Susan Edwards Richmond - The Great Pollinator Count! | Little Shop of Stories

Apr 18, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Decatur
Cultural Experiences
Buzz on over to little shop for a very special evening storytime event with author Susan Edwards Richmond and Great Southeast Pollinator Census coordinator Becky Griffin! Susan will be reading her new picture book, The Great Pollinator Count , talking all things bugs/birds/bats with Becky, and doing a themed activity with all the wee readers! Bee sure to join us for what's sure to be a super fun evening! See below for more info: Tickets: Admission: $0 This event is free to attend! We just ask that everyone who plans on coming please have a free admission ticket to help us keep a headcount. Pre-Order The Great Pollinator Count: $18.99 You must purchase a copy of the book from Little Shop in order to enter the signing line. About the Book: Today Mellie and her friends are excited to participate in The Great Pollinator Count. Everyone is hoping that the school garden will attract even more pollinators than they counted last year. Mellie and her friend Sylvie invite Jason, a new kid in their class, to come along. When Jason surprises them by showing up for the count, they find out that he is not at all interested in counting icky bugs. Mellie is unprepared when Ms. Bombus, their teacher, assigns her to be Jason’s partner. Making the best of an awkward situation, Mellie tries to show Jason how to look for honeybees, butterflies, and other insect pollinators among the lantana and bee balm plants. He hangs back at first, still not convinced he wants to be that close to these buzzy insects, but it isn’t long before he is looking for pollinators on his own. By the time the whistle blows to end the count, both kids have learned a lot about pollinators and discovered the rewards of teamwork in community science. Young readers can count along with Mellie and Jason as they record each insect that lands on a flower and list them on the sidebar tally sheets. When Ms. Bombus finally calls “Time’s up,” readers will be ready to join a pollinator count in their own community! Stephanie Fizer Coleman’s charming illustrations give readers a “bug’s eye” view of the pollination counting process. In the back matter, the author provides a detailed glossary, resources, and information about America’s largest regional pollinator count. About the Author and Guest: Susan Edwards Richmond is the award-winning author of Night Owl Night and the community science adventures Bioblitz! Counting Critters and Bird Count . Night Owl Night is a Massachusetts Book Award Honor Title and a Bank Street College of Education Best Children’s Book of the Year. Susan is also the author of Science Play , an activity book for preschoolers in Storey Publishing’s Busy Little Hands series. Her third book is part of the “Community Science Counts” series, The Great Pollinator Count . A passionate birder and naturalist, Susan teaches preschool on a farm and wildlife sanctuary in eastern Massachusetts. She earned her M.A. in Creative Writing from the University of California, Davis, and her B.A. with Honors in English from Williams College. She is also an award-winning poet with five collections of nature-based poetry for adults. Susan is happiest exploring natural habitats with her husband and two daughters, and learns the native birds wherever she travels. Becky Griffin is University of Georgia (UGA)’s Community & School Garden Coordinator where she works with Extension agents across the state helping create impactful gardens. She is also a Pollinator Health Associate and a Georgia certified beekeeper. Emphasizing the ecosystem of the garden and teaching workshops on beneficial entomology and integrated pest management are important parts of her work. Becky is the coordinator of the Great Southeast Pollinator Census which is a passion project for her. Becky has been with UGA Extension for over 13 years and enjoys the collaborations and friendships that working with the University brings. Becky represents the Southeastern US region on the Community Seed Network Advisory Panel and sits on the board of directors for The Bee Cause. She is also part of the Southeast Bumble Bee Atlas program and works with the Pollinator Plants of the Year program. Information Source: Little Shop of Stories | eventbrite

About The Eyes and the Impossible: A wild, lyrical, hilarious and beautiful story of a wild dog living and surviving in an urban park Johannes, a free dog, lives in a park hemmed in on three sides by dense human neighborhoods, and on one side by the ocean. His job is to be the Eyes--to see everything that happens within the park and report to the park's elders, three ancient bison who ensure the Equilibrium. His friends--a stalwart seagull, a mordant raccoon, a one-eyed squirrel, and a pelican who can read--work with him as the Assistant Eyes, observing the humans and other animals who share the park and making sure everything is in balance. But changes are afoot. More humans, including Trouble Travelers, arrive in the park. A new building, containing mysterious and hypnotic rectangles, goes up. And then there are the goats--an actual boatload of goats--who appear, along with a shocking revelation that changes Johannes' view of the world. Readers will thrill to Johannes's inimitable and wonderful voice, and will gorge on this unforgettable story of friendship, beauty, liberation, and running very, very fast. About the author: Dave Eggers is the author of many books, including The Eyes and the Impossible, The Every, The Circle, The Monk of Mokha, and the National Book Award finalist A Hologram for the King, as well as numerous books for young readers, including Her Right Foot, Faraway Things, and The Lifters. As the companions nervously slink into the chamber, your heart rate triples and you hear a low rumble. “What is it?” your friend asks. Before you can answer, there’s a clatter as you stumble on a loose stone. The low rumble stops suddenly, and a monstrous roar fills the cavern. “I woke the dragon,” you say, “RUN!” Calling all rogues, warlocks, druids, and barbarians! D&D camp is about all things Dungeons & Dragons and role-playing games. Not only will kids create characters to go on epic adventures, but we will fill our days with crafts, games, and activities connected to this wonderful game! Your child does not have to have already played D&D, they just have to come prepared with enthusiasm and lots of imagination! All camps are daycamps and will be held Monday through Friday . The camp day starts at 9 a.m. and runs to 4 p.m. promptly. There is no aftercare, early drop-off, or partial week option. The cost of each week of camp is $400. Cat Kid Comics Camp | Little Shop of Stories

Jun 16, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Decatur
Cultural Experiences
Do you want to make comics like Petey? Or George and Harold? Do you want to make crafts and play games, and learn to be a hero like our favorite part-dog, part-man, all justice: Dog Man? Then come join us as we draw comics, make Dog Man themed crafts, and play all the Dav Pilkey themed games you can imagine! All camps are daycamps and will be held Monday through Friday . The camp day starts at 9 a.m. and runs to 4 p.m. promptly. There is no aftercare, early drop-off, or partial week option. The cost of each week of camp is $400. Weather permitting, campers walk to Ebster Pool on Thursday mornings and typically spend lunchtime at a nearby park. Campers bring their own lunch, snacks, water bottles, and sunscreen every day. Little Shop camps are a wonderful place for play, imagination, and friendship. All activities are geared for group rather than individual attention. Please note that our staff is not trained to work with children with special needs, nor do we have the staffing to meet the needs of children who require intensive individual assistance. If you have concerns, please communicate with us as soon as possible so that we can begin a discussion. If we determine we are unable to meet your child's needs, for the safety of your child, other campers, and camp staff we will ask that your child be withdrawn from camp. Cancellation Policy--Please read before registering for camp! Information Source: Little Shop of Stories | eventbrite
