Make a Twisty Juniper Bonsai | Darts Hill Garden Park - Maple Activity Center
Jun 22, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
Surrey
This is a hands-on course where you can make your first bonsai and all the materials are provided! It’s a fun and interactive time, with all the steps demonstrated so it is easy to follow along. You will do a transformation on a young and flexible tree and walk away with your first bonsai and a good introduction on how to do bonsai.
Junipers in June
Bonsai workshops are always a little different from one another depending on the tree species and the time of year. The feature species for this workshop is Shimpaku Juniper (Juniperis chinesis v. shimpaku), a classic outdoor tree for bonsai. We will talk about why junipers are so popular, how to keep them healthy, and the great features the species has for looking like an old and interesting bonsai tree. They respond well to pruning, wiring and bending at this time of year, so that is the work we will focus on.
Bonsai is the art of growing and shaping miniature trees in containers. Come and learn how to make your own with Darren Melhus from the BC Bonsai Society.
Darren's knowledge includes art concepts, horticultural considerations, and specialized techniques. You can expect to leave feeling grounded and confident even if you are new to the hobby.
Bring your gloves and everything else is provided!
This class is hands-on in a covered outdoor space, so dress for the weather in clothes that you don't mind getting a little dirty and prepare to enjoy an afternoon of education and creativity!
Absolutely no experience is required.
Workshop space is limited to 10.
Park in the reserved parking lot off 168th Avenue.
