025, 12pm to 6pm Oxford, UK. COST £125 (£110 concession) Early bird until 21st May: £110 (£95 concession) Super Early bird until 21st April: £95 (£80 concession)

POOR GHOST! Gabriel Flynn in conversation | Blackwell's Bookshop
Jun 23, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Oxford
We are thrilled to welcome Gabriel Flynn to the shop to discuss his debut novel, POOR GHOST!, a razor-sharp story of literature, class and family. Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm Tickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book. About the book: When Luca drops out of his prestigious PhD programme and moves back home to Manchester, he thinks he'll take some time to consider his life choices: the failed love affair that ended in a disastrous holiday and embarrassing exit, the pursuit of an academic life that gave him nothing but a strong sense of failure.
In need of money, and still convinced the literary life might be for him, Luca takes on a job as a ghost writer: Andy, who has progressive MS, wants Luca to write his life story. Luca's own father had MS and eventually took his own life - making the assignment a full immersion in the dark parts of his childhood Luca has never really dealt with. Luca has his own ideas about what Andy's book should be like - but he'll have to learn how to curb his dreaming, if he ever wants to get paid.
While his love of literature and intellectual ambition might have got him so far away from his childhood in Manchester, Luca is grappling with what it means to try to go home again - how far where you're from shapes you, and how difficult your parent's past is to shake off. About the author: Gabriel Flynn was born in 1991 and grew up in Manchester. His writing has appeared in Five Dials, Best British Stories, and the White Review, whose short story prize he was shortlisted for in 2020. He lives in Berlin. If you cannot make the event but would like a dedicated copy of the book, please email events.manchester@blackwell.co.uk or call us on 0161 274 3331.
