Discover the rich tradition and contemporary practice of wireworking in Slovakia through the experiences of Fulbright Scholar, artist, and educator Kristin Tollefson. Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Slovakian wireworking as Tollefson shares her insights and images from her five-month stay in Central Europe. During her time in Slovakia, Tollefson explored the art of wireworking, known as 'drotárstvo' in Slovak, which originated in the picturesque mountains bordering Czechia and Poland. This ancient craft, which has been recognized as Intangible Heritage by UNESCO, holds a special place in Slovakian culture. Tollefson's journey took her to Žilina, a city in northern Slovakia, where she uncovered the deep-rooted significance of wireworking and its relevance to contemporary discussions in art and society.
As part of this fascinating exploration, Kristin Tollefson will be conducting an Introduction to Sculptural Wireworking workshop on January 20, from 1-4pm. Join her to gain hands-on experience and delve further into the world of wireworking.
Kristin Tollefson is an accomplished artist whose work bridges the gap between people and their environment through sculpture, installation, performance, and jewelry. With an MFA in Metalsmithing from the esteemed Cranbrook Academy of Art, Tollefson has taught at renowned institutions such as Cornish College of the Arts and Pratt Fine Arts Center. Sound Journey into Creative Expression Join us for a transformative experience at Conoy Creek Hideaway where you'll embark on a sound journey and creative endeavor like no other. Flying Cloud Sound (Kenneth-Michael Ebert) and EarthArtYoga (Rhonda Hershey Ike) join forces to bring you an afternoon of inner exploration and outward expression through sound, movement and mark-making. Come prepared to listen deeply, move freely, and rediscover your creativity. This workshop will be held outside, in and around a beautiful creekside pavilion. Dress according to the weather. Participants should be prepared to bring things to make themselves comfortable during the sound sessions of the afternoon. You may sit or lie down, but it is important that your physical body is comfortable so that you are able to relax and absorb everything that your spirit has to offer. Bring any of the following: yoga mats, blankets, pillows, bolsters, a sleeping pad, a sleeping bag, a portable comfy chair - the more the merrier. Comfort is the key. In addition, come dressed in comfortable clothing that allows for full body movement and the understanding that it may get dirty. Art materials will be provided but feel free to bring your medium of choice.

In conversation with BIMA’s Senior Manager of Museum Education & Community Engagement, Jenna d’Anna, artist Roberto Benavidez will discuss his Illuminated Passport commissioned for Crossing the Line: The Passport Re-Imagined and how it follows the historical path of the piñata in whimsical and playful ways. With work in two simultaneous exhibitions at BIMA, Roberto Benavidez is a sculptor specializing in the piñata form. Commissioned by Cynthia Sears, his Illuminated Passport is part of Crossing the Line: The Passport Re-Imagined, and his piñatas are featured in our annual Día de Los Muertos exhibition. In this Curated Conversation, Roberto will cover his career trajectory and share how he came to piñatas as an artistic medium. The piñata craft has been moving between borders for centuries. Although people in the U.S. identify the piñata as distinctly Mexican, it also has roots in China, Spain, and Italy. In conversation with BIMA’s Education lead, Jenna d’Anna, he will discuss his Illuminated Passport and how it follows the historical path of the piñata in whimsical and playful ways. Woven into his work are subtle references to sin, sexuality, and icons from each country that contributed to the piñata’s evolution. The mashup of the medieval aesthetic with piñata materials is intended to reflect and celebrate his mixed-race background and the piñata’s multicultural history. Opening reception at 6pm and audience Q & A to follow the presentation. Guest bio: Roberto Benavidez (b. 1973, Beeville, TX), known for his piñata-based artworks, lives and works in the Los Angeles, CA neighborhood of El Sereno. His sculptures have been featured in national, international, and online publications including ARTnews, Artsy, Atlas Obscura, The Guardian, hifructose.com, Hyperallergic, LUXE Interiors + Design, Politiken, The New York Times and This Is Colossal. Benavidez has shown in group and solo exhibitions, including at the AD&A Museum at UCSB, Craft In America, Mingei International Museum, Palo Alto Art Center, Self Help Graphics, Mesa Contemporary Art Museum, and Riverside Art Museum. LA Metro commissioned him to contribute to the “Through the Eyes of Artists” poster series (2019); his Bosch fruit fascinators are featured in the finale of The Interview with the Vampire series on AMC+; and his work was featured in the 2024 spring issue of American Craft Magazine. He has works in the collection of LA Metro and The Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe, NM. He is featured in the “Play” episode of Craft In America (PBS) and is the subject of a documentary short directed by Tom Maroney titled Piñatas of Earthly Delights.
