Looking at Women Looking at War – the life and work of Victoria Amelina | Second Home Spitalfields
Feb 12, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
London
When Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, Victoria Amelina was busy writing a novel, taking part in the country's literary scene, and parenting her son. Then she became someone new: a war crimes researcher and the chronicler of extraordinary women like herself who joined the resistance. These heroines include Evgenia, a prominent lawyer turned soldier, Oleksandra, who documented tens of thousands of war crimes and won a Nobel Peace Prize in 2022, and Yulia, a librarian who helped uncover the abduction and murder of a children's book author. Everyone in Ukraine knew that Amelina was documenting the war. She photographed the ruins of schools and cultural centers; she recorded the testimonies of survivors and eyewitnesses to atrocities. And she slowly turned back into a storyteller, writing what would become this book. On the evening of June 27th, 2023, Amelina and three international writers stopped for dinner in the embattled Donetsk region. When a Russian cruise missile hit the restaurant, Amelina suffered grievous head injuries, and lost consciousness. She died on July 1st. She was thirty-seven. She left behind an incredible account of the ravages of war and the cost of resistance. Honest, intimate, and wry, this book will be celebrated as a classic. About the author: Victoria Amelina was killed by a Russian missile in July, 2023. She was an award-winning Ukrainian novelist, essayist, poet, and human rights activist whose prose and poems have been translated into many languages. In 2019/2020 she lived and traveled extensively in the US. She wrote both in Ukrainian and English, and her essays have appeared in Irish Times, Dublin Review of Books, and Eurozine. Our guest speakers on the night: Christina Lamb is Chief Foreign Correspondent for the Sunday Times and a bestselling author. She has reported on conflicts from Afghanistan to Ukraine, always particularly focusing on women, and has won 20 major awards, most recently a Lifetime Achievement Award from Women in Journalism. She has written ten books including Our Bodies Their Battlefield; What War does to Women and co-authoring the global bestseller I Am Malala Charlotte Higgins is chief culture writer of the Guardian. Her latest book, Greek Myths: A New Retelling, is published by Jonathan Cape. Dr Olesya Khromeychuk is a historian and writer. She is the author of The Death of a Soldier Told by His Sister. Khromeychuk has written for The New York Times, The New York Review of Books, The Guardian, Der Spiegel, Prospect and The New Statesman, and has delivered a TED talk on ‘What the World Can Learn From Ukraine's Fight for Democracy’. She has taught the history of East-Central Europe at several British universities and is currently the Director of the Ukrainian Institute London. Sasha Dovzhyk is a Ukrainian writer, editor, and cultural manager. She holds a PhD in English and Сomparative Literature from Birkbeck, and has taught at Birkbeck and UCL SSEES, worked as a special projects curator at the Ukrainian Institute London, and edited three books. Her writing has appeared in the New York Times, Los Angeles Review of Books, Guardian, New Lines, Index of Censorship, CNN, and others. She edits the London Ukrainian Review. Having lived in London for eight years, she has, after Russia's full-scale invasion, moved back to Ukraine where she serves as the director of a new cultural and research institution, INDEX: Institute for Documentation and Exchange. At night, she works on the book of tales of Ukrainian resistance.

TOUGH HIKE 28km Challenge - Surrey 3 Peaks 830M ASCENT | Victoria Station
Apr 12, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
London
Our toughest day hike from London - are you up for the challenge? Taking in the three highest peaks in Surrey - Box hill (224m), Leith Hill (294m) and Holmbury Hill (261m) and being nearly as long as the Yorkshire Three Peaks, they are also known as the Yorkshire cousins. This is a formidable challenge and accessible from London in a day. As well as being a stunning route in the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty it's also a great training hike for anyone doing a big challenge this year like The Yorkshire or National 3 Peaks as well as Kilimanjaro, Everest Base Camp or Mount Toubkal. TOUGHNESS WARNING - this is a tough and very hilly hike and is also long. You need to be an experienced and fit hiker. It is not for beginners or anyone who has only done intermediate hikes.
To be fair to those attending , if you are unable to keep up with the group or finish the hike, you will need to leave the hike get a taxi at your own expense. Our pace will average 4 to 4.3kmph.
At over 800m ascent, it is almost the same ascent as Snowdon - the highest mountain Wales.
If you have any doubts at all then this is not a hike to join. If you are unsure, email us, but anyone who cannot keep up with the group will need to leave the hike and no refund will be due - only sign up if you are happy with this. HIGHLIGHTS • Conquer the 3 Surrey peaks - situation in an “Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty”
• Enjoy breathtaking hiking through the woods and hills of the North Downs
• Hike through England's largest vineyard - Denbies Wine Estate
• See the twisting Box hill roads of the 2012 Olympics cycle race where the cyclists did 9 laps of this spectacular section
• Great training hike for any tough challenges you have coming up HIKE DESCRIPTION As well as being a great challenge, this hike is also stunningly beautiful, taking in much of the Surrey Hills, Surrey is the most heavily wooded county in England and also conveniently very close to London. Hiking for 28 km and taking in some amazing scenery across the three Surrey peaks, our trail will pass through ancient sandy trails and woodlands and offers spectacular views from all three of the hills. Upon reaching Leith Hill we get some of the most far reaching views of any hike we do - being the second highest point in South East England. We will see as far as the South Downs by the sea and on a clear day from the Northern edge of the hill we can see several central London landmark buildings This is a tough hike, but if needed it’s easy to skip the last hill and hence shorten the hike a little if you want (self guided). Due to the length of the hike we do not usually have our usual end of hike pub stop MEETING POINT Victoria station at 8am, leave at 8:20am for the 8:41am train.
