FAST-FIRE KILN FIRING COURSE June 13,14,15 Our Fastfire Kilns Course offers the perfect introduction to wood-firing ceramics, giving you hands-on experience with wood management and the process of loading and firing wood kilns here at Oxford. We encourage you to bring bisque-fired stoneware pots to test your glaze recipes and see the unique effects wood-firing can create on your own work. Throughout the course, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to deepen your understanding of wood-firing techniques, gain insights from our experienced tutors, and share knowledge with fellow participants. These courses are also a great way to get to know our facilities and connect with the wider wood-firing community. Our site is home to a variety of wood-fired kilns, which we use for both firing courses and private hire by experienced firing teams. If you’re interested in building your own kiln, we also run specialized kiln-building courses. For accommodation, we offer free on-site camping with access to hot showers and a field kitchen. If camping isn’t your preference, you’ll find plenty of nearby Airbnbs to choose from. For those booking early, we also have limited accommodation available at our field study centre in the woods. Communal cooking and dining are a cherished part of the firing experience, and we’ll organize these closer to the course date to ensure everyone feels part of the community. We run these courses throughout the year. Our first 3 dates for 2025 are 17-19 April, 2-4 May and 13-15 June. Please ask if you have any further questions. They both helped to establish new scientific methods and ideas, which led to fascinating discoveries in palaeontology, including the first ever dinosaur to be named to science.

Welcome to our Two-Day Linocut Workshop at 50 Hurst Street Studios 14 & 15 June 2025 On this workshop you will learn all the skills needed to make single colour and multicolour linocut prints. We will cover all parts of the process from image composition, image transfer and carving techniques, to taking a print. With the skills you learn on our course, you should be able to continue to exploring linocut printmaking at home. This course is taught by Robin and Rosie from The Wytham Studio. We only take a maximum of 6 on each courses so you will receive a lot of 1:1 attention. No prior experience is necessary but if you do have some experience, because of our high staff to student ration we will be able to tailor what you learn to what your needs are. We aim to get you working on 2 prints over the course, a black and white print on the first day to get to grip with the basics of the process, and a multi-colour image on the second days so we can look at how to work with colour. We can be flexible on this depending on your previous experience and intentions. We provide all materials you will need on the course, all we ask you to bring are ideas for your prints. Please do ask us if you have any questions about the course. We are running this course on March 15,16 and June 14,15. Information Source: eventbrite

Oxford Symphony Orchestra Summer Concert | The Sheldonian Theatre

Oxford

Orchestra
Sheldonian Theatre, Saturday 14 June 2025, 7:30pmSchumann - Genoveva Overture Bartók - Violin Concerto no.2 Brahms - Symphony no.4 Stefan Simonca-Oprita violin Robert Max conductor In Schumann's only opera, Genoveva, drama ensues after a failed attempt to seduce Genoveva, the wife of Siegfrid. Mirroring the storyline, the overture follows the same dramatic trajectory, with music moving through ominous and wrenching moods, arriving at eventual majesty and triumph. Bartók's second violin concerto was written for Zoltán Székely, his long-standing recital partner. This concerto is infused with styles from Hungarian folk music, and is very much a celebration of life, and is played for us by Stefan Simonca-Oprita. Despite featuring great warmth and lyrical beauty, Brahm's 4th symphony has a definite tragic character. The finale is based on a passacaglia: a sequence variations on a bass pattern. It ends with a bleak but thrilling conclusion, cementing its place as a firm favourite in the classical repertoire. Information Source: Oxford Symphony Orchestra | eventbrite

Beethoven: The Revolution Begins, Cristian Sandrin, piano | Holywell Music Room

“Bold and courageous” – Classical Voice America “Sandrin expresses the sounds with infinite subtlety” – Nieuwe Noten Netherlands A brave new world – BBC Music Magazine An incredibly talented pianist – Piano News Germany Join acclaimed pianist and Kettner Concerts co-artistic director Cristian Sandrin for an extraordinary evening showcasing Beethoven's complete Opus 2 Piano Sonatas—the young composer's bold declaration and his emerging unique voice within the musical world of Vienna. Written to challenge the mastery of Mozart and Haydn, these three ambitious sonatas marked Beethoven's explosive debut in the world of piano sonatas. Experience the revolutionary spirit of young Beethoven as his unique voice emerges through brilliant technical passages, dramatic emotional contrasts, and surprising innovations that would forever change classical music. Witness the complete cycle performed in the elegant surroundings of the National Liberal Club—a rare opportunity to trace the evolution of Beethoven's genius across three remarkable works that announced the arrival of one of history's greatest musical revolutionaries. Programme: L van Beethoven: Sonata No. 1 in F minor, Op. 2, No. 1 AllegroAdagioMenuetto: AllegrettoPrestissimoThe F minor sonata opens the cycle with a restless energy. Its first movement, inspired by Mozart's K. 457 sonata in the same key, features dramatic silences and sudden dynamic contrasts. The lyrical Adagio provides momentary respite before the traditional Menuetto and the fiery final Prestissimo, which pushes the technical boundaries of piano playing for its time. Sonata No. 2 in A major, Op. 2, No. 2 Allegro vivaceLargo appassionatoScherzo: AllegrettoRondo: GraziosoThe A major sonata expands in scale and ambition. Its brilliant opening movement demonstrates Beethoven's mastery of Classical forms while hinting at new directions. The profound Largo appassionato moves with the dignity of a slow march, while the Scherzo replaces the traditional Menuetto with greater rhythmic playfulness. The elegant Rondo finale showcases Beethoven's gift for graceful melody. Sonata No. 3 in C major, Op. 2, No. 3 Allegro con brioAdagioScherzo: AllegroAllegro assaiThe cycle culminates in the virtuosic C major sonata, the most technically demanding of the three. Its expansive first movement rivals a concerto in brilliance, while the serene Adagio explores rich harmonic territories. The playful Scherzo leads to an exhilarating finale that pushes the performer's technique to its limits, highlighting Beethoven's own legendary prowess as a pianist. Biography: Born into a family of musicians from Bucharest, Cristian Sandrin has been surrounded by classical music all his life. His frequent visits to the historic Romanian Atheneum concert hall and his attendances at the prestigious Enescu Festival shaped his musical aspirations from early childhood. Years later, he would have his own debut at the Atheneum at the age of 13. Cristian is especially devoted to the Classical and Romantic repertoire. His passion for Mozart’s piano concertos led him to direct from the keyboard several concertos during Summer Festivals at the Royal Academy of Music, as well as for the official opening of the Angela Burgess Recital Hall. From 2018–2020 he was privileged to tour the UK as an artist of the Countess of Munster Recital Scheme. Additionally, He is a scholarship holder of the Imogen Cooper Music Trust benefiting from her unique one-to-one guidance and mentorship since 2017. He graduated in 2019 from the Royal Academy of Music, receiving a DipRAM, MMus later being part of the prestigious Advanced Diploma programme. In 2023 he has been invited to become the co-Artistic Director of the much-admired Kettner Concerts which are held in the David Lloyd George Hall of the National Liberal Club, Rachmaninov’s favourite London recital room and the venue where he performed his European farewell concert. In 2021 Cristian travelled to Romania for his debut with the acclaimed George Enescu Philharmonic performing Mozart's K503 Piano Concerto in C major at the country's foremost music venue: The Romanian Atheneum.Since 2020, Cristian has performed challenging solo programmes including Beethoven's last three sonatas and Bach's Goldberg Variations in famous venues across Europe from Berlin’s Konzerthaus, the Radio Hall in Bucharest to London’s LSO St Luke’s and Holywell Music Room Oxford, Sinfonia Smith Square and Sala Puccini in Milan. In July 2025 Cristian will have his debut at Beethovenhaus in Bonn, Germany. His debut CD Correspondances (Antarctica Records 2022) featuring music by Ravel, Enescu and Cyril Scott has been highly acclaimed in Europe and accross the Atlantic: the German Magazine Piano News selected it as the CD of the Month whilst the American Record Guide named it “the highlight of this month’s listening. Cristian’s performances have been broadcast on major radio and TV stations in Europe and Canada, from Bayerische Rundfunk, to Rai Tre, Radio France Musique, Radio Romania Muzical and Stingray Classica. The Genius Myth The tortured poet. The rebellious scientist. The monstrous artist. The tech disruptor. You can tell what a society values by who it labels as a genius. You can also tell who it excludes, who it enables, and what it is prepared to tolerate. Taking us from the Renaissance Florence of Leonardo da Vinci to the Floridian rocket launches of Elon Musk's SpaceX, Helen Lewis unravels a word that we all use - without really questioning what it means. Along the way, she uncovers the secret of the Beatles' success, asks how biographers should solve the Austen Problem, and reveals why Stephen Hawking thought IQ tests were for losers (before taking one herself). And she asks if the modern idea of genius - a class of special people - is distorting our view of the world. Helen Lewis Helen Lewis is a British journalist who works as a Staff Writer at the Atlantic Magazine. She is a regular on the Private Eye podcast, Page 94, and is the co-host of Strong Message Here with Armando Iannucci on BBC Radio 4. Her history of Feminism, 'Difficult Women' was a Sunday Times bestseller. Information Source: Blackwell's, Broad Street Oxford | eventbrite

Francis Wilson ELECTRIC SPARK with Henry Oliver | Blackwell's Bookshop

Electric Spark The word most commonly used to describe Muriel Spark is 'puzzling'. Spark was a puzzle, and so too are her books. She dealt in word games, tricks, and ciphers; her life was composed of weird accidents, strange coincidences and spooky events. Evelyn Waugh thought she was a saint, Bernard Levin said she was a witch, and she described herself as 'Muriel the Marvel with her X-ray eyes'. Following the clues, riddles, and instructions Spark planted for posterity in her biographies, fiction, autobiography and archives, Frances Wilson aims to crack her code. Electric Spark explores not the celebrated Dame Muriel but the apprentice mage discovering her powers. We return to her early years when everything was piled on: divorce, madness, murder, espionage, poverty, skulduggery, blackmail, love affairs, revenge, and a major religious conversion. If this sounds like a novel by Muriel Spark it is because the experiences of the 1940s and 1950s became, alchemically reduced, the material of her art. Francis Wilson Frances Wilson is a critic, journalist and the author of numerous biographies and works of non-fiction including Literary Seductions, The Courtesan's Revenge and The Ballad of Dorothy Wordsworth, which won the Rose Mary Crawshay Prize in 2009. Svend Bayer Wood Firing 6-Day Course £895 | Oxford Kilns

Woodfiring courses in 2025 with Svend Bayer at the University of Oxford. £895, all equipment will be provided. SAVE YOUR PLACE NOW £50 Your Eventbrite booking allows you to book a place. Once you have booked a place we will contact you to arrange a payment link for the balance of your course payment. Courses Run: 23-27 April & 4 May 4-8 & 15 June 24-28 September & 5 October This six-day course offers a unique opportunity to learn from Svend Bayer, a master of wood-firing with decades of experience. Participants will work with our newly constructed single-chamber kiln, built by Svend in 2023, to explore the complexities and nuances of wood-firing. Over the course, you’ll fire your own work alongside pieces from fellow participants, experiencing firsthand the transformative effects of wood ash, flame interaction, and high-temperature firing on ceramic surfaces. The course is structured to provide a comprehensive understanding of the skills required for long-duration, high-temperature firings. The main session runs for five days, from Wednesday to Sunday, covering essential techniques such as kiln loading, wood preparation, and firing management. After a week of cooling, participants return for the final day on the following Sunday to unload and analyze the results, discuss firing outcomes, and prepare the kiln and wood for future use. Svend will lead the course alongside Dr. Robin Wilson, project director of Oxford University Kilns, with support from experienced assistants. This is an exceptional chance to deepen your expertise and engage with the artistry and unpredictability of wood-firing in a collaborative and educational environment. Wednesday/Thursday – Loading, wood preparation, organising your firing team Friday/Saturday/Sunday – Firing Second Sunday – Unloading and kiln maintenance What to bring: 20 or more small to medium-sized bisque pots in stomneware clay, and any high-firing glazes you wish to test. It is very important that you use clays and glazes appropriate to a cone 12/high stoneware firing. If in doubt, you are always most welcome to ask questions about clays and glazes before the course. In this kind of wood firing, much of the pleasure is gained by the interaction of the clay and ash with the raw surface of the clay body, so glazing is not always preferable or necessary. Documenmt what clays you have used, and what glazes, if any you bring. The position of each pot within the large kiln makes a real difference to the results. Learning to document, understand and control the effects of a large woodfired kiln on the pieces you put in form a large part of this course. Of course, we can’t guarantee to fire all of your pots, but we will fire as many as possible. There is free camping on site, with hot showers and kitchens, or you can arrange your own accommodation locally. There are a large number of local AirB&Bs. Limited accommodation at our fieldstudy centre in the Woods is also available for those booking early in advance. Usually firing teams cook and eat communally on site, which we will arrange nearer the time. For help and advice, contact Dr Robin Wilson of Oxford Kilns. Theater
James Catto is a British musician, video director, photographer, and script editor. He was a founding member of Faithless, before leaving in 1999 to form 1 Giant Leap. Jamie will be performing songs and reading from his new book for children. The Old Forest Path In an enchanted forest live magical fairies who delight in music and dance, however they always follow the old path through the woods, having been told to do so will keep them safe. It happened one afternoon, when the sun was casting its hypnotic patterns through the branches above, that from somewhere out of sight, a new and unheard music reached the delicate ears of those magical creatures. It began as a flute but then turned into a pipe. It moved like a drum but then pulsed like a stamp. The music reached high and yet still rumbled down low and it moved them all as it filtered so invitingly from its origin unknown. One fairy is bold enough to leave the path in search of the source of this beautiful sound. Information Source: Blackwell's, Broad Street Oxford | eventbrite

Cultural Experiences
Join us at The Pantry UK in Uxbridge as part of Family Business Fortnight Retail Day for an audience with Luke Consiglio. Their journey started by taking on a small sandwich shop on a busy high street which had been established since 1987. With big ambitions for the business Luke and the team started to change things straight away. Within the first 6 months they were catering for companies and events that they never thought they could attract in such a short space of time. Nearly 15 years later, they've continued to broaden the business and now supply some of the country's most recognisable companies with various services such as corporate buffets, staff lunches and even cater for their major event days where they have fed up to 20,000 people! With further expansion into schools, they currently provide over 15,000 daily meals for a wide variety of schools across the borough and beyond. Paul Andrews will be hosting the session and interview with Luke in their demonstration kitchen about the incredible entrepreneurial journey that he has been on and there will be an opportunity to ask questions and to network with fellow guests over a coffee and bite to eat. Numbers are limited and early booking is recommended. Information Source: Family Business United | eventbrite

Literary Arts
We are thrilled to partner with the University of Manchester's Centre for New Writing to welcome Rowe Irvin and Gurnaik Johal to the shop to discuss their stunning debut novels LIFE CYCLE OF A MOTH and SARASWATI. The authors will be in conversation with Kaye Mitchell. Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm Tickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book. About LIFE CYCLE OF A MOTH: Maya and Daughter live in complete isolation in a secluded woodland, their days aligned with the light and changing seasons, a complex pattern of routine and ritual. Daughter has never questioned the life her mother has chosen for them; the life that has meant she's never met another soul, or known anywhere except their forest home. But one day, when Daughter is almost sixteen, a red-haired stranger steps into the confines of their territory. Where there was always two, suddenly there are three - and the carefully constructed world that Maya has built to keep her daughter safe may not survive it. About SARASWATI: Centuries ago, the holy river Saraswati flowed through what is now Punjab. Many dismiss this as myth, but when Satnam arrives in his ancestral village for his grandmother's funeral, he finds water in the dried-up well behind her house. The discovery sets in motion a contentious scheme to unearth the lost river as an act of Hindu nationalist pride. The river changes the course of Satnam's life, and those of six others. As legends and histories resurface, the distant relatives - from a Canadian eco-saboteur to a Mauritian pest exterminator to a Bollywood stunt double - are brought together in a rapidly changing India. Ambitious, moving and brimming with folklore, Saraswati is a tour de force from one of Britain's most feted young writers. About the authors: Rowe Irvin’s writing has been published by Prototype, Dancing Bear Books, the Oxford Review of Books and the Bristol Poetry Institute. She recently released an artist’s book limited edition of narrative poems in collaboration with the painter Georg Wilson. She has been shortlisted for the Bridport Poetry Prize and the Bath Short Story Award, and longlisted for the Alpine Fellowship Writing Prize, the Fish Anthology Poetry Prize and the Bath Flash Fiction Award. Gurnaik Johal is a writer from West London born in 1998. His 2022 collection We Move won the Somerset Maugham Award and the Tata Literature Live! Prize. Its opening story won the Galley Beggar Short Story Prize. Saraswati is his debut novel. If you cannot make the event but would like a dedicated copy of one of the books, please email events.manchester@blackwell.co.uk or call us on 0161 274 3331. Our event format is usually a 45 minute discussion between the author and interviewer, followed by a chance for audience members to ask questions.
