An Evening of Flamenco | The Sound Room

Aug 8, 2025 (UTC-7)
Oakland
Arts
Flamenco, which UNESCO recently recognized as part of the World’s Intangible Cultural Heritage, is a complex art form incorporating poetry, singing (cante), guitar playing (toque), dance (baile), polyrhythmic hand-clapping (palmas), and finger snapping (pitos). It often features the call and response known as jaleo, a form of “hell raising,” involving hand clapping, foot stomping, and audiences’ encouraging shouts. Nobody really knows where the term “flamenco” originated, but all agree that the art form began in southern Spain—Andalusia and Murcia—but was also shaped by musicians and performers in the Caribbean, Latin America, and Europe. Imagining the Future of Learning: AI, Education and Humans Special Conference and Symposium Welcome to Imagining the Future of Learning: AI, Education and Humans ! Join us at the AJ Palumbo Science and Technology Center, Carlow University for a day filled with insightful discussions on the intersection of artificial intelligence, education, and human interaction. This in-person event will bring together experts and enthusiasts to explore how technology is shaping the future of learning. Don't miss out on this unique opportunity to engage in thought-provoking conversations and gain new perspectives on the evolving landscape of education. A copy of Dr. Illah's Nourbakhsh's new book will be provided to all participants. Keynote: AI, Education and Humanity Dr. Illah R. Nourbakhsh, Carnegie Mellon University The maturation of artificial intelligence is transforming work and education at a rapid pace. How will the advances in human intelligence affect our lives in the future? How can machine learning and robotics be deployed to support, rather than detract from, student learning in college and from social welfare and human empowerment? Graduates of our educational institutions will shape our robot future and help us understand and manage the ethical implications of artificial intelligence. Promotion of technology fluency—the ability to be a developer and shaper, rather than merely a consumer, of these technologies—is the key to student success and personal fulfillment in the decades of change ahead. In this talk I will use McCabe's Keywords as a grammar for understanding the ways in which AI interrogates our identity as humans, and the ways in which we can prepare students for a challenging future.
