Jeffrey Wasserstrom 'Vigil' with Timothy Garton Ash | Blackwell's Bookshop
Jan 23, 2025 (UTC+0)
Oxford
Vigil The rise of Hong Kong is the story of a miraculous post-War boom, when Chinese refugees flocked to a small British colony, and, in less than 50 years, transformed it into one of the great financial centres of the world. The unravelling of Hong Kong, on the other hand, shatters the grand illusion of China ever having the intention of allowing democratic norms to take root inside its borders. Hong Kong's people were subjects of the British Empire for more than a hundred years, and now seem destined to remain the subordinates of today's greatest rising power. Although we have witnessed the end of the mass protests that rocked Hong Kong in 2019-20, the political struggle for Hong Kong continues to be one of the biggest challenges to China's authoritarianism in 30 years. Activists who are passionately committed to defending the special qualities of a home they love continue to fight against Beijing's crafty efforts to bring the city into its fold and erase its recent past. Jeffrey Wasserstrom, one of the world's leading China specialists, draws on his many visits to the city, and knowledge of the history of repression and resistance, to help us understand the deep roots and the broad significance of the large protests that took place in Hong Kong five years go. The result is a riveting tale of tragedy but also heroism - one of the great David-versus- Goliath battles of our time, pitting determined street protesters against the intransigence of Xi Jinping, the most ambitious leader of China since the days of Mao. Jeffrey Wasserstrom Jeffrey Wasserstrom is an American historian of modern China. He is Chancellor's Professor of History at the University of California, Irvine. Wasserstrom's research interests began with the role of student protest and have grown to include the social history of China and comparative social history. Timothy Garton Ash Timothy Garton Ash is the author of eleven books of political writing or ‘history of the present’ which have charted the transformation of Europe over the last half century. He is Professor of European Studies in the University of Oxford, Isaiah Berlin Professorial Fellow at St Antony’s College, Oxford, and a Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University. He writes a column on international affairs in the Guardian which is widely syndicated.

Chand Ali Khan Qawwal & Party | The Auditorium
Jan 24, 2025 (UTC+0)
Oxford
Qawwali is a devotional art of Sufi Muslims in India and Pakistan, a musical poetry that speaks of deep love and longing for God, and the ecstasy and intoxication to be found in his blessing. Performed by a lead qawwal and chorus, and accompanied by harmonium and tabla, the power of qawwali is such that its practitioners and audience often become gripped by divine trance. It’s a tradition that stretches back to the 13th century, which has found a passionate international audience in the 20th century through the art of great performers such as Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and the Sabri Brothers. Born in Pakistan and now based in the UK, Chand Ali Khan has become recognised as one of the leading lights of qawwali in Europe. Having been initiated and trained under the Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Memorial Academy, Chand made his first public performance at the age of 13 and has since been blessed with the tutelage of Ustad Iqbal Hassan Khan and Ustad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. His performances are fiery, full of raw emotion and true passion, inspiring audiences across the world. Qawwali is one of the world’s most touching musical and spiritual traditions, capable of moving audiences beyond any boundaries of language or religious belief. This is sure to be a very special concert. We are thrilled that Chand Ali Khan Qawwal and Party will bring their extraordinary performance to the World’s Music at Oxford! Doors will open at 6:30pm and the performance will start at 7pm. A special thanks to Noorani Events for supporting this concert. ------------------------------ The World’s Music at Oxford is a project run and supported by St John's College at the University of Oxford, which blends research into global musics with live performance. We realise it can be difficult for a goalkeeper to be spotted, and we wanted to give our goalkeepers more opportunities. We have since opened it to all goalkeepers and built great relationships with professional clubs. Since the inception of our trial days two years ago, we've been instrumental in turning the dreams of numerous goalkeepers into reality. Three goalkeepers have been signed by Brighton, two each by Hull City and Reading, and one each by Portsmouth, Barnsley, Bristol City and Oxford United after being spotted at our trial days. The most recent one, Nottingham Forest signed Charlie in October after getting spotted on our trial day. Three of these goalkeepers, like Zach, have been called up to the England setup since signing. One keeper secured a scholarship at Colchester United, and Chelsea Ladies signed a girl after being identified at our trial days. These success stories are a testament to the opportunities we provide, even for those who might have thought their chance had gone. All your child might need this opportunity, and they’ll have a great time doing it! On the trial day, your child can showcase their talent and have lots of fun doing it. About the book: UNEVEN tells the stories of nine pioneering bisexual artists, writers and musicians that will change our understanding of the world's largest sexual minority. Bisexuality is often seen as something temporary, in spite of increasing openness around it: a sign of immaturity or a waystation on the road to a different sexuality altogether, rather than its own distinct entity. In this beautifully written cultural history, Sam Mills reclaims bisexuality as its own identity, interweaving her experience of being bisexual with illuminating portraits of a clutch of artists, writers and musicians, including Colette, Bessie Smith, Marlene Dietrich, Anaïs Nin, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Madonna. Celebrating the resilience, diversity and spirit of the bisexual community through the ages, Uneven explores how each of these trailblazing figures have been misunderstood; how social attitudes affected their sexuality, their relationships and their work; how LGBTQ+ identities have been portrayed from the Victorian era to the present day; and how attitudes have progressed. Illuminating, personal and entertaining, Uneven paints a nuanced portrait of a sidelined community. About the author: SAM MILLS is the author of The Quiddity of Will Self and The Watermark, along with three young adult novels, including the award-winning Blackout. Her memoir about being a carer, The Fragments of My Father, was published in 2020. Sam has written for a number of publications, including the Guardian, Independent, 3 AM and London Magazine. Tickets are £4.00. Admission is free when purchasing a copy of the book. If you cannot make the event but would like a dedicated copy of the book, please email events.manchester@blackwell.co.uk or call us on 0161 274 3331. Love in Exile Love in Exile is a meditation on love, fulfilment, and escaping the confines of a ‘normal life’. Lunchtime Talk: 'Alice's Adventures in Oxford' | Museum of Oxford
Feb 12, 2025 (UTC+0)
Oxford
Alice's Adventures in Oxford - Real people as Wonderland Characters (and some who weren't!) Within the imaginative fantasy of Lewis Carroll’s ‘Alice’ books lie many Oxford realities, including a number of real people who feature as 'Wonderland' characters. Many were University acquaintances, but some were townspeople, known to either Lewis Carroll or the real Alice (Alice Liddell, daughter of the Dean of Christ Church). There was 'one of the thorny kind', for instance, and an eccentric headgear specialist whose dog Alice remembered fondly even when she was eighty years old. Additionally, author Lewis Carroll was friendly with many Oxford families after the publications of 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' and 'Through the Looking-Glass'. His skill as a photographer and inventor of games made him a popular guest, including at the homes of families whose names live on as the Oxford institutions of Lucy & Co and Mallams, the auctioneers. Join local historian, guide, and author Mark Davies (a trustee of the Lewis Carroll Society) for a talk which will reveal some pertinent, surprising, and long-lasting aspects of Victorian Oxford through the curious medium of the world's most famous children's story. Complimentary tea and coffee will be available to enjoy during the talk. We recommend arriving before the start of the talk if you would like to grab a refreshment. Tickets cost £5 and can be purchased online via Eventbrite (booking fee applies) or at the Museum Shop. Sales from tickets help support our work to deliver fun and accessible family activities, community engagement projects, schools workshops, exhibitions and special events for Oxford’s people in our Museum spaces. Mark Daviesis an Oxford local historian, public speaker, and guide. His publications include the social and cultural importance of the city’s waterways (A Towpath Walk in Oxford; Alice in Waterland; Alice’s Oxford on Foot; What a Liberty!), historical crime (Stories of Oxford Castle; The Abingdon Waterturnpike Murder) and a biography of the first English hot air balloonist, James Sadler (King of All Balloons). He is a Trustee of the Lewis Carroll society, a member of the Society of Authors, and on the committee of the Alliance of Literary Societies. Access: There is step-free, level entry access to the Town Hall via the entrance closest to Carfax Tower (to the left of the main steps as you face the Town Hall). Inside the Museum, Museum Makers is accessible via a platform lift to the Galleries and then a lift to the basement. Accessible toilets are available in the Museum (close to Museum Makers) and in the Town Hall on the ground floor, before entering the Museum. Please contact the Museum team if you’d like to talk to a member of staff about your access requirements. Further access information can be found on our page dedicated to access at the museum. Photo consent: Please be aware that photographs will be taken at this event for use in marketing. If you (or a member of your group) would prefer not to be photographed, please let a member of staff know during the event.

S J Bradley & Rachel Bower in conversation | Blackwell's Bookshop
Feb 12, 2025 (UTC+0)
Oxford
We're excited to welcome authors S J Bradley and Rachel Bower to the shop to discuss their respective works; short story collection Maps of Imaginary Towns and novel It Comes From The River. Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm Tickets are £4.00. Admission is free when purchasing a copy of the book, which is available at a special launch event price of £14.99 on the evening or as part of the advance ticket. About the books: From futuristic colonies to drab estates, the inventive stories in S J Bradley's MAPS OF IMAGINARY TOWNS showcase a remarkable range. With lyrical prose and psychological depth, Bradley illuminates the quiet heroism pulsing through seemingly ordinary lives. Beleaguered, yet resourceful social workers battle towering workloads; a harassed elderly childminder collapses under the strain; a victim of domestic abuse strikes out for freedom and disgruntled workers in dead-end jobs dream of a brighter future. Infused with the folklore of Northern England, It Comes from the River is an unforgettable, uncanny debut about violence, resilience and hope - and the power of women when they work together.
In IT COMES FROM THE RIVER, Alex is trying to hold her growing family together with a husband who is becoming more and more difficult to keep happy. Lauren hopes that the new man in her life might present a fresh start for her and her two boys. And Nancy's son has moved her into a care home where she feels entirely out of place, longing for her lost dog while dreaming of her own escape.
But there is something else at play here. Something lurking in the water or at the end of an unlit street; a shadow in a bag of strangers' clothing; a chorus of voices calling in the distance. As each woman's world spirals from her grasp, they feel it getting closer, revealing the truth of what binds them together, and what must be done to set each of them free... About the authors: S J BRADLEY is a writer from Wakefield. Her short fiction has appeared in various journals and anthologies including Conradology and Resist! Stories of Uprising from Comma Press, New Willesden Short Stories 7, Queen Mobs, Litro magazine, and Untitled Books. Her first novel, Brick Mother, and her second novel, Guest, are both published by Dead Ink. She is the editor of the Saboteur Award-winning anthology Remembering Oluwale, which is available from Valley Press. Her work as an arts organiser involves the non-profit literary social Fictions of Every Kind (which ran for 10 years), The Northern Short Story Festival and the Walter Swan Short Story Prize. She is also a teacher of creative writing including short story writing courses for Comma Press and First Story in Leeds and Bradford. RACHEL BOWER is an award-winning writer from Bradford. Rachel is also a beekeeper, cold water enthusiast and the founder of Wild Writes, which runs workshops encouraging people to connect with nature and creativity. Tickets are £4.00.
