THE POSSIBILITY OF TENDERNESS: Jason Allen-Paisant in conversation | Blackwell's Bookshop

Mar 24, 2025 (UTC+0)
Oxford
Arts
Literary Arts
We are so excited to welcome Jason Allen-Paisant to the shop in collaboration with the Centre for New Writing to celebrate the publication of The Possibility of Tenderness: A Jamaican Memoir of Plants and Dreams. Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm Tickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book. About the book: THE POSSIBILITY OF TENDERNESS is the first work of non-fiction from multi award-winning Jamaican poet Jason Allen-Paisant, a personal history narrated through the lens of the ‘grung’ and plants. It’s also a people’s history of the land, a family saga, an archival detective story through time. It’s the migration tale of a young scholar who arrives in Britain from rural Jamaica to study at Oxford to achieve ‘upward social mobility’ and who now lives in Roundhay Leeds. Suddenly, amidst his journey of dreams and class aspiration, the plants and people of his native district, Coffee Grove, begin to offer different ways of living, alternative dreams, and the possibility of tenderness and the permission to roam England. Marrying the local and the familial with global history and unfolding as a timely and immersive tale of land, environment, and the world of plants, The Possibility of Tenderness reveals how the history of a tiny rural village in a mountainous region of Jamaica is interlinked with that of modern Britain. And, also what that rural village can teach us about leisure, land ownership and reclamation today. About the author: Jason Allen-Paisant is a Jamaican writer and multi-award-winning poet. He is the author of two critically acclaimed books of poetry, Thinking with Trees and Self-Portrait as Othello, which won the UK’s two most prestigious poetry awards for 2023 — the Forward Prize and T.S. Eliot Prize. He is also a Professor of Critical Theory and Creative Writing at the University of Manchester and Associate Editor of Callaloo Literary Journal. Tickets are £4.00. Admission is free when purchasing a copy of the book. If you cannot make the event but would like a dedicated copy of the book, please email events.manchester@blackwell.co.uk or call us on 0161 274 3331. Craft
2-Day Glazes for Wood Firing Workshop 15 & 16 March 2025 We’re excited to offer a two-day course on glazes designed specifically for wood-firing at stoneware temperatures, led by renowned French ceramic artist and kiln firer Claude Aussage. This intensive workshop delves into the chemistry and techniques required to create glazes that thrive in the unique conditions of wood-fired kilns, with a particular focus on the high-fired stoneware range. Claude’s course covers essential topics such as: • Understanding glaze chemistry: The role of fluxes, silica, and alumina in achieving the desired melting behavior and surface qualities under wood-firing conditions. • Developing glaze recipes: How to adjust base recipes to enhance the ash interaction and atmospheric effects characteristic of wood-fired surfaces. • Testing and refining: Techniques for small-batch glaze testing, firing analysis, and adapting glazes to specific kilns and clays. This workshop precedes a five-day kiln-building and firing course, giving participants the opportunity to expand their expertise further by applying their glazes in practice. Attendees are welcome to enroll in any of the courses individually or as a combined learning experience. Having Claude in the UK is a rare and valuable opportunity. His expertise and passion make each session a unique event, providing both inspiration and practical skills. He returns periodically to share his knowledge, and every visit feels like a special occasion for our ceramics community. Whether you’re just beginning to explore high-fired glazes or are looking to refine your wood-firing techniques, this is an unparalleled opportunity to learn from a master of the craft in a hands-on, collaborative setting. Fastfiring Kiln Building Course 17-21 March 2025 £750.00 SAVE YOUR PLACE NOW £50 Your Eventbrite booking allows you to book a place. Once you have booked a place we will contact you to arrange a payment link for the balance of your course payment. Returning to Oxford Kilns, we have our next dates for our Fastfiring Kiln Building Course. This course is led by Claude Aussage, one of Europe's leading kiln builders. This is a wood-firing kiln of his own design, developed from decades of kiln building across the world, and adapted in the light of over a hundred firings at Oxford to meet the conditions and requirements of our kilnsite. These are the really excellent fastfire kilns, that are in almost constant use at Oxford Kilns, and on which we run our woodfiring courses. These kilns are highly adaptable, and will fire on scrap wood to 1300 degrees/cone 12 in reducing conditions over 8 to14 hours. They can produce an excellent array of wood-fired effects. The course consists of a kiln build and a first firing. It includes lectures on kilns, woodfiring and ceramics and is co-taught by Dr Robin WIlson, director of Oxford Kilns, ceramic artist, anthopologist and archaeologist. Robin has a decade of leading a high paced programme of firings at Oxford, evolving the firing techniques rapidly to make the very best of the kilns and wood. You will be able to bring your own pots and fire them in the kiln you build. There is free camping on site, with hot showers and an out-door kitchen, or you can arrange your own accommodation locally. There are a large number of local AirB&Bs. Limited accommodation at our fieldstudy centre in the Woods is also available for those booking early in advance. Usually firing teams cook and eat communally on site, which we will arrange nearer the time. For help and advice, contact Dr Robin Wilson of Oxford Kilns. CARRION CROW - Heather Parry in conversation with Lara Williams | Blackwell's Bookshop

Oxford
Arts
Literary Arts
We can't wait to welcome Heather Parry to the shop to discussion her claustrophobic, captivating new novel CARRION CROW,about a young woman locked away in the attic to preserve her family's name. Heather will be in conversation with Lara Williams, author of Supper Club and The Odyssey. Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm Tickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book. About the book: There are some facts about the world that only your mother can teach you. Marguerite had been confined for the sake of her wellbeing. That's what her mother had said. Marguerite Périgord is locked in the attic of her family home, a towering Chelsea house overlooking the stinking Thames. Her mother is concerned that Marguerite's engagement to a much older, near-penniless solicitor, will drag the family name into disrepute and this simply won't do. For company Marguerite has a sewing machine, Mrs Beeton's Book of Household Management and a carrion crow who has come to nest in the rafters. Restless, she spends her waning energies on the fascinations of her own body, memorising Mrs Beeton's advice and longing for her life outside. As Marguerite's patience turns into rage, the boundaries of her mind and body start to fray. Probably one of the best books I've read this year! It felt like an unholy mix of Ottessa Moshfegh and Leonora Carrington, whilst still being very much its own thing … I loved it - Julia Armfield, author of Private Rites and Our Wives Under The Sea About the author: Heather Parry is a Glasgow-based writer and editor, originally from South Yorkshire. Her debut novel, Orpheus Builds a Girl, was shortlisted for the Saltire Society Fiction Book of the Year Award and longlisted for the Polari First Book Prize. She is also the author of a short story collection, This Is My Body, Given For You, and her first nonfiction book, Electric Dreams: On Sex Robots and the Failed Promises of Capitalism, was released in 2024 as part of 404 Ink’s Inklings series. If you cannot make the event but would like a dedicated copy of the book, please email events.manchester@blackwell.co.uk or call us on 0161 274 3331. We are thrilled to be welcoming Alex Allison and Curtis Garner to the shop for an evening of queer stories touching on masculinity and desire. Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm Tickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy of either book. About the books: About Greatest Of All Time: Samson Kabarebe is on the verge of stardom. At just nineteen, he's poised to take the football world by storm. Joining a struggling Premier League team, he steps into the spotlight, taking over the position-and squad number-of a rising homegrown talent who is wrestling with his own dreams and desires. What begins as resentment between the two young athletes quickly evolves into an intense, undeniable bond. Samson's fiery drive, electrifying skills and irresistible charm spark a transformation, not just in the fortunes of the team, but in the lives around him. As their connection deepens, the story hurtles into a high-stakes world of competition, passion and raw want. Both men are forced to confront the pressures of masculinity, the ever-present threat of scandal, and the fragile balance of living in a body that could betray you at any moment. About Isaac: In modern-day London, inexperienced teenager Isaac loses his virginity through a dating app - a disappointing yet addictive experience. Overwhelmed by his A-Level exams and uncertain future, he spends his last summer before university escaping into a dizzying new world of casual sex with forgettable men. Until he meets twenty-eight-year-old Harrison at a party. Isaac is immediately infatuated by the handsome, charismatic artist, but as they grow closer, his sense of self becomes increasingly hazy. Harrison's demands shift constantly, and while Isaac tries everything to prove his worthiness, jeopardising his relationships with his mother and his best friend in the process, he must ask himself: is he complicit in his own suffering? Is Harrison the reason he has lost himself, or did he even know who he was to begin with? About the authors: Alex Allison(b. 1991) lives and works in London. Alex is a graduate of the Centre for New Writing MA at University of Manchester. His debut novel, The Art of the Body, was published in 2019. About the authors: Angelo Tijssens studied theatre at the Antwerp Conservatorium. He was director Lukas Dhont’s co-writer on award-winning feature films Girl and Close. De randen (The Edges) is his debut novel. It has been translated into Spanish, French and German, won the jury prize at the Prix Roman Gay in France and was shortlisted for the Bronzen Uil in the Netherlands. He lives in Antwerp. Evening Class: Imploded Still-Lives | Modern Art Oxford

Mar 20, 2025 (UTC+0)
Oxford
Arts
Painting
Revisit what you know about traditional techniques to create still-lifes from destroyed domestic objects. This class offers an introduction to drawing or an opportunity to reimagine and expand your practice, leading to radically different creative outcomes. For generations, artists have used objects to explore representations of the self by infusing even the most ordinary items with deeper meaning. Feminist artists, in particular, have politicised subjecthood through the use of symbolic objects making statements about identity, agency and societal roles. All abilities welcome – no previous art experience necessary! This is the first of three evening classes inspired by our current exhibition Barbara Steveni: I Find Myself. Tickets are sold per session to keep things flexible, but we encourage you to attend all three if you can! Friends received early booking on this event. Find out more about joining as a Friend here.
