During his remarkable life, Walter Tull became one of the first Black professional footballers, playing with Tottenham Spurs, and one of the first Black Britons to become an officer in the British Army in 1917. In this talk, Phil Vasili, who played a critical role in uncovering Tull’s story, will present the history of Walter Tull. About the author:Phil Vasili was born in London but grew up in Cambridge, Kent and Essex. As a boy he dreamed of becoming a professional footballer. Though he played at representative and semi-professional level he never achieved his ambition of becoming a full-time pro. After playing he coached at professional clubs and scouted for Birmingham City, Manchester United, Coventry City and Blackpool. Writing, like football, is a passion he has had since childhood. Unable to separate the dual obsessions of politics and sport he has had published three biographies, a social history and a novel. The BBC has made two documentaries and one drama based upon them, all aired on BBC4. He is currently working on a biography of ex-Manchester United, Manchester City and Rochdale footballer, Tony Whelan. His play, Tull, directed by David Thacker, had a successful three week run at the Octagon Theatre, Bolton. The play was later produced by the Tottenham Theatre Company and performed at the Bernie Grant Arts Centre. He has had two other plays produced for London theatres. He was executive producer of 'Antonio's Breakfast' which won the 2006 short film (drama) BAFTA. In 2011 he wrote and directed his first feature film 'The Crack'. He is also one of the few white recipients of a Football Blacklist Award. Information Source: Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea Libraries | eventbrite

Taster class - Learn Improv | The Exchange

Oct 19, 2024 (UTC+10)ENDED
Grove

Theater
Then try our free taster workshop! This fun and friendly workshop is designed to give you a quick taste of what our improv classes have to offer. We will run through some basic improv activities and show you what we love so much about improvisation. Plus it's a chance to meet and get to know our wonderful teachers. Best of all - it's free! Age requirement Please note: Our classes are primarily aimed at adults - if you are under 18, let us know and we will confirm if you can attend the class. What is improvisation? Improvisation is any performance where there has been no pre-planning: where there is no script or any detailed outline for the show. However, improv is more than simply the absence of these things. It also represents a process and a philosophy of communication, creativity and connection. It is these skills and ideas which allow performers to work with each other, in the moment, to create amazing and wonderful scenes. Why learn improv? Improv is a fun, challenging art-form which teaches skills which are useful both in everyday life and performance. Improv is invaluable for actors or creatives who want to be faster on their feet and explore their creative processes. It's also valuable for non-performers as it teaches skills relating to communication, confidence and teamwork. Plus, it's fun! Improv is an incredibly accessible art-form, and a well-designed beginner's class will feel friendly and be enjoyable for people from all backgrounds and levels of experience. Why learn with Improv Queensland? We have been teaching people to improvise for over 15 years and have the longest running improvised training programme in Brisbane. We have taught hundreds of people how to improvise, including actors, comedians, caberet artists, CEOs, doctors, barristers, miners, and teachers. Our beginner’s curriculum is a tried and tested product which will give you an excellent introduction to improvisation. We also provide well-regarded intermediate and advanced workshops which provide opportunities for students to take their improvisation further. We also have Brisbane’s most experienced improvisation teachers, with our teachers generally having many years of performance and teaching under their belts. We also operate a constant process of professional development for our teachers including in-house training, feedback sessions and external workshops. Hello, I'm Gina and a local artist from Hallatrow which is in between Bristol and Bath. Being creative is my happy place - it makes me smile and makes me feel like ‘me’ and I would love to share that feeling with you during my abstract painting workshop. My workshop will involve practical sessions around how to create abstract paintings in an intuitive way, focusing on creating texture and mark making whilst finding out which colours you are drawn to. We will use brushes and palette knives with acrylic paint, and we will try using paint directly from the tube as well as paint mixed with water. We will also try using a medium added to the paint to add yet more texture! These techniques are the ones I use to create my own art and I hope you will enjoy it as much as I do. My painting workshop will give you an opportunity to try a new skill or a new way of painting and help you find your creative happy place, in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. FRANKIE AND THE WITCH FINGERS, Spoon Benders at The Grove House Thu, Oct 24, 2024 DOOR 6:00PM / SHOW 7:00 PM $25 ADV / $30 DOS WEB/ IG / SPOTIFY / WIKI There’s long been a growl festering in the West, an earthen rumble fed by tectonic tension, acrid smoke, and sun-parched air. The brew has boiled over lately, a pressure-cooked chaos that can no longer be contained. The growl has grown to a howl.. the howl is at the door. Few are as ready to meet the madness head on as Frankie and the Witch Fingers. On their new album, Data Doom, the band hurtles the listener head first into the wood-chipper of technological dystopia, systemic rot, creeping fascism, the military-industrial profit mill, and a near-constant erosion of humanity that peels away the soul bit by bit. With a fuse lit by these modern-day monstrosities the band seeks to find salvation through a thousand watt wake-up of rock n’ roll exfoliation. After tearing through the tender heart of the Midwest, Frankie and the Witch Fingers found themselves clamped down on the fried edges of Los Angeles, carving out a niche that’s equal parts molten tar pit teardown and cataclysmic careen. Following releases on Hypnotic Bridge, Let’s Pretend, and Permanent, the band landed between the twin barbs of Greenway and The Reverberation Appreciation Society, a perfect fit for their frenetic blend of rhythmic whiplash and sonic soul shake. Anchored by songwriters Dylan Sizemore and Josh Menashe, the band has kept a rotating door of friends and collaborators moving through their midst over the past few years, coalescing post-pandemic into a symbiotic stage beast that’s become the beating heart of their new album, Data Doom. Bassist Nikki “Pickle” Smith and drummer Nick Aguilar have been road-hardened and readied over the last year, laying the groundwork for the new record’s 300 pounds of pummel and propulsion. That heft was hurtled onto tape in the band’s Vernon, CA studio space. The locale let the city’s grit creep into the crevices of their new record, a wild swing at the sternum that hits the listener like an adrenaline shot to the heart. Wiping away the haze of stoned-ape psychedelics that permeated their opus Monsters Eating People Eating Monsters… the band favors an asphalt assault of rock, riff, and amphetamine rhythm. As they’ve wound out of the last phase, their sound, over a series of singles, has begun to thicken and throb. It’s coalesced into a darker strain that ingests the explosive impulses of gas-crisis-era proto-punk, the rhythmic insistence of 70’s German Progressives, and the elasticity of funk fusionists alike. They’ve welded their arsenal of influences to a chassis of nail-bitten bombast that drives Data Doom into the midst of the maelstrom. The band has shared bills with Kikagaku Moyo, Ty Segall, Oh Sees, Cheap Trick, and ZZ Top, churning their stage-side scorch into household recognition — burning through a barrage of multicolored vinyl pressings and sparring with indie heavyweights for Billboard chart positions. Data Doom looks to cement that status, a sinewy slab cut on the stone of social collapse and licking the blade in anticipation of what’s to come. “Never name the darkness itself,“ intones Sizemore, but the darkness is already here, embedded in every moment, inextricable from the capital, sabbatical, sustenance, and solace of the modern age. Data Doom is the elixir and the exorcism, it’s the reformation rendered in rock ’n roll. SPOON BENDERS WEB/IG/SPOTIFY Spoon Benders is a progressive psych-rock powerhouse that has been relentlessly crisscrossing the United States, leaving a trail of newly acquired fans in their wake. Spoon Benders have become synonymous with an electrifying stage presence that can only be described as loud, controlled chaos. Spoon Benders have been carving their path through the musical landscape since their inception, and are now consistently supporting notable acts such as Frankie and The Witch Fingers, L7, Fuzz, Meatbodies, Deap Vally, Death Valley Girls, and The Paranoyds. In April of this year, Spoon Benders unleashed their sophomore album, How Things Repeat, upon the eager ears of the public. The album is a testament to the band's artistic evolution and ability to push the boundaries of their sound. How Things Repeat has been met with resounding acclaim, cementing Spoon Benders' status as a force to be reckoned with in the psychedelic rock landscape. Seven years ago, I started Newham Poetry Group, a grassroot initiative that facilitates access to creative writing for people who speak English as their second or third language as well as engaging with marginalised communities through artistic activities such as open mics, spoken words or even publishing their own books. I also co-founded Queer Newham and Borderless local initiatives that bring visibility to LGBTQ+ issues in my area and support LGBTQ+ refugees. We work closely with the LB Newham, community groups and neighbours to tackle discrimination, hate crime and other issues that impact us. Simultaneously, I founded Casa Sofia in Colombia, my home country. Casa Sofia is a collective of creative community artists that use artistic approach to connect people, challenge dispowenred narratives and support local initiatives. We love co-creating new maps that help people navigate their neighbourhoods, find their unique resources, strengthen their abilities and develop new initiatives that support the wellbeing of their local areas. @sonesquin | soniaquintero.co.uk Writing Our Legacy CIC is an arts and heritage organisation that enables Black, Asian and ethnically diverse/BPOC* people to tell their story through writing and the creative arts. We were established in 2012. We give writers and other creatives a platform and community to feel supported, nurtured and evolve their work through the creative pipeline, from start to publication. We share stories and heritage of diaspora communities and bring them to life through various art forms for audiences to learn and take part in cultural heritage. We are an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation. *BPOC stands for ‘Black people, People of Colour’ and is a self-identifying term. While we use the term BPOC, we acknowledge the limitations of this terminology. At the core of our network is the aim to address and overcome systemic barriers that our members face directly or indirectly based on their ethnic or national identities, race or perceived racial identities, or the colour of their skin as per the Equality Act of 2010. This includes people who identify as Black, brown, people of colour, Global Majority, mixed-race, multiple heritage and/or are from the Global South, and/or are East and South-East Asian, West Asian, Asian, Middle Eastern, African, African-Caribbean, Caribbean, Latinx, Pacific Islander, Indigenous, or First Nations, and diasporas.
