Artist Ayesha Hameed and musician Tom Hirst perform their new work We are in flood (2024), exploring subaquatic bodies of water as sites of grief, suffering and kinship. Through these water ecosystems and adjacent worlds, the piece weaves together echoes of voices from past works Black Atlantis: The End of Eating Everything and Brown Atlantis Radio as Hameed and Hirst continue their explorations of the Atlantic and Indian oceans and the imagined Kumari Kandam, a lost Tamil continent that was the cradle of all human civilisation. She is an interdisciplinary artist based in London who works across film, sound, textiles, performance and poetry. Her work explores legacies of indentureship and slavery through the figures of the Atlantic and Indian Ocean. Recent commissions including solo and group exhibitions at Bonniers Konsthall (2022) Kunstinstituut Melly (2022), Indigo Waves and Other Stories at Zeitz MOCCA (2022), as well as contributions to the Liverpool Biennale (2021), Gothenburg Biennales (2019 and 2021), Momenta Biennale (2021), Lubumbashi Biennale (2019) and Dakar Biennale (2018). Recent performances have been at Cafe Oto (2024), Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary, Madrid (2023), Akademie der Künste der Welt , Cologne (2019) SAVVY Contemporary, Berlin (2019) and Camden Art Centre (2017) Hameed is co-editor of Futures and Fictions (Repeater 2017) and co-author of Visual Cultures as Time Travel (Sternberg/MIT 2021) and is currently working on two new publications; her series of audio essays Black Atlantis with Strange Attractor Press and the radio series Brown Atlantis Radio with Centre for Art Reasearch and Alliances (CARA) in New York. Tom Hirst is a London-based musician working out of his studio in Woolwich. His music takes inspiration from hauntological pop, heavy guitar music, computer generated and modular synth-based generative music and science fiction soundtracks. Since the early 90’s he has been producing, collaborating and playing in bands in the UK and abroad. Performing and recording under his aliases Design a Wave and American Sound, his chameleon-like style has seen his music released by a variety of record labels including Alien Jams, Alter, Subsubtropics and Rush hour's no label. He plays guitar in Alice Band and writes and performs with Freya Barlow as synth pop duo Sugar Daddy. Acclaimed author and MFA faculty-in-residence Aaron Hamburger will read from his work in the Rutgers-Camden Campus Center Multipurpose Room. Aaron Hamburger is the author of a story collection titled THE VIEW FROM STALIN’S HEAD which was awarded the Rome Prize by the American Academy of Arts and Letters and nominated for a Violet Quill Award. He has also written three novels: FAITH FOR BEGINNERS, nominated for a Lambda Literary Award, NIRVANA IS HERE, winner of a Bronze Medal from the 2019 Foreword Reviews Indies Book Awards, and HOTEL CUBA, featured by NPR and named a Best Book of 2023 by Hadassah Magazine. In 2023, he was awarded by Lambda Literary with the Jim Duggins, PhD Outstanding Mid-Career Novelist Prize. Aaron's writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Chicago Tribune, The Village Voice, Tin House, Michigan Quarterly Review, Subtropics, Crazyhorse, Boulevard, Poets & Writers, Tablet, O, the Oprah Magazine, Out, The Massachusetts Review, The Bennington Review, Nerve, Time Out, Details, and The Forward. He has also won fellowships from Yaddo, Djerassi, the Civitella Ranieri Foundation, the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, and the Edward F. What is evil? How can it be framed and articulated? Can its articulation paradoxically obscure larger forces and structures that seek to prevent social and societal change? What do conspiracy and narrative mean in today's world? Is evil still a valid term? Artist, musician, and writer Steven Warwick, who performs under the moniker of Heatsick, will lead a two-day workshop at Camden Art Centre. The workshop will offer an introductory theoretical and practical understanding of how to navigate the concept of evil, both historically and in contemporary society. Drawing from his 2022 book Notes on Evil, Warwick will lead a day of discursive theoretical exploration, examining how the concept manifests in his practice as a performer and in popular culture more broadly. Jive Poetic is a writer, organizer, and educator based in Brooklyn, New York. He received his BA in Media Studies from the State University of New York at Buffalo, and his MFA in Writing and Activism from Pratt Institute. In 2017 Jive was the first recipient of the John Morning Award for Art and Service. He is the founder of Insurgent Poets Society, Carnival Slam: Cultural Exchange, and the co-founder of the Brooklyn Poetry Slam. His work has been showcased on season four of TVONE’s Lexus Verses and Flow, PBS News Hour, and BET. International recognition and support for his work has come from the British Arts Council; US Embassies in Australia, Brazil, and Poland; and the Minister Of Culture in Antigua and Barbuda. Currently, Jive is the Friday night poetry slam curator and host at the Nuyorican Poet’s Café.
